The Plaza Athenee is an absolutely beautiful hotel with a great pool and professional staff! Stayed twice this trip and would highly recommend booking a Royal Club room as they provide a better view and I feel are more comfortable than the deluxe rooms due to more space; with the couch making the room feel more homely. The shrimp Pad Thai that I had by the pool was beautifully done and the pool attendants were very quick, efficient, and friendly. Pool was very nice and pool furniture was very comfortable. The lobby felt very grand yet not snobby and the front desk and concierge were very accommodating and professional. Very nice for business or solo travelers that expect a certain level of service that's not "in your face" but attentive and efficient. I just felt very comfortable there. Beds were comfortable, gym and pool facilities were top notch, good food and drinks, and sincere service.
Outside the hotel, on Wireless Road, there's a little, local Thai restaurant, that was only open for lunch, that had some great food! Doesn't look very foreigner friendly on the outside as I passed by on my way to check-in from Phloen Chit sky train(BTS/closest stop) so I asked the front desk about it and was told only locals really go there; which in my mind means they only speak the local language and it's very authentic and delicious or it's delicious but dirty. Decided to try it out on my second stay there and found they have English menus, are very clean, and seems to be run by a very friendly, traditional Thai family, serving simple, delicious, home-cooking. But yes, knowing the local language would help a lot at that restaurant as they had a specials board that I'm sure where all the good stuff was listed. Packed during lunch... Highly recommended!
