Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers

As a regular visitor to Bangkok, we often stay at the Royal Orchid, because it's got the most stunning views over the river. As a Starwood Club member, we use the Club Lounge on the top floor and it's fascinating sitting twentysomething floors above the river watching the neverending traffic way below. The hotel has a shuttle boat that connects with the Skytrain which is very easy to use, so being out of the main entertainment and shopping district is not really a problem. And for a lot of fun try a tuk-tuk rather than a taxi to get back to the hotel with all your shopping, it's twice as fast, and much more Real Bangkok!

The hotel is standard Sheraton fare, too much oversized furniture .... but hey, the wall of glass overlooking the river is worth banging shins on beds etc. All the rooms overlook the river, so watch out when you get invited to pay a premium (or upgrade) to a "view room" as a travel agent sold me on my first visit years ago. We love the hotel's Thara Thong restaurant - especially the outdoor seating over the river - it's one of the highlights of every visit to Bangkok!

Our 4th stay & all have been excellent. The foyer is so Thai. The hotel is beautifully mantained ,the rooms excellent with the ever changing river panorama. Great pools & gym. Staff service has always been excellent. Food is excellent.
Shuttle boat to BTS station a great improvement.. The area around is typically crowded Bangkok but fascinating to walk around & safe at night.
We always stay here each visit to Thailand.

We stayed as a family of 2 adults and 1 14yr old and 1 18 month old. We all loved it. We were given a better room just for joining the hotel's loyalty scheme. We had a fantastic view of the river which was always changing. We were given a plate of seasonal Thai fruit which was a nice touch.

After reading recent bad reviews I was nervous about what to expect and had contemplated changing hotels. I'm so glad that we didn't. The price was great, the service great and the position was ideal.

We had two concerns about the hotel.

1) There is still a lot of noise during the day from the hotel's upgrade

2) Upon checkout we were charged in £'s without the option of paying in Bahts

Don't let this bother you though, who's in the hotel room during the day in Bangkok??

I a always treat myself to a couple of nights at the Royal Orchid Sheraton when I visit Bangkok. It just feels good. Service is best in the world, location in unequalled in BKK and why not -- I spend a bit more and get the room up in the Executive Towers, so that I get free laundry, free cocktails in the afternoon, and even more pampering... definitely recommended.

I just returned from a 4 night stay. I agree with one of the reviews that the ROS is a 4* but that is what i like in this hotel. It has a relaxed resort atmoshphere, def not stuffy. You can walk through the hotel lobby in just shorts and T-shirt and sandles and not feel intimidated by oppulant surroundings, although the hotel is no dump.

The food at the hotel is great, more expensive than outside of course, but it is good quality and safe to eat. No tummy upsets this time (that's a first for bangkok)). The breakfast was the best but also the food around the garden pool was v good. As was the service throughout the hotel. I caught up with emails and news from hotel on my laptop on the free WiFi zone. The room was always made up when I returned from Breakfast (how did they do that all the time). So the room was clean and fresh for the rest of the day. Amenties were topped up every afternoon by a maid with a trolley around 5pm every day. Great !!, more coffee for the drip machine, more bottle water.

I was upgraded to a superior deluxe room, which was located on an upper floor (level 18). The view of the river was spectacular. Life on the river is in full view and it is non stop, great to sit by the window with a fresh brewed coffee in hand.

I have always stayed at the Amari watergate which is nice, but the atmosphere at the ROS is better because of it's layback style and location. The area around the hotel is interesting. It's run down because it was the site where the capital was moved to from across the river to a site called Bangrak (that is Bangkok). It was the area set aside for 'farangs' (foreginers) so the Portugese and French embassies are nearby located in 19th c buildings. Its worth a walk around this area to see the old Bangkok.

Yes, access to the BTS can be a problem, I didn't catch a taxi but waited by the pier observing Bangkok life for a return ferry to the hotel. Bangkok is a hectic city and any opportunity to sit and watch it go by is a benefit.

Would I stay here again? Def..... and the reasons are because of its location near the river, the wonderful sunsets from the room across Bangkok, the breakfast and the garden pool, whicbh has the feel of a tropical garden. Enjoy.

Family stay in two rooms overlooking the river which is a must. Rooms clean and good and staff helpful and attentive. Superb buffett breakfast, free internet and a superb lower pool and swim up bar. Free ferry to the MDS station which was uselful for the shopping trips and easy to use. MDS Dock not the best place but right next to the station and although grubby its not threatening. All sight seeing trips are not expensive in our terms and a guide makes a world of difference and the hotel organised some trips for us that were not more expensive than street touts.
Ayaunthanya the old capital day trip coach up boat back was very interesting and good value. For fussy family eating visit the top floor food hall at the main shop at the stadium station exit. A wide range of different foods are freshly cooked from asian to pizza from little restuarants on a sort of buffett style and the shop is stuffed full of little market stores at the same or cheaper prices than the nearby street market on the main road.

We stayed for 3 nights at the Sheraton and wished we had been able to stay longer. I have read some of the regative reviews on this site about the hotel and cannot understand them at all, it is like they are written about a different hotel!
We had a lovely spacious, clean and modern room on one of the higher floors with a wonderful view over the river. There was fresh exotic fruit and chocolate on arrival which was a nice surprise. I am very sensative to cigarette smoke and can honestly say I never smelled any smoke or a stale smell (as mentioned by some of the other reviewers) during the whole visit.
The breakfast was outstanding, it took us all of three visits to discover everything, we were particularly impressed with the huge chocolate fountain! The garden pool area was lovely, especially the swim-up cocktail bar.
Yes, the prices are much higher in the hotel than on the streets of bangkok but that is standard for a 5* hotel anywhere in the world. We found the prices were still much cheaper than, England and all the other places we stayed on the rest of our trip.

Bangkok itself needs no introduction, we had an amazing time, but I will mention 2 things which really enhanced our trip:
1) The gallery cafe - a very short walk to the right outside the hotel reception. It was absolutely brilliant for a very good and extremely cheap massage followed by dinner.
2) Do a 'tour with Tong'. She is a brilliant local guide and took us out for the day to see the floating market and a fishermans village - as well as many other un-touristy stops en-route. For our second day we used another of Tong's guides, Aon, for Bangkok itself to help with shopping and general sightseeing - she was brilliant and it really helped to be able to relax and enjoy the trip.

All in all a fantastic stay and we will definately be rushing back at the earliest opportunity.
