I am so disapointed to write this review because Shangri la was my favorite spot in bangkok. I have been there 4 times during the last 14 months. I must say this time the service was awful. Is it because of a new general manager ( french?) or financial cut?
As I Told we are regular and good customers, member of the fidelity program. At arrival not even a good afternoon mister K..., nice to welcome you again, hope you had a good trip. At time of computer, where five stars hotel all over the world give personalization. Nothing.
No special attention in the room. Housekeeping limits, before you had your prepare for evening : change towels, close curtains, not anymore. The room is nice, the swimming pool and the restaurants ande the food also but no service. You wait for hours during breakfast, diner or at the bar before someone takes care of you, i had to give the order my self at the bar, ask four times the waiter for breakfast, undo the table my self after the appetizers for diner. Waiter are not smiling anymore, you feel like annoying them.
I ask to see the front desk manager to complain, he was suppose to call me in my room within 30 minutes, i never received his phone call.
When you are supposed tone a five star luxury resort, one of the best of Bangkok all tis is unacceptable. I think it is better to avoid this place for several time if it does not change.

Room tip: Choose high level with balcony river view

We spent a week in this hotel. Fantastic location on the river, with minutesw walk to the Skytrain.

We had a suite and the room was truely amazing, all staff that we met bent over backwards, would not consider staying anywhere else in Bangkok.

First timestay at Shangri la - great location, on bank of river, and round the corner from sky train. We had pre booked Krungthep wing, and thouroughly enjoyed the tranquillity and ambience of this wing. Staff were very attentive, even throughout the complimentary evening cocktails and breakfast was a very civilised experience. Our room was very spacious and bathroom was huge - it was great being able to go out onto the balcony and watch the activity on the river, athough there was a bit of a drone from traffic on nearby bridge. We went over to the main lounge in Shangri La - very impressive with awesome view of the river. There was an excellant band playing and the lead singer was great - they even played a couple of tunes that we could swing dance to. Although we did not use the pools, it was a lovely setting. Would recommend Krungthep wing for couples/business and main wing for families

Room tip: ask for high floor away from bridge/traffice noise

Being a big fan of the Shangri La brand two of us made a point of crossing town to enjoy a New Years Eve lunch at NEXT2 restaurant.

We arrived about 2.15pm afer the main lunch service and were seated outside on the terrace and it appeared that there had been several larger groups dining as staff were busy concentrating clearing up the aftermath. Unfortunately they were so busy clearing up with a weary attitude that service was really poor. No smiles, we had to wave several times for service and at the end I ordered a cappucino and was served a black coffee. The food was good and would have tasted that bit better if the service had been better. Instead it became
just an overpriced average lunch and not worth the schlep across town.

I know it was new years eve, staff probably weary of working when others are enjoying themselves but it really showed. Dissapointing. i was planning to stay here at the end of the month for my 40th but rebooked at the Intercontinenal instead based on this experience.

Please accept our sincere apologies and we will ensure your future stays with us with certainly be a more pleasant experience. We (family of four) stayed in the new Krungthep Wing for four nights this December 2011 just before Christmas. We weren't expecting much as it was a cheap deal stop over booked through a large UK travel agent in order to get cheap flights to New Zealand.
It was a perfectly good hotel but without the charm (or the room price!) of a truly magnificent far-eastern hotel but it is well located on the river front and next to the sky train. We had two interconnecting river-view rooms which were spacious enough and well appointed with free internet connection. Each room had its own balcony but you wouldn't want to actually sit on it as the noise from the very busy road bridge adjacent to the hotel was too great (but you can't hear it when the doors are shut and you are in the room).
The hotel staff (like the Thai people) were polite and very helpful. The hotel has an excellent Thai restaurant and the food was delicious but expensive (for Thailand). The pool area is nice but small and the pool water was cold.
we booked a great local guide through the hotel Concierge who took us in an air conditioned van (with driver) to the main sights (Royal Palace, Jim Thompson House etc). If you have more that a couple of days definitely make the effort to go to the floating market (about and hour and half out of Bangkok). Although full of tourists the kids had a ball and it is really fun to get your own boat and go shopping along the canals. Also get a massage from one of the many local massage places around the hotel (don't bother with expensive spa), great reflexology and so unbelievably cheap - we all had one every day (including the kids)!
We will definitely be returning to Bangkok as we loved the mix of very modern city and classic Thai culture.
