“Great location, extensive buffet, riverside hotel”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

The Shangri-La is what you would expect for a 5 star Asian hotel - comfortable and clean, everything you need, world-class standard.
Individual positives: fantastic riverside location, right next to the sky-train and market, down the street from the Oriental but with the tranquility of being by the water.
I have stayed here many times and it has excellent conference facilities, a comfortable, spacious pool area and a really brilliant gourmet buffet (both breakfast and dinner) - one of the best in the world which I have been to.
Negatives: Everything is as you need, but being a very large hotel it lacks some of the charm of say, the Anantara, but still has more of a relaxed resort feel than the nearby Peninsular or Hilton high-rises. Great for business people, established couples with a bit of cash and even kids as it's big enough to spread out and not stuffy despite being a high standard.
I remember coming here in 1993 and it was drop-dead luxury - it has since been overtaken by other hotels in those stakes but is still a high standard.
A comfortable and stylish old dame.

Wow! Just wow. This hotel is one of the nicest, if not the nicest I have stayed in ever, and I have been all over Asia in excellent hotels. I chose to stay in the exclusive Krungthep Wing which is almost a boutique hotel within a fine hotel. That was an excellent choice for me. In a lot of Asian hotels, even the very fine ones, the sheer number of guests can make it a bit of a crazy scene even in a very nice place. The Krungthep Wing offers the guest a chance for ultra exclusive service in a smaller, quiet refined setting. For me, this was the perfect choice.

The service? Impeccable. The staff learns your name and treats you with kindness and efficiency, offering exquisite service. Among other things, in the Krungthep Wing you are greeted and set up with a butler who is available throughout your stay for whatever you need.

The rooms? Beautiful. Large, lovely to the highest standard with a Thai flare and offering every possible amenity. Comfortable bedding, beautiful bathroom, generous seating even in a non suite room, just everything you might need.

Extras? Many. The rooms in this wing include; a fantastic breakfast, high tea if you care to partake, service by the pool includes coffee, soft drinks, etc. at no charge, a wonderful happy hour with excellent food offerings and unlimited drinks. Internet is free. They offer it all.

Ambience? Just beautiful. The hotel is located along the river offering a never ending view of life on the river in Bangkok. River taxis pass by, hotel boats pass by for guest transportation, etc. The public spaces in this hotel are beautiful and the Krungthep Wing is especially nice. It is literally like a boutique hotel.

I can’t say enough about this hotel and the staff at the Shangri-la Bangkok. I can’t say enough about the Krungthep Wing. This is my first time in Bangkok and I want to come back just to stay here, hang out, and relax. It is wonderful.

Give these folks a chance. They are doing their best to offer you the best of Asian service in Bangkok. It is an oasis in a hectic city. Don’t miss out!

Room Tip: I loved the Krungthep Wing for exclusivity, privacy and service.

We stayed for one night at the Shangri La before heading south to the islands, what a great start. The service, as expected, was perfect and I highly recommend paying a little extra to stay in the Krungthep Wing which includes so much that it is excellent value for money, and guarantees you a river facing room with a private balcony.

I stayed in the Banyan Tree in Bangkok last year and as much as I liked it, the service at the Shangri La was on another level.

If there was one let down, it was the shower - it was disappointing to be merely dribbled on in a hotel of this calibre.

Sort the showers out and it's 100% from me!

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the Krungthep Wing

What an amazing hotel, staff that go out of their way to help, immaculate rooms with balcony overlooking the river and breakfast that included indian, chinese, huge pastry section....the list is endless. We booked the krungthep wing mainly for the balcony,so we could sit outside when our 6 year old went to bed. Also included was complimentary afternoon tea and free cocktails, wine and canapes from 5.30 until 7.30 which was agreat way to start the evening! The skytrain is just around the corner,a great way to get around without the traffic or hop on a boat from the pier next to the hotel. The pools were lovely and both overlooked the river.we received two 800 baht massage vouchers for the spa so paid about £30 for a massage, unfortunately, during mine, the masseuse had her phone switched on which beeped a few times, bit annoying! Our daughter was spoilt and on arrival received a big chocolate elephant from the hotels chocolate shop and also a jar of cookies each evening. The fluffy robes and L'occitane products in the bathroom made us feel pampered and cocktails delivered to the room at sundown..lovely!

Room Tip: Spend a bit extra and get a balcony room if you have younger children that need to go to bed earlier...

I and my wife stayed two nights on Shangri-La. And let there be no doubt. This is a VERY nice hotel. Great service, great rooms with a splendid view and excellent restaurants. Especially the buffet-dinner is out of this world! The club facilities are also very good - nice food and drinks!

The hotel is HUGE and is located right next to the river and the Skytrain - very convenient. And the hotel boat that brings you on a great dinner cruise is a must. Really fantastic - we loved it, just like a year ago.

Why then "only" give the hotel 4 stars? Because there are other hotels in Bangkok which are even better! For instance Peninsula and - especially - the neighbour hotel: The Oriental. Shangri-La lacks the final touch of class and intimacy. Maybe it is too big a hotel to offer just that little extra that could bring it into the top 3...

This however does not mean that Shangri-La is a bad choice. No way. I will really consider coming back - if I do not wish to spend a few extra USD on the neighbour ...
