We have stayed at the Peninsula a number of times and always find it very enjoyable. For reference we typically stay at Aman and Four Seasons resorts and hotels elsewhere. A riverside location is a must in Bangkok as the easiest way to get around is by boat and watching the waterway is endlessly fascinating entertainment. Their complimentary boat ride across the river is so easy and fun that I wouldn't want to stay on the opposite side. It's also lovely to sit and have the amazing Peninsula breakfast cooled by their fans and the breeze over the water. Though the room and lobby decor don't seem to be so modern or interesting at first glance it is a soothing and cocoon-like environment to escape to after a hot, busy day in Bangkok. The rooms are the quietest we have experienced and every one has a view unlike other 5 Star hotels by the water. The Peninsula also feels much more intimate and exclusive than the Mandarin Oriental or Shangri-La and generally has excellent service all around. The spa is a special treat. It is one of the most beautiful in the world and my treatments have always been very good. My only complaints are that on our last visit the temperature of the gorgeous and iconic swimming pool was too cold to enjoy and the pool service was lacking. It had been better in the past. It would be nice if a pool attendant would bring a towel as soon as you arrive without having to ask and you wouldn't have to retreat to the hot tub on a warm day in order to get in the water. Also, the food in the Thai restaurant is not authentically spicy enough for our tastes even though we asked for "Thai spicy." However, we will not consider staying anywhere else Bangkok as it is a truly special hotel. Update the room decor a bit, heat-up the pool, improve the pool service, and make the food a bit spicier and it would be perfect!

Room tip: All rooms have views, but the higher you are the more quiet the room and the better the view over the river.

Dear ChoosyTraveler,

Many thanks for your detailed review as well as your loyalty to The Peninsula Bangkok.

What we certainly appreciate in your review is the constructive comments and observations. While you can rest assured that we will be working hard on the pool service as well as the authenticity of our Thai Restaurant dishes in terms of spiciness, heating our outdoor pool might be something of a bigger scale project. We will nevertheless look into it.

It would be our pleasure to welcoming you back soon again.

Sincerely,
Rolf Buehlmann

We had two adjoining rooms for our family of four. The rooms were extremely well-appointed, clean and spacious. The view was spectacular. Our only regret is that we were so busy enjoying the sights and experiences of Bangkok, we did not have very much time to enjoy the hotel/spa itself. We spent some time at the pool area which was beautiful and had excellent service. The breakfast buffet had wonderful eastern and western choices. My only issue with our stay was with respect to breakfast. The breakfast buffet was included in our room rate. One morning we left for our excursion before the buffet was open and therefore had to grab a bite in the lobby dining area. We were billed for our order (some pastries and coffee - - far less than anything we would have consumed at the buffet). We didn't dispute the charge because we were in a hurry, but it seemed a bit petty to charge us like this. Just a word of caution for anyone in the same boat so you can avoid the same issue. Otherwise, a wonderful stay.

I'm not sure if I was actually given an upgrade but the room felt larger than most 5 star hotels. The decor felt a bit dated but everything is there. The breakfast is lovely and I would have sat by the terrace along the river if not for the sweltering heat. They have a ferry to go across the river but it's hard to get a taxi there for your onward journey (we went to another hotel nearby to get one) - but still better than getting a taxi from the hotel lobby especially if you need to get across the river via the bridge - especially if you have to brave the notorious Bangkok rush hour traffic.

Service throughout the hotel is impeccable and nothing is too much trouble.

Dear timotan,

Bangkok traffic can be a really challenge especially at rush hour. Taking the boat across the river to at least skip some of it is highly recommended depending on the time of day, smart move.

Thank you for your comments about your stay, nice to hear that you appreciated the size of our rooms, they are very generous.

For next time try to plan to visit around the end of the year when it is 'winter' in Bangkok, sitting outside is still warm but much more bearable.

Best regards,
Shane Jolly

Dear francis,

Why shouldn't every holiday start the moment you arrive at the airport! Great to know that you made the most of our hospitality starting from the moment you arrived in Bangkok.

And thank you for recommending us, we really appreciate this high praise. Hopefully we will see you back with us too.
