Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok

I went back to Thailand in December and again stayed at the Oriental. Upon arrival as I am a previous guest and since the hotel wasn't that busy(I arrived Tue 8th although did get busier later in week) I was offered an upgrade to one of the best suites in the house(while not cheap wasn't ridiculous by Oriental prices). I must say that once again the hotel met all my expectations and did not dissapoint on any level. I have read many reviews on this site and am surprised by the few negative reviews that I have seen. Having stayed in all levels of accomodation here over the years I can honestly say I have never had any issues and the service always was and still is up there with absolutely anywhere in the world. The only drawback for most with the place is the price difference (sometimes 50% dearer than the best of the other 5*) however if you can afford it or if you want to be pampered it is worth it for the experience. It is also in a good location right on the river(easy for boat trips etc) and is very close to the State Tower(Lebua) on Silom Rd. Visiting there is a must for the Sky Bar and the restaurant Scirocco-the highest open air restauarant in the world. Lastly,my partner lost her camera and e-mailed the hotel once home to see if they had it - they didn't but sent piles of photos of Bangkok and the hotel back !!!

My husband and I were eagerly awaiting our return to the Oriental Hotel after a fabulous experience there two years ago.. What a difference two years makes!
Before the hotel was the best value with the best service we have ever had.
This time it was way overpriced and just another big impersonal chain hotel.
Before there was a butler on each floor that raced you to your room to open the door. This time only once did that happen.
Before the breakfast buffet was included with the room rate. This time a cup of tea was $10.
Before there was a complementary appetizer served each afternoon promptly at 5:30. This time it was served after 7 or not at all.
I could go on and on.
The reality is that now it is the "Mandarin Oriental.." another chain hotel and not the wonderful Oriental of old.
Of course the sheets and towels were wonderful and the view great.. but just don't expect the "wow" of the past. You will be disappointed. And the prices, of course, have gone up a lot..

One of the world's great hotels. I learned the average length of service for MO's current employees is something like 15+ years - this is a good indicator for the standard of service provided.

In room check-in, a lift operator that knows your name and floor on day one, quality F&B make this a top property.

The butler per floor is exceptional - several properties are providing butlers these days but the MO does it best - unimposing service that anticipates your needs;
e.g. returning from the steamy BKK weather we were greeted by our butler who opened the door and brought fresh gazpacho to revitalise us.
e.g.2 my wife's shoe heel broke an hour before we were supposed to attend a dinner, butler arranged the MO boat to pick us up and take us to a river-side shop to buy a replacement - the boat waited for us and took us back to the hotel! Incredible service.

Our room was a corner suite with huge bathroom and separate lounge with an outdoor balcony.

Only recommendation for improvement was that the TV needs updating.

Went to have a look at this hotel as I come to BKK 10 times each year. Security however would not even let me in to look as I was not dressed well enough. I was wearing shorts, polo top and shoes and sox. We asked to speak to the security manager but made not difference. This hotel does not deserve anyone's business. Any hotel that treats a potential customer like this is a joke. Don't stay here and tell all your friends this hotel is run by rude snobs

Truly exceptional hotel, greeted promptly, free room upgrade with beautiful river views.Staff extremely friendly, breakfast was a enjoyable experience. Staff remembered our drinks/coffee's (coffee was gourmet) they even remembered how many we had, they were always hovering in the background to make our stay positive. The staff also knew our names even though we stayed for only 3 days. The Thai restuarant accross the river was 'divine' to say the least. First time we stayed at this hotel in Bangkok and would definately be back. We travelled with a young family and were given complementary m&m's, milkshakes and roasted coconunt chips upon arrival..needless to say the kids were ecstatic and stayed up late eating all the goodies. Looking forward to returning for a much longer stay. The hotel became very busy towards the end of the week due to a wedding but the service didn't change...still kept the standards....5 stars all round

For the second time in less than 2 years we stayed at the legendary sensational Oriental. For this long 10 nights stay we choose a Deluxe State room. It was dreamily fantastic: very spacious, with a breathtaking river view, a small balcony with chairs and table (but difficult to stay there at night because of the mosquitoes…), an amazing decoration with teck wood and silk, top technology equipment, etc…
As the legend says, the service and the preoccupation for detail are close to perfection at the Oriental. Flowers, welcome bottle of Champagne, daily appetizers, fresh fruits, etc…: so many little attentions to make your stay unforgettable and let you cradled as a privileged guest. Of course the service is always very professional and smiling: you’re in the best Thailand (Asian ? World?) hotel after all! Director’s cocktail, one time per week, is something out of time and precious, like a gem.
We tried almost all the restaurants and bars: China House, Verandah, Lord Jim, River Terrace, Normandy, Bamboo bar (ah, the Premium Margaritas…!!!), . The quality of the food is always unquestionable and everything is very good, if not delicious: congratulation!
The Oriental has definitely something magic, something difficult to describe, maybe the incredible impression that perfection is finally accessible, that watching to everything you won’t find any mistake, but just feel well, fantastically well. You can probably find more luxurious or modern options in Bangkok, but for sure this hotel is the only one to have a real genuine soul. The new Management (which has changed this year) must be really aware of this unique situation, which must be preserved at any cost. Please don’t change anything, or only for better, if possible, and we’ll be back for a third stay, for sure.
One last comment: internet access is now like air or water: most hotels don’t charge for it! Please make an effort!
