“Superb Boutique Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2013

We were recently guests at The Sukhothai. Naturally we appreciated the design of The Sukhothai - it is a truly gorgeous property! The design of the accommodation rooms and the public areas is totally superb. The accommodation room bathrooms are quite simply extraordinary – every detail has been considered and resolved. The service we received from the hotel staff was also truly outstanding.

The service and food at Celadon, the hotel’s Thai restaurant, were both of the highest quality. Our waiter even remembered what German wine we had ordered the evening before. We also very much enjoyed dining at La Scala. Overall The Sukhothai is a superb boutique hotel.

We stayed at the hotel for 3 days, and we have nothing than superlatives to mention! Working in the hospitality industry we know how hard it can be to satisfy all the guests' needs, but here they succeed on all fronts. Ask for an upgrade on checking in, the supplement is worth it. Already at check-in they make you feel welcome, right up to the reception manager walking us up to the room to see if we were happy with the room. We stayed in an executive suite; super comfortable bed, the most fantastic bathroom and all the amenities you can wish for. The breakfast is a delight, not in the least because of the restaurant manager and her staff. Nothing seems to much for them. The pool is an oase of calm with very good service. Celadon has classical, refined Thai food on offer, at reasonable prices for a hotel of this standing. Very helpful advice and good restaurant referals from the concierge. In short: a superb hotel.

Tip: In the evening, go to the rooftop bar of the Banyian Tree hotel next door; magnificient views over Bangkok.

Fabulously comfortable rooms with the best bed ever. Food is terrible in the Thai restaurant which they claim to be 'the best in Bangkok'. They really should not be allowed to make this statement. Other guests were also complaining. The restaurant Manager (if that's what you can call him) is dire. Extremely unprofessional and unkempt. The service by the pool is dreadful. However, the service in the Zuk bar was excellent as was the sushi. The spa was great as you would expect in Thailand. Do not book any tours via the hotel though, overpriced and lacking in expertise. The hotel does seem to attract the gay community.

Truly wonderful hotel.

Stayed for 2 nights as part of our Thai holiday. We stayed in a superior room which was spacious and very well designed with a great bathroom. You are supplied with bath robes, slippers, fresh fruit, truffles and a very good coffee machine.

The hotel is calm and peaceful and is lovely to return too after a fanatic day sightseeing etc in busy Bangkok.

The gym is also excellent and the pool area is very nice.

As mention by others reviews the breakfast is the best around with a great selection of Western and Asian food.

The staff are all friendly and very helfpful.

Its a 10/15 minute easy minute walk to Sala Daeng BTS

I would highly recommended the Sukhothai.

PS I think Kimberly S must have been staying a a different hotel !!

Room Tip: A superior room in the new wing.

We only stayed for 2 nights but wish we could have stayed for longer. The hotel is stunning and so well maintained you wouldn't know its not brand new. We had a superior room which was very generous in size, with lovely mirrored bathroom containing fluffy white towels, robes and gorgeous toiletries. We had a lovely coffee making machine and truffles with fruit on arrival. Also had the best sleep in the large comfortable bed. The hustle and bustle of Bangkok is left behind at the hotel's entrance and you enter a world of peace and tranquility.

We didn't have time to eat in Celadon, but the breakfast was definitely one of the best we've had in SE Asia - we'd read previous reviews on Tripadvisor and based our choice on the prospect of a good breakfast - we weren't disappointed. There was everything from tropical fruits, pastries, eggs cooked how you want, Japanese style breakfasts, cheese, gravadlax, cereals, juices and so on. Not only was there a huge range of choice, it was absolutely delicious as well, and the chefs cooked the eggs perfectly.

We were concerned about the distance of the hotel from the sky train, but needn't have worried. You literally come out of the front entrance, turn left and cross the main road at the pedestrian crossing, which leads down a street on the opposite side which is full of cafes and shops - it is barely a 10 minute gentle walk to the Sala Daeng BTS and no problem at all. If anything, we found it a nicer walk than when we've previously stayed at hotels on the Sukhumvit - a road which is so polluted with car fumes.

The pool was stunning and the staff all really friendly and helpful. We only wish we could have stayed longer and tried the spa and Celadon, but I'm certain that next time we're in Bangkok, this will be our hotel of choice.

Room Tip: We had a superior room and for most travellers this would be more than adequate. We asked for a room...

A truly amazing experience.

The rooms were spacious and very elegant. The staff were always attentive and helpful.

The concierge services were brilliant as we attended the thai boxing which was an experience of a life time, we got there by scooter taxi which was riveting.

By far the best satays we had in thailand. The best peanut sauce ever!!! The Thai restaurant was a great introduction to the traditional thai cuisine and a wonderful start to our honeymoon.

Sukhothai seems to be living on the reviews of days past? Albeit it a beautiful property, it is very run down. When I travel internationally, I have learned very well to lower my standards. But how low? The Sukhothai has now thought me I must lower them considerably more! A 5 star property with an overflowing toilet and a shower that leaks water, which covers the entire bathroom floor (safety hazard) is considered acceptable. Although the paying client says the room should not be in service, the property manager says, in the most lofty tone, "it is." Well, obviosly it is, we've stayed in it for 7 days! Even so, our holiday was repeatedly interrupted, so your staff could sttempt to fix the problem, unsuccessfully. The biggest problem isn't the run down property, or the plumbing issues, which members of the management team admitted they've had for close to a year, it's their blatant disregard for any customer satisfaction. In fact, the hotel manager yelled at me while pointing her finger in my face, not 2 inches from my nose! This seems a popular trend at the Sukhothai; that pompous arrogance where they don't need paying customers money. I would imagine the run down condition of the property reflects the poor attitude to the customers? Perhaps if the staff were properly trained, starting with the general manager, the hotel would be in better financial condition? Just a thought.
