Stayed in the Banyan Tree with 9 other people (including my girlfriend) for 1 night. We also stayed in the Conrad and Metropolitan hotel too (See my other reviews).

If you want something slightly cheaper, but more funky in a chic minimalist style (with very "cool" bathrooms), then the Met is for you. For more luxurious experience and nicer rooms, the Banyan Tree is for you (especially if you are a fan of spas / massages). The Conrad is probably more of a business style hotel, the rooms are smaller, but still very modern with a cool glass enclosed bathroom and a great location for sightseeing.

Back to the Banyan Tree...

Great things:
1) Rooms (we had standard ones) were very large with a separate lounge / living area. Rooms are carpeted (as opposed to wood at the Met) so feels more luxurious, though maybe less chic. TV was a bit small though and not in a great location.
2) Service - we were greeted with floral leis and checked-in by the lounge area and served with drinks. Staff was very friendly throughout.
3) Vertigo bar - definitely worth checking out, though i heard the food was not that great. Go for a couple of drinks. The views are worth it.
4) Spa / massage - i didn't use it, but my friends said it was great

Bad things:
1) Location - set quite a bit back off the main street and a decent 10-15 min to the train station...so you are compelled to catch a cab everywhere which is fine except for the famed Bangkok traffic
2) I didn't notice this, but one of my friends said the beds were very hard
3) Bathrooms were not as spectacular as some other hotels (e.g. the Met)
4) Pool was not that great - pretty small and wasn't that clean

Great spacious room, with separate living and working area (for deluxe room) - bathroom is large, with spa amenities. I love their GREEN initiatives (no bottles for shampoo, etc.. all is refillable).

Furniture is a bit old, they have 2 TVs but TV is still the tube kind from the 90s... (come on Banyan Tree, we deserve a Flat Screen TV with your rate)

Food is excellent! Thai food is the best, order their Beef Fried Rice... it's the best, and don't forget Mango Sticky rice.

Hotel is in the business are, near embassy and office. If you're a tourist, the subway station is only 7 minutes walking, and the Suan Lum night bazaar (a favorite for tourist, less hot than the weekend market) is only a 10 minute walk, next to the subway.

In Bangkok the Subway and Sky train can pretty much take you anywhere, and taxi doesnt cost that much, but traffic can be a pain.

Airport is about 600 bath away... and if you need anything the concierge is pretty helpful. overall I had a good stay.

My first time here...let's be clear about the 5 star thing. I would call the Banyan Tree a 5 star hotel but equally I would label the Mandarin Oriental and Penninsula as 6 star hotels if you get my meaning?
Positives: their limo service is high quality, their restaurants are possibly some of the best in town, their service and attention to detail was very high quality. Their Spa is excellent too.
Negatives: the rooms are quite small, the furnishings of medium quality, the bathroom was good but not outstanding (they have these annoying soap, shampoo refillable containers which are annoyingly difficult to use when wet and easily broken). On the 49th floor you had a good wait for hot water first thing in the morning and the shower floor was quite slippery. I expected the internet to be free. The pool area is quite small.

Their buffet restaurant on the lower level served high quality produce. This area was also used for breakfast and I couldn't help but get the impression that it became, at times, chaotic and risked overspilling due to a lack of space/seats.

For the price (and it was significantly cheaper than the Oriental and Penninsula) I thought it provided good value for money.

One tip I would give any foreigner visiting any Thai hotel is to "speak in english slowly and clearly". The Thai people do well to learn english and I think the least we can do is speak it clearly and check they've understood what you've said without getting annoyed. It will not only help them but also help you to get what you want the first time round and correctly. Don't forget that english sounds very different when spoken by people from different countries, I'm english and have problems understanding other europeans when they speak.
TIP:
If you don't want to spend too much money on eating in the top hotel restaurants or want a change, we found two good options: Beruit Restaurant (great middle eastern food) and Spanish on 4 (Tapas) both in the Pat Pong district.

When you are first greated at the entrance with flowers and concierge, you are whisked away into a land of make believe. In the middle of the hustle and bustle of Bangkok you have a place that seems to not fit there...

The hotel itself is elegant and traditional thai whilst also being contemporary. We only stayed one night (money and time permitting) but i can say happily it is one of the most unforgettable nights i have ever had!!! We stayed in the Banyan Club Suite on the 50th floor, the views were stunning across the city! The 3 room bedroom was elegant along with a traditional fixtures and fittings.

We went to the 21st floor to spend the afternoon in the Spa where you were pampered for 2 hours and treated like royalty! Nothing was too much! After that we got ready and went to the 64th floor to dine at vertigo on top of the Banyan Tree. The views were out of this world.... fantastic! The food and wine was amazing too, but the views are what sold the restaurant!

Overall the hotel is 5* at its best. Without doubt one of the most expensive hotels, and at times you can feel if your paying £700 a night for hotel, spa and diner that it might seem alot of money... but trust me... its worth every penny and it is an event you will never ever forget, you have to visit this place once in your lifetime!!!!

We managed to get a Club Room at a very decent rate from Asiarooms.com and loved every moment of our stay at the Banyan Tree. It is worth everyone of its five stars and every penny we paid and more.
Our room was massive and modernly furnished. Our deal included access to the club lounge including drinks and canapes, a free massage, a romantic bath scrub and some laundry.
The standard of the room was among the highest I have ever seen.
Our check out time was 3pm the following day but for no extra charge they allowed us to keep the room until 6pm allowing us to enjoy a second full day of the facilities. Throughout our stay the staff couldn't do enough to help us.
We dined at the hotel's roof top restaurant. The view alone is worth the price of the meal.
We would certainly stay at another Banyan Tree if we can get a deal like this one in the future. It was a perfect end to our trip to Thailand.

Sometimes its nice to splash out. When you do you like it to be worthwhile, and when I stayed at the Banyan Tree in Bangkok I was not disappointed with the decision. Come in, take a load off in this beautifully designed relaxing property. The staff are attentive and comfortingly pleasant, the rooms are intersting and beautifully designed and faultless in their cleanliness and quality. The rooftop bar is a glamourous outpost where you can feel you really are in the right spot.
