“Oasis in the city, the power of calm”
Reviewed April 18, 2012

Sometimes calm is power. The moment you walk into Sukhothai, you instantly feel calm down, no matter how busy outside is. Kerry Hill and Ed Tuttle did a excellent job making this hotel a oasis in the city of Bangkok.

The best thing about this place is all the wood panels, furnitures and floors are made of some special wood from Burma. It has a natural aroma that keeps away insects and calm you down. This is not normal in a hotel this scale because it is very expensive. Even the Oriental just use this type of wood in its SPA.

The service here stands out as well. Attentive but not intrusive.

Best pool and best pool service in Bangkok. Best Thai restaurant. Best italian restaurant.

One has to book its Garden Suite. Best suite here in the hotel looking at the central garden. Very high ceiling and huge bathroom.

Cannot wait to go back there. :)

we stayed as a family of four and enjoyed every minute of it. The room was spacious, clean and well designed. Was quiet. The staff was incredibly nice. The food was delicious and spa experience was a very good one. Somewhat out of the way, I guess it is more of a business hotel than a tourist hotel. But still a very good one.

We arrived at Bangkok airport and were met with the hotel airport pickup, definitely recommend this service. The checkin was done in our room with the staff showing us every detail of the room, we had a superior room. Unfortunately things went downhill very there. The TV didn't work properly and it took 3 phone calls to get someone up to fix the volume, even changing the remote, eventually they taped the received on the TV so that it could receive the remote signal! The bedside clock was set on the right time so staff had to be called to fix this, should have been done by cleaning staff prior to us arriving. The food by the pool was very delicious but you need to allow a least 45 minutes for a soup and one occasion my husbands meal hadn't arrived within 30 minutes so we left the pool area. The pool was lovely though and lots of deck chairs to cater for everyone. The breakfast was amazing, and the morning staff in the restaurant were very attentive and ready to assist in anyway. I was very disappointed in this hotel as it was recommended by a friend, wouldn't return this this hotel

I have stayed in the Sukhothai many more times since my last review, including once during the dark days following the street riots and occupancy was below 40%. How the hotel's management and its brilliant staff manage to maintain its high standards and keep the property relevant amidst the competition is impressive.

Through the years I've stayed in many of their room types ranging from the Superior Room to the Deluxe Suite, and I've been comfortable in all. The location isn't an issue for me - taxis are very easy to come by, and it's an easy 10 min walk to the street vendors on Saladaeng/Silom roads.

My last stay was in an updated Superior Room over Christmas 2011. The changes inside the room are subtle but most welcome e.g. improved shower & toilet equipment, smarter lighting, new TV & entertainment console, and an espresso machine. The elegant and calm ambience hasn't changed and thankfully neither did the daily serving of delectable chocolate truffles! The Sukhothai is never about flashy glitz, and the upgrading is true to that philosophy. We felt completely at home.

The breakfast buffet at the Colonnade was delightful as always, and so were the staff. Smiles all around, efficient and attentive without being over-bearing. We used the well-equipped gym, although it deserves a much larger space. It does feel cramped.

I hope to return to the Sukhothai soon. The room rates are often prohibitive but it's a great place for an indulgent break. I've stayed at the Metropolitan, Banyan Tree, The Intercontinental and the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit - all were good in their own ways. I haven't tried any of the top-rated hotels by the Chao Praya nor, having visited all of them, do I care to. The Sukhothai is still the one for me.

The location was not really our taste, but the interior and quality of the service was very good.
We loved the deco and the staff. The pool was a little poor decorated, for the hotel standard.
Also the train-station was not close by, but taxis are not expensive in Bangkok.

After seeing the beautiful photos on the website, I was expecting a high standard. I have not been to Bangkok for a long time but have spent time in beautiful Thai properties in Phuket and Koh Samui. I was so disappointed in our room, the corridors and lifts. They are old and in need of an update. The corridors had furniture stacked in corners and the lift was small and dirty. Our room was very dark with dark wood and a black bathroom, all a bit depressing.
The big plus was the fantastic breakfast and service in this area. We also ate at the Thai restaurant which was very pleasant with lovely food and wine. The pool area is fantastic and the pizzas are amazing although a touch pricey.
The staff was very helpful especially when we asked for a later checkout due to our departure time at the airport.
I went to a great spa treatment just down the road at Healthland.. Thai massage, 2 hrs for 440 baht..compared to the very expensive one offered at this hotel. The location of the hotel is great if you want to shop at patpong markets and it is only a short walk to the sky train. You are also right next to the Banyon Tree and the amazing rooftop bar and restaurant. A must for a drink!
The experience at the hotel was fine but they really need to update rooms and corridors if they are goiNg to call themselves 5 star.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for taking your valuable time to post your comments on Trip Advisor regarding your recent visit to The Sukhothai Bangkok.

We are delighted to learn that you have enjoyed your stay with us. Your feedback is greatly appreciated that you were fully satisfied with our fantactic breakfast and service at The Colonnade, great authentic Thai food and wine at Celadon, cozy Pool with fabulous pizza served in this area and lastly with the flexibility in extending late check-out for your stay. Your comments had been shared with our team and they appreciated the positive comments and delighted to be at your service.

On the other hand, we have taken note of your comments regarding the age of the hotel rooms and corridor. The Sukhothai Bangkok was developed in early 1990s, with the aim of offering discerning visitors to Bangkok, the opportunity to experience authentic Thai History and architecture of the Sukhothai period, set in spacious, beautiful and serene garden in the heart of bustling city like Bangkok. Our world famouse designer, Mr. Edward Tuttle had spent his 7 months in the Sukhothai Province to be inspired with the art and architecture in that period in his design work. From that the Sukhothai Bangkok was beautifully designed and this place is now filled with history, treasure and memories.

We are continuously striving to maintain this legendary and heritage of hotel, with all imaginable modern facilities and amenities, including the upgraded in the technologies. The room that you have stayed in had been recently renovated and we have never stopped in improving our facilities as well as maintained the design and architecture. We deeply apologized that our team member was rooming you the wrong direction of the rooms and corridor that we closed out for maintenance. The department heads concerned were briefed and ensure that the team is fully aware to avoid the reoccurrence,

At The Sukhothai Bangkok, one of The Leading Hotels of the World, we strive to meet your needs and expectations; therefore your feedback is very important to us. We appreciate the time you took to share your concerns, and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the future.

I stayed at The Sukhothai on the 5 and 6 Oct 2011. The hotel is fantastic. The service is brilliant. The food is fantastic. And the meeting room has all you need to organise a presentation for your clients. I tried many 5 star hotels in Bangkok (Shangri La, Le Bua, etc) and I definitely recommend The Sukhothai as a great place to stay.
The only problem for me is the location that I find unconvenient.
