anyone who says they don't love the Menam Riverside is out of their mind. It's got a large lobby area and elegant feel to the place. The pool is gorgeous. The beds are wonderful and the views beautiful. The price is amazing for what you get. The breakfast buffet is superb (thought it came free but that was our mistake)...we'll be staying there for 3 more days at the end of our SE Asia trip...it's worth taking the taxi from there to the airport because the prices of the airport hotels that are comparable are way too high. They even have nightly entertainment which is sweet and typical Asian..girl singing covers of American songs but she did a great job. When we return we'll do the boat tours and sightseeing. The neighborhood is is typical Bangkok..not in the coolest shopping area but still found some good stuff around.

Stayed at the Menam Riverside Hotel for 3 nights in mid-February 06. Fortunately there were no signs of any ongoing renovations and the room and river views were beautiful. However, the hotel isn't especially central & you don't get a free transfer from the airport (or breakfast included) unless you book via their website which is considerably more expensive than using other sites. There aren't many places nearby to buy food if ever you don't want to eat at the hotel outlets though fortunately there is a nearby supermarket (1-2 mins walk away).

A good thing about the hotel is that there is a boat around every 20 mins which takes you to the nearest skytrain & boat stop for free (& is a picturesque ride in itself). The staff are friendly and it was lovely sitting by the pool in the evening listening to the music from the show in the poolside restarant. The only downside regarding the pool is it isn't covered or heated so when it rained the 1st couple of days we were there, it was cold & exposed.

All in all, the hotel is good value at around £30 per night for a deluxe room which was attractive, clean & comfortable with big beds & every amenity you could need.

My husband and I stayed at the Menam Riverside Hotel in Bangkok twice in Feb/March '06 at the suggestion of a family member from NYC who stayed there recently. It was by far the most luxurious hotel we stayed at during our 2 weeks in Thailand. The hotel is still working on renovation but the work now seems to be confined to one floor at a time and we didn't hear any noise. At one point some repairs were going on in the lobby by the front desk but one of the staff instructed the workers to pause when the lobby was full of guests. We stayed on the 14th and 16th floors, deluxe rooms, with wonderful views of the pool and river. We had a small fridge/mini bar, in-room safe, coffee maker (instant unfortunately), hair dryer, robes and slippers, extra pillows, free toiletries, 2 free bottles of water per day, fresh flowers on our pillows, coupons for complimentary punch in the lobby, a handy map of the area and free water taxi shuttles. Also included in the room price is a lavish free American breakfast buffet which was very tasty, but as another writer commented, it got old having the same menu every day. We also had lunch twice at the same restaurant, great noodles dishes, and we also had a good, if pricey lunch upstairs at the Ahyat Abalone Forum Restaurant which is highly regarded among serious Chinese food enthusiasts.

There is a grocery store nextdoor called Tops that was fun to visit and had any other necessities we needed. A word to white wine drinkers like me: it's hard to find! They had one house white at the hotel that was horrible. Tops had a few decent chardonnays from Chile and Australia for about 600 bhat but they don't sell cork screws so bring your own.

Compared to the Oriental and Marriott, the 2 other riverside hotels we considered, the price was amazingly low. I got an internet rate of $90US per night for the first visit and we got an even lower price of $55/night for the second visit for a similar room through a travel agent we were referred to by the same family member. He also completely organized the second half of our trip to Chiang Mai and Phuket, he was fantastic. As this site does not allow commercial websites, I can say his name is Victor Ong and his tiny office, Riverside Information, is at the end of the 2 rows of small businesses that flank the hotel, on the right side as you look out from the hotel lobby. His English is pretty good and he has many photo albums to show you of his life in the U.S. 18 years ago.

One night we took the elevator to the 17th floor in hopes of getting a good photo of the river and ended up on a floor that opened out on to the top of the hotel. We probably weren’t supposed to be there, but the view at night of the entire city from the deserted roof of the hotel was a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Pool area was idyllic. The staff was mostly very friendly and tried to be helpful despite their very limited English. We were always immediately identified as Americans, and even so, treated very courteously! My long-haired husband was consistently mistaken for some sort of rock star which was very humorous. We hope to return to Thailand next year and the Menam will definitely be our first stop in Bangkok.

I'm a woman who stayed there on my own for three nights in February and have nothing but great things to say about the hotel. I read the reviews and noted the "dingy" corridors. While that may be true, I wasn't paying anything close to the cost of the other expensive river hotels, and had a lovely room, beautiful pool and lobby area, and felt completely safe. The hotel's boat was great, very convenient, and you're a very short walk to the public water taxi if you want to go to other stops. I think the hotel is great, and so did the other people I met there. I didn't find the poolside food that overpriced, either. Try booking through Asiarooms(-) or latestays(-)

ps -- re: only one room key. Most hotels allow you to drop the key at reception and pick it up when you come in, allowing either person to get it when they want.

First the advantages: The place is spotless. No cleaner hotel could be found. The hotel ferry that goes to the Skytrain is now operating every 30 minutes, and that's a distinct advantage. The breakfast buffet is fine, if always the same.
The disadvantages: Very few staff speak acceptable English. They try hard enough, but the fact is that when in converation about needing something, one gets confused looks from the staff who simply do not understand. It's very frustrating. The second pronblem is more serious - a question of safety. Rooms are opened by the use of key cards & the hotel absolutely refuses to let guests have 2 keys for a room even if they are friends sharing, not married. That leads to many occasions when one person needs to be allowed in the room by hotel staff. All you have to do is say that you're "whoever" and they let you in the room. No identification is required. That's a serious safety problem and for that reason alone I would not return. How much more would it cost them to make out a second key card? This is the only hotel in the world that refused the request.

Don't really have anything bad to say about the hotel. We paid less than £30 per night for bed and breakfast in a delux river and pool view room.

The Lobby is lovely and the pool and sun terrace are nice - the hotel provide beach towels for the sunloungers.

The information about the river shuttle is wrong in the rooms. The shuttle boat runs every half an hour and takes you to the Sky Train station. We found this convenient.

Although the hotel is a bit out of the way, taxis are very cheap and plentiful therefore it was not really a problem.

Would definetely stay in this hotel again, the buffet breakfast was lovely and for less than £30 a night all in we found it extremely good value for money.

Good Points

1.Fantastic pool / river view - loved watching the river hustle and bustle!
2. Very large rooms, very light and pretty clean too with lovely bathroom. (booked deluxe on 10th floor)
3. Great lobby
4. Local streets very thai, loads of interesting stuff going on, exciting atmosphere and great people watching spot!
5. not too far from skytrain by boat (5 - 10 mins), nice to expereince the river life of bangkok!

Bad points

1. the only hotel in the entire world where i have ever been charged for using the tea and coffee sachets provided!! they don't even get filled up the next day, you have to ask for more then get charged for a full pack!!!.. Also the so called complimentry water didn't exist - we got charged!
2. the shuttle boat is complete rubbish, all the other hotel boats turned up every few minites we waited over half an hour every time getting attacked by msoquitoes by the water!!. the local one round the corner is much much better, and full of locals too!
3. the food by the pool was a complete rip off and not great either, the beer was 4 times more expensive than anywhere else..i know this is usually the case at hotels but the standard was bad also.
4. Huge hotel and long corriders and general decor needs updated, a bit dingy and depressing!!!

Overall i was pretty happy with the room (booked a deluxe) was good value but probably wouldn't stay here again because of the above points..staff on desk were quite rude too...
