“Amari Watergate is Simply the Best”
Reviewed May 26, 2009

My husband and I recently returned from Bangkok after staying at the Amari Watergate for two weeks.

We have been holidaying there for the past few years and stay at the Amari Watergate twice a year.

We continually discuss going elsewhere in the world but finally end up at the Amari Watergate. It is like our second home.

Having had the privilege of living in most parts of the world and staying at some of the world’s most luxurious hotels, in my view the Amari Watergate is hard to beat.

We feel as though we could be anywhere in the world as the hotel provides us with everything we desire with no need to venture out except for the shopping.

The location is perfect and is close to the many shopping areas and markets.

The Management and Staff are just wonderful and always willing to go that extra mile to make sure you’re enjoying your stay.

Accommodation-wise we stay in one of their luxurious guest rooms which are kept in perfect condition with a housemaid constantly on hand.

There is a choice of eight restaurants and bars with great dining options.

We especially enjoy the Lobby Lounge for total relaxation with the excellent service from the Lobby Lounge Attendants. We like eating Fisherman’s Basket which the Lobby Lounge Attendants get delivered to us from Henry J Bean’s Bar & Grill which is located within the hotel. Absolutely yummy and nice to eat in a relaxing atmosphere.

A special mention must go to Grappino Restaurant which is Italian cuisine at its best.

Chef Giovanni is very obliging and only too happy to accommodate you with your favourite Italian dishes. We rave about the Chef’s Pasta Degustation dish and Seafood Risotto.

We love the sport and recreation centre featuring a large swimming pool with a garden terrace. For families with children there is also a smaller swimming pool.

Also the Fitness centre with squash courts, gymnasium, cardio vascular room and saunas.

It’s wonderful to indulge in Sivara Spa’s facial and body treatments and the unisex hair and nail spa with a variety of treatments from haircuts to waxing and shaving, as well as manicure and pedicure treatments. All in a very calming atmosphere.

We love you Amari Watergate and can’t wait to see you all at Christmas.

During our stay in Bangkok in April 2008 - we had just come back from Kuala Lumpur - see our reviews in our profile! - we had a pleasant birthday lunch here in Bangkok at the famous Amari Watergate Hotel ( 5 stars ) in the Promenade Restaurant. We stayed at the stylish Le Fenix Hotel Sukhumvit ( an Accor managed property - see our reviews in our profile! ). We had taken a taxi from our hotel, the Le Fenix, to the famous Bayoke 2 Tower, which we had visited and enjoyed the views from the 84th floor over Bangkok before our stroll from there to the Amari Watergate Hotel Bangkok. We walked along busy streets with many traders and people, it was simply fascinating in it' s own style and terms to see this, always in the knowledge one of us - him - had birthday today on the 19. 04. 2008, his 30th! We picked together the Promenade Restaurant of the hotel after we informed us on their website, which quite appealed to us. Cheers to that, Folks! Remarkable good choice! Before we had even entered the mamooth lobby of the hotel we had already our photo taken from one of the employees before the Henry Beans Restaurant of the hotel. The lobby is stunning to behold befitting the flagship of the thai - Amari Hotel Group! After exploring the hotel and lobby a bit we made our way up with the escalator to the Promenade Restaurant where friendly staff had already smiles waiting for us. We started the Birthday lunch at exact 14:02 PM in the afternoon and were almost alone in the restaurant with a view over the whole lobby below and other restaurants incl. the chinese one above which had been busier. We also saw murals of the King of Thailand. The Restaurant in itself was an elegant mix of black and creme and mixed western with traditional thai elements and superb service which was always smiling. Now we move over to the real stars of the show, THE FOOD, Folks! We ordered as follows incl. 1 Tangerine juice ( refreshing medium sweet ), 1 Whisky Sour ( judged perfect by her ), 1 Kahlua ( for the lovely birthday boy! ), 1 Watermelon juice ( absolute refreshing for him, too! ), he had a superb french onion soup, she enjoyed smoked salmon - judged once again excellent!, he enjoyed one portion of pork medallions with vegetables and potato cakes - the whole meal was fantastic - only the potato cakes were somewhat to dry!, she enjoyed as her main-meal a japanese style marinated seabass which was also judged unbelievable good by her!, - can I hear that we want more? Yes we DO! - afterwards our main-meals we enjoyed the following here in Bangkok at the very nice and relaxing Promenade incl. 1 Ginger ale ( for the birthday boy - very refreshing once again! ), 1 Cafe Napoli for her ( which was more than coffee - beautiful decorated - judged by her as wonderful and a great full flavour and strong as well - Was the birthday boy also strong? ), we also shared one dessert of raspberry which incl. raspberry selection, cream and brulee of raspberry which was once again as all meals beautiful presented and accompanied by very nice and professional service. We had for lunch around 2 to 2.5 h here which we were very glad to enjoy in this atmosphere of peace in the heart of Bangkok. The Bill incl. VAT and Service Charge was a reasonable 3.307.37 Thai Baht which was around at the time 75 to 80 Euros or 100 to 120 US Dollars! Some would say for Bangkok this amount seems high, but after our experience of the wonderful hotel and the staff, service and beautiful food and presentation and it was HIS 30th birthday and a beautiful day for her too, the bill seems very good and splendid indeed! After our lunch we strolled peacefully on the busy side walks of Bangkok incl. Erawan shrine, Central World shopping and we also saw crafty football players at work at a so-called Rexona sponsored shoot a goal challenge! Could we have seen the next Beckham born in Bangkok? So Folks! Thanks for reading our review of our Birthday lunch on a very warm and another sunny day in Bangkok, maybe you will now book fast your tickets and eat also here at the Promenade Restaurant in the Amari Watergate Hotel in beautiful Bangkok! Do not forget to FLY! STAY! EXPLORE! MORE! WITH LOVE FROM DUBLIN TO BANGKOK AND THE WORLD! By the way only one day later on the 20th of April 2008 we had lunch at the Verandah Restaurant in the Oriental Hotel Bangkok - now Mandarin Oriental Hotel Bangkok - see our profile for the full review about this stunner too!

