Really superb luxury hotel, with splendid riverside location. We stayed here as part of our 3 week trip to Thailand & Hong Kong. I think this is probably the best city hotel we have stayed at in recent years.

The staff were very helpful, welcoming and always peased to do their best to look after guests, and we felt their attitude was real, natural and not forced.

Our room was on the 12th floor with butler service, overlooking the river, which it was always busy. The bathroom was spectacular, and clearly very recently refurbished, the room was not large but adequate.

There are 3 restaurants on the riverside terrace and we did not eat out at all as it was wonderful to sit beside the rive and simply watch what was going on.

The hotel has a traditional Thai restaurant on the opposite side of the river with a constantly running ferry to take guest across. We ate at it on one occasion, when the traditional Thai dancers were performing which was enthralling - about twenty dancers and with each dance there was a "crib card" to explain what the dance was all about and the different parts of it, very useful to understand it all. The meal was a Thai banquet, about 14 different dishes, helpful as it meant we did not need to choose ourselves! My wife cannot eat hot / spicey but they were used to this and the dishes were amended / changed accordingly.

Breakfast on the Terrace was an indulgence with a magnificent buffet available, plus waiter sevice if required, every style of food imaginable, and the wonerful view too!

Great hotel, would definitely stay again on a future visit to Bangkok!

Room Tip: Choose a high floor number with a river view

Fuelled by all the rave reviews of the hotel, we decided to stay here on a one night stopover. The staff are indeed a delight and the foyer is very impressive but otherwise I found it dull. Not sure when it had its last makeover - but even though I'm an Eighties fan - I don't want to be stuck in them. Botanical prints abound, a faux Somerset Maughan themed area ... BORING. The hotel has two sections - try and be in the tower which is close to the reception area, unless you enjoy long walks to your room.

Dear GoldieSydney

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us following your recent stay. We are delighted to read that our team exceeded your expectations throughout your stay. Rest assured that we regularly upgrade our facilities whilst carefully preserving the hotel’s 137 years of heritage being the oldest hotel in Southeast Asia. The wing of the hotel you described has actually been shaped throughout decades by the visits of distinguished literary icons such as Joseph Conrad, Noel Coward, James Michener and Somerset Maugham (to name a few). We would be pleased to offer you a history tour during a future visit and we believe that you would enjoy some of the amazing stories the building has to tell.

Sincerely yours

From the moment we were picked up at the airport until we had been helped through domestic check-in when we left Bangkok the Mandarin service was perfect.

Whether it was being taken straight up to our room on arrival, being brought breakfast in our room with a table in the window so we could enjoy the morning view, a day in the spa, my cooking lesson, afternoon tea in the original part of the hotel, the bar, the restaurants or even the gym, the service was fantastic.

We hardly stepped out of the hotel in four days as we made the most of everything that was on offer. Some hotels have a great restaurant, others a great bar and others have the rooms and the location - the Mandarin Oriental has them all and more...

We will plan our next asian holiday with long haul flights in and out of Bangkok rather than Singapore or Hong Kong in order to have a few days in this oasis of calm.

It may be expensive, but it is good value.

We are in Beijing in July and sadly there is no Mandarin Oriental there!

Room Tip: Ask for a river view room on a high floor

Having just been to a nameless '5 Star' hotel in Dubai, and then returned to the Oriental in Bangkok, it amazes me how one is barely tolerable and the Oriental completely sublime. Having reviewed the best hotels in the world for Conde Nast for 20 years, it soothes my soul to be embraced by the superb cuisine and personal attention of one of the world's finest inns.
Bravo to Chef Norbert for 38 years of inventive food, from many countries. Right down to the mangosteen shells carved into lotus blossoms on the breakfast tray. The newly opened Ciao Restaurant on the veranda overlooking the Chao Phraya River has added a sleek and sexy eatery to the roster of dining options here. It is a gathering place for chic, young Bangkok and a most welcome addition for hotel guests.
The levels of service at this hotel surpass imagination. A resort in the middle of an intriguing city, the spa alone is worth the price of admission. With a little restraint on room service and the mini bar, you can easily skip Chiva Som and follow spa cuisine, gym, pool and spa facilities for the same effect. Really. I have done it, and am living proof of the chill factor/physical improvements achievable.
I have left value and room categories vacant. The hotel caters to many budgets, and repeat guests are noted for their loyalty. My preference is for Executive Suite rooms usually, although I have been delightfully happy in the more modest rooms as well as different suites in the Author's Wing. The lower numbers on each floor of the River Wing put you closer to the river, and the Garden Wing is more private from the lobby areas.
The Mandarin Oriental is a place of dreams-an exotic, perfectly functioning, memory inducing piece of heaven. If you cannot find it here, you will have great trouble finding it anywhere!

We arrived @ 1 am which allowed us the opportunity to experience their hospitality under less than ideal circumstances. After 20 plus hours of travel, it was simply golden to be greeted warmly, graciously, including fragrant flower "bracelets" and cool tea. Check in was a snap, room was lovely with river view. We stayed in deluxe king river view rooms on 6 th then the 8th floors. Great. Our stay was for three nights, then another 2 nights a week later after we returned from the north. They gladly held extra luggage for us so that we would not have to drag everything back and forth nor go over the restrictive intra-Thia airline weight limits. Nice touch. There was a plate of fresh fruit each day left for us to enjoy, each day a different sampling. There was a floor butler stationed by the elevators who called for the elevator, knew our names, greeted us sweetly each time. There was a button by the side of the bed to call the butler should there be anything we needed. The lobby was awash in jasmine, lotus, all manner of orchids and tropical flowers in stunning arrangement. The lobby was infinitely usable, always had many people enjoying the space... cup of tea, a drink. In the evenings there was a string quartet playing there, so we would stop for a drink before heading off for dinner. The mandarin oriental also had a sense of history with the "author's lounge" complete with historical photo story and original design. We loved the idea of the hotel being split by the river...spa, workout gym, 2 restaurants on the other side of the river. Their boat ran seamlessly all day and evening back and forth, which gave you a feeling of expansiveness, space and adventure! Clever. Loved the gym, spa was amazing, ate in the Italian restaurant Chaio, Lord Jim's and across the river. Bkfst was riverside buffet and had just about anything one could conjure up around the globe. I am vegan gluten free which limited my choices somewhat but with all the fruits, nuts etc I was delighted and more than satisfied.
We live in a large urban area and travel often but this was our first to Asia. The heat and humidity, density of people/traffic etc was a factor, got our attention! Bangkok is a big, hot, steamy humid, bustling place, so to have this oasis of beauty, serenity was essential. I would highly recommend the Bangkok Oriental, worth every penny!

Room Tip: river view is fantastic, would get up to 6 th floor or higher.

We love this hotel! We have stayed at other hotels in Bangkok, but from the first moment we arrived at the Oriental, there was no other place we wanted to be. When we visit Bangkok, this is our destination hotel. From the moment you arrive, you are treated as an honoured guest. The rooms are beautiful and spacious and the bathrooms and robes are luxurious. The tropical fruit that is left in the room each day is a special treat. The hotel offers a limousine pick up from the airport, which is a nice way to start your stay.
We love breakfast on the terrace by the river and the restaurants are superb. Exotic cocktails in the early evenings are a must. We're back again in June and counting down the hours!
