“Lovely quality older hotel in central Bangkok”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 17, 2013

I have been staying in this hotel since the 1970s, and the high standards have always been maintained.

Took a Deluxe room this time - quite a huge room, nicely furnished, good a/c, nice bathroom, two good double beds, free in room safe. We arrived very early (0900 arrival at BKK airport), but the room was offered immediately on arrival at reception, with no question of extra charges for early check in. Check in was efficient and courteous.

Breakfast buffet (included) was quite superb. Good selection of hot and cold foods, tea and coffee service at the table. All eggs cooked freshly, and as soon as a queue began, another chef arrived to assist. Kitchen staff frequently checked buffet contents.

MRT underground station at back of hotel no more that 200 meter walk.

We stayed here while on a tour with Grand Circle Travel. There is a geocache close by if you are interested. Foodland is the place to buy food items and beer. The hotel is situated downtown in Bangkok and the train station (overhead train) is not too far away. Hotel is very nice as far as I was concerned. Staff was friendly. Breakfast was FANTASTIC! Bar was nice. Singer in the entrance way in the evenings.

What a tired, worn hotel! The location in downtown Bangkok is great and i enjoyed doing laps in the pool but the hotel is in desperate need of a facelift. When I went to shower the knob to redirect water flow to the shower came out completely. That said, I informed the front desk after my bath and then went to dinner. By the time I returned the shower had been fixed. Thus, the hotel is very responsive, but I always felt I was staying in a 3-star hotel that had pretensions of being a 5-star hotel (It's rated as a 4-star.). Room and bed were comfortable enough, though, so if location is the most important criteria, I'd perhaps stay there again.

We booked this hotel with Agoda (with whom we have no problem)for two rooms for four people.

When we arrived at the hotel, we went to reception where we were kept waiting for about 30 minutes, finally the manager came and told us we would have to pay an extra 1100 baht more per couple, for two people to be in the room. Our voucher clearly stated maximum 2 persons per room and he said he was fed up with Agoda that he had a lot of problems in the past with this company. The price for the room was supposed to be one person per room and extra person should be charged this 1100 baht.

My wife and I have travelled a lot and have never been spoken to the way this manager spoke to us. We duly paid the 1100 baht per couple and went to our rooms.

When we got to our room we found it to be very dated and in need of a refurbishment. The plug in the bathroom did not work, there were no tea making facilities and we were kept awake all night by the traffic crossing the bridge outside our window as the window did not fasten properly to eliminate the noise.

We went out for the evening and on our return requested our keys for the room, no indentification was asked for and our friends who were in the next room were given somebody else's key so much for security.

We go to Thailand two and three times a year and have never experienced anything like this hotel and certainly we will not be going back .

Room Tip: Check tripadvisor first before booking

We stayed at the Montien twice over a couple of weeks in October abd November this year.
Overall it is a nice hotel, fairly clean and the majority of staff are great. The morning shift door man is especially great and is the best asset this hotel has.
The rooms were clean and functional but in desperate need of a freshen up. The green carpet in my room on our second visit is dreadful. Not bad enough for me to complain, just not nice.
The breakfast at the hotel is pretty good, although the available food starts to drop very noticeably as closing time gets to within an hour.
My biggest gripe with this hotel is the check in system. As I stated we stayed here twice and on both occasions the check in procedure was DREADFUL!! The first time it took about 40 minutes, the second time it was 1 hour. Im sorry but nowhere is that acceptable.
The hotel really needs to do something about this as it really lets you down.
It is enough that I would think twice about staying there again.
The location however is excellent, just across the road from Patpong night markets and about 10 minutes tuktuk to MBK.
Overall a nice hotel, just please fix the check in procedure.

My first time & last time that I will stay in this hotel. I usualy stay in tha Tawana or Furama hotels in the Silom area, but they were fully booked so thought I would give the Montien a go

From the time I arrived at the checkin counter, things went down hill, the staff are far from friendly and courteous, apart from the door man, he was a friendly helpful guy. On opening my door I noticed that it was a smoking room, asked to get moved but no response. insects every day going about the room, spiders webs in the corners, disgusting hotel compared to where I would usualy stay at, the Tawana Hotel is an old hotel as well, but it is kept sparkling clean compared to this mess. Never again

Room Tip: Furama Hotel or Tawana Hotel far better and cheaper hotels instead of this flee pit

The Montien Bangkok hotel is situated in Surawong Road directly opposite the adult entertainment area of Patpong. It is within walking distance of stations on the Skytrain and Metro rail networks making it convenient to reach the tourist attractions of Bangkok without having to negotiate the busy roads.
There are` several excellent restaurants within walking distance and numerous bars and massage parlours nearby. Although the hotel is at the centre of one of the adult entertainment areas in Bangkok with a night market there is no noise in the room and the area is well policed at night making it safe for even the inebriated. The hotel has its own security which ensures guests a safe stay.
Although the hotel is several decades old the hotel is well maintained with the rooms being modern, well furnished and spotlessly clean. My room was much larger than the rooms found in more recently built hotels and contained a work desk, flat screen TV, mini bar, a large bed and still had enough room to swing the proverbial cat.
The mini bar was well stocked. As an example of prices a 250 ml can of Est Cola costs Baht 115, a 330ml bottle of Singha Beer was Baht 170, a 330ml bottle of Heineken beer was Baht 190 and a 20 cl bottle of standard Whisky was Baht 520. 2 bottles of complimentary water were provided but if taken from the room a charge was made.
The bathroom had a shower over a bath tub with a wide range of toiletry items provided such as shampoo and a bath gel, 2 cakes of soap, shower caps, a sachet of detergent, a nail care kit, cotton buds and a sewing kit. 2 robes and two pairs of slippers were provided.
The hotel has a swimming pool and fitness centre for the use by guests.
Breakfast, served buffet style, was perfectly adequate with a wide variety of items. A word of caution however if guests are to take breakfast at the hotel ensure it is included in the room rate as a charge in excess of Baht 600 is made for a walk in guest.
The check in procedure at 5.30 pm was efficient with little delay even though many guests were checking in at the time. The receptionist check in staff was efficient and courteous and projected a good image of the hotel. Staff at the hotel is well groomed, friendly and make one feel really welcome.
The Montien Hotel Bangkok is an excellent hotel and continues to be so having stood the test of time. I would have no hesitation in staying at this hotel again whether on business or for pleasure.
Just words of caution, when making your booking for the Montien Bangkok ensure you have the correct hotel. There is another Montien hotel in Bangkok, the Montien Riverside hotel.