My wife and i stayed here for the first 3 days of our honeymoon, before heading off to Koh Samui. I dont doubt there are more luxurious hotels in Bangkok but i think the Amari is perfect for people wanting a nice hotel for a few days visit to this fabulous and hectic city.

The hotel rooms are very nice, modern and good facilities. The hotel staff were very attentive and the hotel offers a good selection of bars and restuarants. The pool and health club are great, especially good for chilling out after a long flight. We arrived at 8am, got an early check in, then spent a day by the pool, getting used to the heat and catching up on some rest.

The hotel is well situated near the main shopping centres and Pratunam market. Meter taxis are always available from the main entrance and we paid no more than 100 baht to get to any where in the city.

On a short break to a city like Bangkok we dont tend to spend a lot of time in the hotel, prefering to cramin as much activity as we can. For like minded individuals, this hotel provides everything you could need and more.

During my stay the service was excellent, they were always friendly and ready to help with anything. The food was very good especially the Italian restaurant and the breakfast. The chef made an effort to even come and say hello.
Room service made sure to always clean on time, the rooms were very neat and spacious and the bed was very comfortable.

We booked our stay for 5 nights. The check in process was OK and luggage promptly delivered to the room.

The room feels cramped and crowded because of the way it is set up. The bathroom level is a few inches lower so you are taken by surprise with the sudden drop in walking level. Again while coming out of the bathroom, you have to be careful not to bang your feet due to the uneven flooring.

The main door of the room had a defective door opening mechanism and just slammed itself shut instead of locking gently. Similarly, the bathroom door was too lose and just slammed itself.

The wood work behind the main bed (bed frame) is highli accident prone. If you are not careful you could hurt your head very badly. Most hotels have soft bed frames but beware at AMARI WATERGATE.

The room service food is of poor quality but well presented. We ordered pasta (which was served cold and without salt) and salad was served with stale greens. The hotel is expensive for its room service, mini bar and the hotel Spa is exhorbitant and probably costs more than the nightly rate of the hotel. Its probably a lot more convenient to walk to a 7 Eleven next to the hotel to bring essentials.

The breakfast experience was MOST DISAPPOINTING. The staff in the breakfast area on the 4th floor are impolite and grumpy faced every morning.

We ended up being greatly inconvenienced as they had a huge conference group staying the same time as us. The group literally flooded the breakfast area and items would not be replenished by the hotel staff, huge clues, unhygenic conditions caused by non replacement of service cutlery etc just made the entire experience disgusting.

On the last day, we did not even eat breakfast even though we had included it in our room rate.

When I brought this problem to the attention of the restaurant manager (a bald English guy with an accent) he simply told me, 'BUSINESS IS BUSINESS, and WE ARE A CONVENTION HOTEL." If we could not handle the crowd, we should pay for room service and order breakfast in the room or we should wake up very early and come down for breakfast before the convention groups came in.

I thought this was the most inappropriate answer and uncaring way to treat a hotel guest staying there for 5 nights on holiday.

The hotel elevator doors do not have automatic sensors. We were with a baby and twice the pram got stuck between the elevator doors as they shut too quickly after opening. The slope at the reception to facilitate wheelchair, trolley and pram movement is too inclined and slippery. I almost fell down while trying to manouvre by baby's pram.

The tea cups and glasses were not cleaned by house keeping on 3 out of the 5 nights that we stayed at Amari Watergate.

Overall, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Mainly because of the various areas of concern listed above and for poor receptiveness to guests concerns.

If you are on holiday, STAY AWAY FROM AMARI WATERGATE! They are very commercial!

  • Liked — Maybe the location.
  • Disliked — The poor attitude, the bad food and service, the unsafe conditions in the elevator, lobby and uneven room and bathroom floor levels.
