We booked a riverview balcony room and were wowed because we had huge picture windows with views down the river from the bathroom and bedroom and views across the river from the balcony which opened from the bedroom. It probably helped that the hotel probably wasn't that full, we didn't see any other person on our (ninth) floor in our coming and goings in four days.
Breakfast by the river was very good, Angelinis (the Italian restaurant) and room service also of the quality you would expect. We had hoped to do the Attathuya river trip on the Shangrila boat but because of recent floods it wasn't running. The hotel did organise a longtail boat to pick us up from and drop us back at the hotel dock to do a klong (canal) trip. Lots of local shopping nearby and a supermarket under the nearby Robinsons. Taxi to Central/ Siam Paragon shopping area was cheap but the free entertainment on the river (ferries, hotel boats, barges) was the highlight. Highly recommended!

Room tip: Room 918 was fantastic but I guess an '18' room on any floor would have the same configuration.

I moved into this hotel after staying at the courtyard for the weekend. This is a massive hotel right by the river. The bar just the by the river is amazing and you can spend hours out there.
The hotel though is a lil far from the city centre, but the cheap taxis doesnt make that an issue.
The rooms are nice and spacious and suitable for couples and families.

Having stayed at the Shang more times than i can remember this is one of my favourite hotels in the world! We always stay in the Krungthep Wing (well except once) and i love the suites which we stay in the majority of time. the wing is a little old but it still has a feel about it that brings me back time and time again
The whole experience from the minute you enter the hotel is one of pleasure.
From check in to receiving your luggage the staff always seem to make you feel happy no matter how tired you are.
The breakfast in the lounge is great as is high tea and the private pool for the wings guests is always a winner, Mai the pool guy is just amazing and we have been coming many years and as soon as he sees us he always greets us with the most warm reception.
The restaurants are not my favourite, well other than Angelini's as this has been in my top 10 restaurants ever.
as this hotel is on the river it can be a little noisy but Bangkok is a bustly city with lots of noise and it has a buzz about it, you always feel special when your arrive!

Room tip: Go for a suite, these have a huge bedroom with a balcony and an amazing bathroom with shower and bath and great facilities, there is also 2 balconies, one off the bedroom and one off the living room, the living area has tv sofa and 2 chairs along with an office area and separate bathroom and a great mini bar!

We went to the Shangri La after friends recommended it to us. We were not disappointed. We had a lovely river view room and although the river is brown in colour (which is a bit disappointing) it was still nice to look out and see all the boats going up and down. It was lovely to come back to 'an oasis of calm' after being out in Bangkok. We only stayed 2 nights, but would do so again if we were to visit Bangkok - we felt it was worth the money.

Room tip: Book a room with a river view

Just returned from a few days at the Shangri La, beautiful property in excellent location. Krungthep wing is wonderful & service just perfect ! If you upgrade to the Krungthep wing, you receive afternoon tea, complimentary cocktails/beer & wine along with canapes from 5pm until 7.30pm, complimentary soft drinks in mini-bar as well as by the pool & breakfast. In the evening from 5pm until 7.30 you are given a menu to choose drinks with good choice of cocktails & wine along with Thai beers plus hot & cold snacks. Value for money is excellent. Also recommend pre-booking your airport transfers with the hotel, works out to around £60 each way. We hired a private long-tailed boat for a trip down the river to see the palaces - great fun. Italian restaurant at hotel very good but pricey. If you are looking for ultra modern, funky hotels then consider Banyan Tree or Metropolitan but if you are after outstanding service, large rooms & wonderful pool areas then go for the Shangri La as it's hard to beat in Bangkok !
