We recently arrived back in the UK after our wonderful multi-destination holiday in Thailand to celebrate our Anniversary, (my husband works abroad, therefore he sadly misses several important celebratory dates throughout the year).
Our first stop off for three nights was Bangkok. After much deliberation regarding Hotels, we decided to book the Banyan Tree Hotel, a Club King room.
Prior to our travels, I had personally emailed the Banyan Tree regarding my own dietary requirements, room requirements etc. The correspondence I received from Akkachai Charumporn (Assistant Manager), was always prompt and it became apparent that the communication between the Hotels various departments is excellent. In turn, I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email from the Head Chef, Jai. Not only did this offer us reassurance that our food requests were being met, but also the pride and professionalism he clearly holds as the Banyan Trees Head Chef.
On arrival at the Banyan Tree, we were pleasantly greeted with handmade bracelets made of fresh jasmine flowers and roses… absolutely beautiful and smelling divine! Our bags were taken care of immediately and we were personally escorted to the Hotels Club Lounge floor. Upon entering the Club Lounge, we again were promptly greeted by Ying (Front Office Manager), Wat and Jack (Customer Services team). We were seated and given a herbal welcome drink and warm, freshly scented flannels to clean our hands etc. Jack then reiterated the Club Lounge benefits etc., with us. Our package included breakfasts at the Club Lounge, drinks and nibbles early evening. Chef Jai also made his personal introduction, offering us further reassurance that our dietary requirements would be taken care of by him personally. He also offered us a kind gesture of making his own recipe gluten free Anniversary cake, with compliments. It was only our first day and already my husband and I felt very special.
Our Club King room was absolutely fantastic! Very spacious, the King bed was very comfortable, the bath tub was huge with a superb view of Bangkok, drinking water was replenished often and each day we were left a complimentary small gift, such as; satin elephant key rings, bamboo cup rests & handmade, luxury bookmarks. We were left little food treats everyday too, such as; sesame and caramel slices, mini spring rolls, etc.
The Hotel uses a different Aromatherapy fragrance for each day of the week; hence in our Club King room, the complimentary incense sticks and oil burner coincided with the same fragrance. I love Aromatherapy, and it’s the first time I have stayed in a Hotel room where incense sticks, aroma oils and candles are part of the room features! The best thing to have when sitting in a gigantic bath filled with aroma bubbles!
The room also included ‘his & her’ wash bags which were filled daily with the general amenities such as; toothpaste, cotton buds, etc. Fresh Frangipani flowers were delicately scattered throughout the room daily, adding a lovely touch to the room’s wonderful décor and ambience. The room cleaning was always thorough and regular. The room bathrobes and slippers were beautiful patterned and made from cotton, therefore very comfortable and cool to wear. The air conditioning was also excellent. The mini bar offered a good variety of nibbles and refreshments, and I felt secure with the additional lock on the room door. It was great to have a seated area with couch and a computer desk. Clearly, almost every detail had been considered with the design of this room. We could not fault it at all, however, I felt that the subdued lighting made it difficult for me when I wanted to do my hair and make-up. As a suggestion, I feel that maybe they could attach studio lights around the dressing table area (situated in the bathroom), as this seemed to be the ideal spot for doing hair and makeup. Maybe a plug socket here too for the hairdryer.
Our first nights meal was at the Hotels top floor, Vertigo Restaurant. Wow!….what stunning views! We were clearly given one of the best tables, (however, most of the tables did seem to offer a great view), and we were immediately greeted upon arrival by our personal waiter, Sutas and the restaurant Manager, Jacky. The menu features a wonderful choice of food, however we personally thought that alcohol was priced far too high. Actually higher than some top restaurants in London. However, as this was a celebratory holiday, we didn’t let this ruin our time. We ordered a glass of Pink Champagne, which was roughly £60 a glass, and a bottle of Sancerre, which was just over £100. Throughout our meal we were presented with complimentary, small palate refreshers. Surprisingly, we were presented with a complimentary glass of white Champagne and fresh oysters with caviar, (we were virgins to oysters, but they were absolutely delicious!), plus a mini herbal sorbet. Fresh gluten free bread was made for me whilst my husband nibbled on fresh breads of various varieties.
