With the tastebud tempting write-up in one of the leading guidebooks, we went to The Sukhothai for their legendary Sunday Brunch. I'd like to clarify the facts from the guidebook, brunch is now 2200 Baht per person and no longer includes any alcohol with a glass of wine/champagne at 360 Baht +.
The Colonnage puts on an attractive spread of a nice quality and wonderful variety. Pros: Live stations with freshly prepared custom dishes of sushi, waygu beef, pastas and much more. There were probably 20 types of highly regarded cheeses, wonderful bread choices and Asian specialities too. The seafood assortment and dessert room earn the highest accolades.
Cons: Very limited vegetables and salads. I definitely do not recommend it for a vegetarian, and a vegan may not find anything to eat. The taste was very normal, nothing special. The biggest negative was the price-- 2 brunches with 2 glasses of wine = $200 US dollars.
Reservations are necessary, they were fully booked yesterday. Although the service staff was attentive and the live jazz ensemble added nicely to the lovely setting, the bottom line is... brunch was just not worth the price.

We stayed at the Sukhothai for two nights prior to starting a touring holiday in Cambodia and Laos and thoroughly enjoyed our stay - with one reservation - the noise (no other word for it!) of the air-con in our room at night. We complained several times and were assured, after the first night, that it had been fixed, but it hadn't - two sleepless nights after a long tiring flight from Europe is no fun. Apart from that we enjoyed our stay - the spa is great - the pool lovely to lounge beside in the early evening, if a little noisy being in the commercial area. Breakfasts and the Italian restaurant are excellent - the Thai restaurant not as good as we had hoped. The hotel is spacious and charming - our room was beautiful, the bed very comfortable - the bathroom simply excellent. Generally a great stay - we just wish the air con problem had been sorted out as promised.

First,a disappointing breakfast: FRESH orange juice and a decent variety of bread and "viennoiseries"-of GOOD quality...the Danish pastries and croissant tasted as if they were stale-should be a minimum for a hotel of this standard. They should try to cater for all tastes and see what is served in terms of variety BUT ALSO QUALITY in other upscale hotels of South East Asia.

Then, we were utterly shocked by the colour of their (once!) white carpet on the third floor. The area around the lifts is particularly stained and looks dirty. (See photos)
It is totally unacceptable and shocking for a hotel like the Sukhothai.

Service, on the whole, is good but highly perfectible. Cannot be compared to that of the DataÏ
in Langkawi for instance, another Leading Hotel, and even to that of a few chain hotels where i stayed either in Bangkok, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur: nobody to open the front door on several occasions, the maid ringing at our door on Sunday morning to make the room at about 9am though we had planned to check out at 12,and we had to carry our luggage ourselves when we checked out....

The morning before we left we noticed that part of the area around the pool had not been swept and there were dead leaves both in and around the pool.

Then, one of my friends inadvertently left a leather jacket in the suite the day we left. I contacted the reception asking them to keep the jacket for a few days, my friend had planned to drop by to fetch it the evening before we left Bangkok.. I received an email from their lost and found service, kindly inviting me to mention an address in Bangkok where the jacket could be delivered, which was nice of them we thought. I gave an address and then received another mail asking me how i would like to pay for the 200 baths(!!!) required for the delivery...No comment!!!

We had a nice / average stay, definitely NOT a memorable one. There is a clear discrepancy between the raving reviews and what you will find! The Sukhothai did not really come up to our -maybe too high!-expectations.
When you pay 800 euros for two nights, i think it's normal to be demanding.

This was our second visit here, the last time being in november 2009. I won't repeat everything that other posters have said, except to say, the Sukhothai is still amazing and that if you can afford it, STAY HERE!

Stayed here for 5 nights using the Amex FHR programme (includes breakfast and room upgrade). Overall this is a very good hotel and one I really enjoyed staying in.

Likes
- High Quality room that's a good size. No obvious signs of wear and tear
- Excellent breakfast buffet. Not the largest range but sufficient and good quality. Loved the fresh fruit juice bar
- Good pool area with complimentary bottles of water and iced water spray. Has sun until mid afternoon.
- Friendly and knowledgeable staff especially in the breakfast restaurant.
- Good sized bathroom amenities (Sukhothai branded)
- Internet was complimentary

Dislikes
- A little out of the way but not to remote. Used to be a night market nearby but this has now closed.

We stayed at this hotel 3 days from we came until we left , we were received good treatment from the staff. The staff was so professional and helpful, and friendly. she showed us to our lovely room, with a stunning bathroom. We were very happy to stay in a beautiful room with modern facilities. The price was not more expensive than the other hotel in the city. We will come back this hotel next time.
