“Tourists should stay here if they can get a good rate”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

Five stars may be a bit generous for this older 4-star hotel, but I'm giving it this rating so that other tourists might understand the attractiveness of this lodging option.

First, Bangkok is a difficult city for travellers, and you MUST factor in location in choosing your hotel. For tourists, I think the Royal Orchid is extremely well located. Traffic is horrific in Bangkok, so you need a way to get around. The Royal Orchid is right on the river, with a luxury free private boat to the Skytrain station every half hour. Admittedly, this connection is a bit time-consuming, but it's a very pleasant transport option to "downtown," and better than other alternatives at peak times (like a taxi).

The hotel is also a stop on the river ferry, which will take you to many of the major tourist attractions, like the Royal Palace. It's a pitty that the ferry is poorly run; boats are far less frequent than you'd expect (we waited, on average, 20 minutes for a boat), they're crowded, and service stops early in the evening. But it's still the best transport option in town if you're destination is along the river. It's also very scenic.

We also greatly enjoyed our river view from the hotel. Ask for a high floor. Very peaceful and beautiful, in a city a little short of peace and beauty.

The hotel itself is a little old, but still in excellent condition. Our room was modern and well equipped. Beds are harder than in the West, but still very comfortable (and much softer than what you'd find in a non-Western hotel in Asia). Helpful and pleasant staff. I highly recommend a swim in the hotel's "garden pool," which is a bit hidden. A resort-quality pool area.

Hotel is also a short taxi ride from the main train station.

We stayed on the "cash & points" rate from the Starwood Preferred Guest loyalty program. A great deal if you're a participant in that program.

Consider a meal at the Ruen Urai restaurant, a short taxi ride away. Peaceful and delicious Thai food in a garden setting. Not many good dining options in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, except their own expensive options.

Dear Dave’s_reviews,

Thank you for your informative review and your wonderful compliments on the hotel, and our staff. I have passed on your compliments to our team which will further motivate them.
I am glad you enjoyed the garden pool which is indeed a great place to relax and enjoy the day. There is a family of peacocks that live in our garden and hopefully you got to see this as well. We look forward to seeing you again!

Regards,
Panita B.

We just stayed at the Sheraton, Bangkok for 2 nights. We found the service to be excellent and the staff were friendly and accommodating. We were upgraded from the most standard room to the next category room which was on the 22nd floor and had a fantastic river view. The hotel is situated right by the pier, so using river transport is totally painless. The reasons I have not given the hotel 5 stars are the following: a) there was no stand alone shower, only one over the bath and b) there was no turndown service. Everything else was great through and I would recommend it for other travellers.

We stayed here only for one night as we where going to koh samed the next day. The hotel has a good location about 7 minutes with taxi to MBK Mall and directly by the river. The hotel has a good standard everybody is nice and welcoming. The rooms are very clean and up to date. I had roomservice at night and the hamburger I ordered was very good!
The breakfast was very good alot to choose from.
Overall the hotel was very good.

I had read in a travel guide that a key to enjoying Bangkok is to stay in a hotel on the River Chao Phraya. We took this advice and booked here. We weren't disappointed. We woke in our Tower room to a fabulous view of the Chao Phraya River. After breakfast in Etc on the River, a beautiful outdoor location with up close views of river ferry boats, we quickly jumped on the Chao Phraya Express to head up the river to the star attractions. It was easy to get to these places and easy to get home. That says a lot in a congested city like Bangkok. The staff were very helpful. Our Tower Room was very nice, although not huge. The staff at the Tower Lounge were very helpful. There are two pools, and for those with kids I would suggest the larger kidney shaped pool. For singles and couples the pool in the front is better. In fact, I loved this pool and its great view of the river. If you are considering paying a bit extra to upgrade to the Tower room with the included breakfast, snacks and drinks ... it's well worth it. Do the math and you will see. My only criticism and I hope the management see this -- they need to change the furniture in the Tower Lounge. It's very worn out and doesn't fit in with the high standards of the rest of this hotel. Also, skip the River City shopping centre next door. It's over priced --head to the markets!

We stayed for our first two nights in Thailand before heading off to Hua Hin for Christmas and New Year and returned on 1st Jan before our early flight home. The hotel is lovely with very attentive staff and fantastic restaurants offering a wide variety of cuisines. The food was suberb in the Thai, Sambal, Etc restaurants but unfortunately wasn't there long enough to sample the italian. The bar area was very relaxing with friendly staff but the highlight was the stunning view of the river. The courtesy ferry to the skytrain was lovely and located next door was the stop for the regular river taxi which can take you direct to the Grand Palace. The two pools were beautiful and had we the time we would have spend some time in them. A great place for both business & pleasure and just far enough away from the hustle & bustle of the city.

Compared to all the other hotels/places I stayed in Thailand this hotel was great. The room was clean and well kept. We were on the 22nd floor with amazing views. We went out in the evening to the bars on the strip and I felt it was easy to get around the city from this hotel. I'd definitely say there again!

We stayed there for the Loy Krathong festival. That is the good and the bad. It was very difficult to arrive at the hotel. Once we finally made it to the we had to wait a long time for the boat to come, although I repeatedly called the hotel. Our view from the room however was amazing!!!
The hotel common areas and rooms are somewhat dated and not very well maintained. My bed linnens actually smelled moldy. Perhaps that is the disadvantage of staying right on the river. The breakfast has a large variety of foods, but presentation could be better. It is a large hotel and breakfast feels like a busy train station. The omlette station is overly busy and I gave up waiting. The service is not very attentive. The gym and pools seem fine, although I did not use. The concierge seems to be very knowledabgle, although I had little interaction.

Room Tip: Choose a River view room.
