My wife and I stayed here for 2 days and it is certainly a very nice high end hotel with great service. However, despite that, I would not stay here again. The service level is off the charts good (as expected) and the property is very scenic, but it is also extremely formal. If you prefer this, you may enjoy, but I believe you can have a high level of service without the formality that almost made me feel uncomfortable.

In addition, although right on the river - which is kind of cool, the location is not very central and getting to other areas requires some effort. Not the end of the world but we prefer to be able to walk from the hotel without always needing a cab or the sky train. Also, this hotel is very expensive for Bangkok. If money is no object and you don't look at bills, fine, but if you prefer to stay in nice places for a fair price I'm not sure this is for you. To put it in perspective, they charged $21/night for Internet (really in 2013 for a high quality property?) an our breakfast buffet was $100 for 2! It was good but come on, I've had similar buffets all over the world for $25 or less.

Finally, although nice, the room was far from anything special. It was nice they brought you a small try of fruit each night.

Therefore, if you really want extraordinary service but at an extreme premium price this is the place for you. If you want an easily accessible high end hotel I would look elsewhere.

Where do we begin? The smartly uniformed guy opening your car door for you? The 4-5 staff members standing at the entrance to greet you? The traditionally garb Thai woman handing us guys orchids on a wrist band of freshly cut flowers? The elevator men deep bowing as they hold the door open for you? The floor butler who serves you lemongrass tea - a cold drink that is an outstanding experience in itself? From the moment you enter to the moment you leave, each guest is treated like royalty - and it's a jarring experience at first, especially if you're not used to it. Then you enter the room, which is beautiful - comfortable bed, linens, towels, a writing desk, and more fresh flowers. Pillows of varying stiffness would be a nice touch - mine were too soft, and it made sleeping slightly less comfortable. But on another point - I have never seen a hotel property use so many fresh flowers. They are on little cards that you get with bed turnover, containing a brief poem or quote to wish you a good night's sleep. They are on trays when drinks are served. Yes, you will pay a lot for this experience - but honestly, if the price is in a similar tier as other places you're considering, why not go for something outstanding? There is the romantic boat ride to the other side of the property, containing a superb clean gym with new equipment, even a Smith-style squat rack (though no more than US 250 lbs can be put onto it - good enough for most guests - since there are not multiple sizes in what goes on this bar, and the bar can only hold up to 10 round weights, five per side). Off the bathroom is a jacuzzi - that was a disappointment. Small, jets comfortable but not especially powerful, and a step in that is more like a sliding curve - easy to misjudge, so be careful when entering. Also on this side island is their Thai Cultural Center, offering traditional dance, martial arts skills, and more along with a buffet dinner. This is one of about 7 restaurants on the property, including Chinese in the front off the driveway (excellent), Thai and casual in the back facing the river, a very large buffet on the river, an Italian restaurant on the river (these 2 we didn't try), a white wicker courtyard for high tea in their original 1870s building (nice area), and an upscale restaurant on an upper floor. I think I forgot to mention the excellent violin quartet in the main lobby, performing for a few hours each evening. There are two pools - a small infinity pool facing the river, which was in an off location and one of our favorite spot, and the larger pool visible from most of the rooms. That larger pool has one surprise - the only part most people can stand in is the edge closest to the greeting station, perhaps the first 25 feet or so in. After that, you're on your own, for 80% of this very large pool - so watch your kids carefully, and make sure they stay near the shallow end. The only problem we encountered as avid nonsmokers were the cigar smokers in the restaurants, outside hallways, and places other than the designated smoking area - but we were assured by management that more of the property would be going smokefree within the next few weeks, so we expect other nonsmoking guests will have a better experience here after mid-September or early October 2013 that we did. In the interim, there is a second hallway through the old part of the hotel that can take you to the boat dock on the other side, and the door is kept open, so you don't have to subject yourself to the smokefest in the main outdoor hall by the Bamboo Bar to get to the boat docks and enjoy the other island. Once that problem is better resolved, we can say without qualification that the Mandarin Oriental is one of the best hotel properties we've ever stayed in, and that it is well worth whatever price you pay to have a top-notch staying experience.

Room Tip: I don't think there's a bad room in the house.

We stayed here to start our 3 week honeymoon in Thailand. It is just as it's reputation suggests, the very finest in luxury accommodations and service. It's beautiful! Just beautiful! Fresh flowers everywhere, fresh fruit in our room every day. The live string quartet in the lobby each evening with the timeless furnishings and draping flower arrangements that make you believe you have stepped in the luxury of a past era........which you have........
We loved it!

Great place where you are treated like royalty. Loved the buffet breakfast and feeding the fish in the river with the leftover bread! Next stop the swimming pool (could be a tiny bit bigger but people mostly sunbathe anyway). For lunch try the buffet across the river with the hotel's boat to take you.
