“Disenchanted on return visit”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

We are no strangers to Crowne Plaza hotels worldwide or others in the IHG group and we have stayed at this hotel many times in the last 5 years. Our stay last year was made better by the fact that even though the hotel had changed ownership from Pan Paciifc it had still retained its charm, Thai traditions and service standards. To our utter disappointment this appears to no longer be the case. We returned to stay at this hotel this year for 4 nights following a 2 week stay in Pattaya for Christmas & New Year. Our check in experience was disappointing, our dates were misquoted and our debit card was refused as pre authorisation, cash or credit card only!. As Platinum priority club members we usually expect our room to be available on check in but this was not the case though this decision was changed some time during the check in. Our room when we arrived smelled strongly of cigarette smoke and had not been serviced properly, coat hangers left lying around, a broken bathroom tap. We made use of the pool and spa areas during our stay and as always the spa treatments and service were of the highest standard though the pool side service was disappointing, In the past we have enjoyed tranquil settings with luxurious teak day beds and soft mattresses to lounge around on, these were disappearing before our eyes as workman carried them away to replace with cheap lightweight aluminium loungers, tables and chairs, comfort and leisure is now a thing of the past, practicality and low cost are now a benefit enjoyed by the hotel. We did not use the restaurant as we feel it is expensive though the service and drinks in the Finishing Post bar is a must during any stay the ambiance and setting transport you to a tradtional Thai world which is a million miles from the corporate, loud music, indistinct environment of the public areas. We did have the opportunity to chat to the Manager and voice our disappointment but like all corporate establishments decisions are often made elsewhere at meetings detached from the immediate surroundings so we do not expect anything to change for the better which is why on our next visit to Bangkok we will be looking to take our patronage elsewhere.

Good rooms! and I really like the hotel's ambience and the electronic c.r. was very convenient...
Comfy bed! too! All you need in the room was there....and even the scenic view outside the window! Love to stay here for long....but the price is a little bit high...

Got in late and hotel was easy enough to find and is within walking distance of the Sala Daeng station.

The lobby is on the 23 floor which is fun. The staff were super efficient and I was in my room within minutes.

The rooms are amazing with a sitting area, and there is a nice sense of spaciousness.

The bathroom is the winner here with an amazing shower and amenities to match.

Overall a great stay.

We staied at the 24th floor and the view was amazing, especially in the night, with all the lights on. The room was big enough and modern (it was room for an extra bed) and the bathroom was a little Sci-Fi, with buttons on the toilet. The restaurant for the breakfast was very cosy and beautiful. You have to try, if you go to Bangkok, the food on the street; it is amazing! It's the best thai food that I ever eaten! Bangkok it is a great city, with lots of places to visit, lots of temples, beautiful people. We were helped by a woman, in our first day, it was unbelievable. She went with us, stoped a tuk-tuk and give us a ride to a great fish and seefood restaurant, where we tasted the greates seaafood ever! She didn't spoke English, but with people like her it doesn't matter! Good people speake the same language! We thank her and all the people from Thailand for their spirit and smiles!

From the moment we arrived we were blown away with this superb hotel, everything about it is excellent, the food is out of this world, the club lounge manager is so good at his job he will go far in the hotel industry as will Paula Elliss, she is such an ambassador for the hotel, (hope your Mum's better). The hotel itself is well situated in Bangkok for all types of sight seeing the railway station is just a couple of minutes away, the night markets are just around the corner.

Thank you one and all for making our stay in Bangkok so memorable, Harry & Hazel

This Crowne Plaza is no Holiday Inn. It has been purchased by the Intercontinental Hotel group, and it is a five-star property, at least on the high levels.

My wife and I arrived, and the ground floor is not the lobby, but there were concierges there to greet us and show us to the express elevator to the lobby on the 24th floor. We emerged into one of the most beautiful and relaxing lobby areas I have ever seen. To check in, at least for us (I don't know if all guests get this), there is no "desk". Instead, a beautiful and friendly woman awaited us at a cushy desk where we sat on cushy chairs to check in, in a mellow, softly-lit environment. Almost all the staff, by the way, speak perfect English, so no need to learn Thai for the hotel, anyway.

Our room, on the 28th floor, was not the typical small Asian hotel room. It was HUGE, almost like a suite, with a fainting couch and a large king bed with one of the most comfortable matresses ever. They even had a "pillow menu" so if you didn't like your pillow, you could choose from about 8 varieties. The view from our huge window was fabulous, seeing part of the city except that we did not have a view of the Chao Phraya river, since the hotel is not right on the shore (a minior drawback). The bathroom was splendiforous, with large bathtub, rainwater shower, all in marble and complimentary bathrobes were provided. The a/c was perfect and easily adjustable, and was soundless.

