“This is where I go to get away”
Reviewed January 15, 2011

See my recent review of the Renaissance Ratchaprasong. That and the JW are great hotels. I live at the beach and stay in hotels 100+ nights per year, almost entirely for business. The JW in Bangkok is one of the places I go to get away and unwind. Thais are very nice. The staff is great and they have a great memory for people and their likes. The reviewer who said that the JW is older was right, though it does not seem old and worn. It does not feel like a brand new business hotel - and that's part of its charm. As much as I thought of the Renaissance's facilities, two things I think at the JW are much better - the Club/Executive Lounge (though I preferred the decor before they remodeled it - the reviewer who said it looks kind of generic is right, but the staff and food/services they offer is unsurpassed). The other is that the spa, fitness center and pool area feel more like a resort than a city hotel. And actually, one of the best menus and most reasonably priced restaurants is the juice bar in the spa. Bangkok is a big, crowded city with lots of traffic, great food and some of the best shopping and nightlife anywhere in the world. The JW is an oasis in that sea of excitement.

Stayed here for 5 days for business. The hotel was conveniently situated between two train stations so getting to wherever you need to go is easy. I would take the cab but they charge you extra if you're staying at the JW. That's what you get for staying at a pricey hotel
A supermaket and convenience stores are very close by so the essentials you need are there. I didn't find too many places for meals though except the pricey ones at the hotel.
The palce was comfortable and very cozy. Bangkok is meant to be explored anyway so I was only at the hotel to rest.
I would definitely suggest this hotel to anyone.

Unless you need to stay at a JW Marriott to impress someone (or yourself) try one of the other Marriott properties in Bangkok. The JW feels like a cruise ship that's been out to sea for too many years. The hallways are dim and slightly dank; the rooms (and mine was an executive floor room, at that) have outdated furniture and no comfortable place to work. The beds are fine - Marriott won't fail you there - but you won't want to spend more time in your room than you have to. and maybe that's a good thing: Bangkok is worth exploring.

Breakfast at the lounge was great and diverse - and the outdoor patio is a nice place to sit and sip of a cup of tea. But it felt impersonal, like someone had ordered the lounge from Marriott HQ and grafted it onto a building in need of more serious work.

Needless to say, I checked out early and moved to the Renaissance. I'm surprised other guests didn't follow me over. Their loss.

Booked the JW based on other TA reviews and we were very happy with the choice. Upgraded to an executive suite which let me be up watching tv at 2am thanks to the time change while the lucky wife slept in the other room. Executive lounge has a great breakfast and snacks throughout the day. Our room also included a Mercedes limo to/from the airport which was a nice touch. Easy Skytrain access, which we took to Chatchuka market on Sunday- incredible. Also did a temple/palace/city tour through Bangkok Private Tours which was great. The Thai restaurant in the hotel was very disappointing- definitely go out to eat. Good massage place in the adjacent shopping center- far cheaper than the hotel.

Top notch service. Excellent Executive Lounge that I have not seen exceeded in any of the over 60 hotels I have stayed in over the past five years. It is definitely worth choosing an option that gives you access to the lounge - which serves full meals for breakfast and dinner and has nice snacks available for lunch. The beer, wine and mixed drinks are included.
The rooms are fine, though you may need to adjust the air, which errs on the side of cool.
The pool and exercise facilities are fine and the concierge service is outstanding.
Overall, the best hotel I have stayed at in five years.

We stayed at the JW Marriott for a night before leaving for Pattaya the next morning. The hotel is an excellent one for business travellers. We decided to do some shopping in Bangkok and decided to go to SIAM Paragon in our van, which turned out to be a terrible mistake. We were stuck in traffic for like 2 hours and would have been better of walking to the mall. The good thing is that I found some nice shoes at the mall which has some good deals for almost everyone.

My advice if you want to go for shopping do it around noon otherwise laze around in their pool which is nice. Evening traffic can be harsh.

Looks to me like they havent spent any money on this property since I was here 4 or 5 yrs ago. The rooms have old, tired furniture and are kind of dark. The bathroom was not up to typical Marriott standards. I'd rate this place a B. Nice touch - Platinums get 3 items pressed overnight for free. Liked that. No nice gift shop, no place to buy a quick snack, no Starbucks in the lobby. Executive lounge is fantastic with very nice made to order breakfast but I couldnt get past the small, old, dingy rooms.