Our starters of prawns and scallops were absolutely delicious. For our main course we had the Wagu steak cooked medium. Wow! …. Melted in the mouth, cooked to perfection. The portion size was very large and without a doubt, in league with the Akobi steak we had in Texas. Definitely one of the best steaks we had ever eaten. We were also given a selection of four steak sauces to try with our meal. Indeed they were all delicious. Throughout our meal, the service by Sutas was first class. Our glasses were never empty, whether that’s water or wine, his professionalism was world class standard.
For dessert, (we were feeling very full by this stage!), we were firstly presented with a large ‘steaming affect,’ complimentary, alcoholic sorbet with sparklers. I was also given a fresh red rose. It all looked so beautiful! They then presented us with Chef Jai’s gluten free, chocolate Anniversary cake! The Manager proceeded to take a photo of us, (featuring the beautiful well lit scenery of Bangkok’s Skyscrapers behind us), and presented us with our picture in a frame, all complimentary of the Vertigo Restaurant team. Wow! We felt so taken care of and regardless of the steep alcohol prices, we would give this restaurant 10/10. Great service, great ambience, great views, great food, great attention to detail and one of the best, most romantic evenings we have had in a while.
The daily breakfasts in the Lounge were very good. Not only was it nice to have your breakfast in peace, the window views are great. The food choices catered for a variety of nationalities and the food was hot. Eggs were made to order, as was tea and coffee. The waiting on staff were always very helpful and friendly.
The evening Club Lounge nibbles and drinks were also great and definitely worth taking advantage of. Personally we are not big drinkers and as I have mentioned, we did find alcohol expensive. Being a Club Lounge member gives you free alcoholic drinks early evening, within the given time limits.
The Hotel service for excursions is excellent. We opted private tours, which meant that we could book last minute if we wished. You do pay more, but this was our preference. Overall, the excursions were quite expensive, but in league with most other excursion companies.
The upper floor Hotel shop is very nice, offering a variety of souvenirs and unusual Thai gifts. Hotel members do get a discount; therefore it’s worth taking a peak. They also sell their incense stick and oils here, as well as various black teas & herbal teas etc.
We did not use the gym or sauna, but the top floor outside pool is very lovely. All towels and loungers are provided, and you get a great view of the Bangkok city. The pool has small waterfall features, which give it a lovely Oriental feel. We found sunbathing very relaxing here.
On our third and final night we had our meal at the Hotels Saffron Restaurant. On arrival the Manageress, Kwan, instantly greeted us. The food was reasonably priced, but again, the alcohol was steep. We were given little palate refreshers throughout our meal and small tasters such as mini spring rolls. Each dish I ordered was catered especially, as to exclude the gluten. It was very nice for the Chef to come out and speak to me personally. She explained her dishes and her choice of alternative ingredients that she had used. She clearly held great pride in her food and pleasing customers. We were very impressed!
Kwan served us throughout the night. It was unusual for us to have the Manager serving us, but she was an absolute perfectionist in every way. The other staff members were also very polite and gave a helping hand when or if needed. Each food dish we ordered was absolutely superb. We received a ‘steaming’ sorbet drink at the end of our meal and Kwan took a photo of us, presenting it to us in a frame. Throughout the evening we wanted for nothing, the service was great, the ambience was perfect, the portion sizes were very ample, great presentation and it truly was a superb end to our three-night stay. We just did not want to leave this Hotel.
In the morning our bags were immediately taken care of. The General Manager, Kai (Nopparat Aumpa), introduced herself to us in the Lounge asking us if we had been happy with our stay. It was great to see that the Hotel holds such providence in how customers feel. Of course, we had no negatives, as our stay here was fantastic! I actually felt quite tearful on leaving!
Without a doubt, I highly recommend the Banyan Tree Hotel. We would definitely stay here again. I also recommend that you opt for the Club benefits.
On behalf of my husband and I, we offer our upmost & sincere thanks to all the Staff that made our stay here so memorable and perfect! Thank you! :-)