Now for the rest of the hotel.....

The hotel has 2 bars and 3 or 4 restaurants, and considering it has maybe only around 150 rooms, that is plentiful enough to assure you will get in whenever you wish. The first night we went to the "Finishing Past", the more intimate of the bars. The hostess greeted us warmly and escorted us to our plush sofa overlooking the city. The room was paneled in mahogany with incredible sculptures, and again, softly lit (very softly, so watch your step). The drinks were great and large, and not too pricey. As we were lucky enough to be the only customers at that time, we were royally treated.

The other bar, the Panorama, really has a panoramic view, and is also open for brunch/breakfast daily. The brunch was excellent. First the servers come and serve you coffee, tea and/or juice (or a bloody Mary), plus a hot croissant (almost as good as you get in Paris). Then you walk to the enormous buffet, which has a wide variety of food for every taste, from a Japanese area (lots of Japanese businesspeople seem to like this hotel) with things like Miso Soup, to a Chinese Area, to an "American/British/Aussie" area serving eggs, hams, bacon, etc.., to a healthy area, with cereals, yogurts, etc, to a carving board with delicious turkey and ham. I think the brunch is around $ 15 per person, but if you stay on a deluxe floor, it is included at no extra charge.

There is a Chinese restaurant on the 23rd floor. I forget the name, but it was one of the best we have ever visited (only Chang Palace was better on our Asian trip). It was not too crowded (I think the whole hotel was not too busy during our first two nights stay on a weekend) and we were treated like visiting heads of state!! I am NOT exaggerating. The chef was a winner on "Iron Chef" and the food reflected that. The captain/headwaiter fawned all over us. It was almost too much but once he saw we were pretty easygoing, he relaxed a bit. All the staff were only seconds away. If you slightly glanced in their direction, they rushed to your table. We had incredibly wonderful food, highlighted by a "hot pot", which is like a deep skillet or shallow crock pot which our waiter plugged into the nearby wall. Then we were given an endless array of meats, poultry, fish, seafoods, veggies, noodles, etc., each on a different plate, and after the pot, filled with delicious broth, was bubbling away, you simply dropped your food into the broth, and took it ouy when it was done. It was slightly spicy (this is Thailand you know) but not overdone, so we really enjoyed it. The place itself was very pretty, done of course in high-Chinese style, although a little too well-lit. The acoustics of this somewhat large space were excellent, with no noise to speak of.

All of the above, which included unlimited free Singha Beer, cost both of us around $ 45-50! SImply unbelievable!!!

And then, if the above were not enough, there was the pool and spa/gym complex on the roof. We were once again greeted like royalty (we were starting to get used to it by then) and given plush robes. The pool is outdoors on the roof, but it is by far the best rooftop pool I have ever seen. The pool is surrounded by trellises on wood and concrete posts, and at the far end is a beautiful waterfall. When we got outside, before we could even select our chaises, two people came out and asked us where we would like to "lounge" and then placed plush towels on the lounges and have us extra pool towels. The chaise lounges themselves were huge and really comfortable. You could also get up and look out at the city skyline if all of this bored you. The pool itself is heated, but not overly, and is "sparking" clean, and a sheer delight to swim or float around in. I just lay there for about 15 minutes on my back and looked at the clouds in the sky. The spa and gym looked luxurius, but we really didn't have the spare time to really get any treatments, although we were given a tour and it all looked great. They have a sauna, the usual exercise equipment (highest-end) and massage and other spa-type treatments are available at cost (not too bad compared to my spa at home, which costs twice as much).

I could go on and on, but you get the picuture, right? If I return to Bankok, I will always stay here and nowhere else. It is a gem, and our luxury-level rooms cost us about $ 95 a might INCLUDING free brunch daily (figure equivalent to $ 500 or more a night in New York). We did visit some of the better-know luxury hotels like the Banyan Tree to have drinks on some splendid rooftop bars. We walked around the lobbies and such, and they all seemed very nice, but not as soledned (to our tsates at least) as the Crowne Plaza, and the price was at least 3 times higer, so why bnther?

WHat a gem!

Room Tip: Book far in advance to get a great deal on a super-deluxe room. Also rates may vary significantly de...
