Just returned from spending a week at Holiday Inn, Bangkok. Taxi ride from Airport cost us 340 B. For those first timers, it’s the floor below Arrivals – just follow the Taxi sign down the escalator ramp. Go Outside and join the Queue. There is a guy sitting, just give him the name of your hotel (if Hoilday Inn make sure you say Ploenchit near Chitlom, otherwise you might be whisked away to Silom location), he writes down the hotel name and hands you a piece of paper. A taxi driver will load up your luggage and you are on your way ! Trip was about 50 minutes ( mind you we reached during traffic time).
Holiday Inn is just adjacent to Hotel Inter Continental. The first impressions were good. The concierge were quick to take your bags and we were ushered towards the Check In counter. Check inn was quick and smooth and we were on our way to the room in less than 10 minutes. There was always staff waiting for to push the lifts for you. Someone in one of the previous reviews had an issue with how small the lifts were. Yes, they are smaller than usual sized lifts but it was not a problem. I am claustrophobic and I had no issues whatsoever. The room which was on the 6th floor, was clean, bright, though on the smallish side. That was not a issue as we literally just used to for sleeping at night ! Bath room was modern though the blinds and the glass partition was little too ‘chic’ for my taste. We have a cheeky 8 year old.
We had break fast at Café G. Great service and several stations certainly added variety to the day’s first meal. There was the usual egg station, Thai station, Indian station ( veg dishes), french toast & waffle corner with all the toppings, the noodles, congee. There of course, the bacon, baked beans, etc. Another dish I liked and don’t see too often in chain hotels - hommous and pita bread. Oh, you also had your assortment of breads, pastries and criossants. I am sure I forgot a few items but I think you get the pic. There is something for everyone.
There are another restaurant on the premises CHARM, which was a thai restaurant but we never visited so no comment. We did however, enjoy a lunch buffet at Café G. Price was very reasonable at 229 B. Though choices we limited, every item was fresh and delicious. You must try the coconut thai chicken soup. I am kickin’ myself for not going back for seconds …lol
The hotel has nice pool. It is small but that worked out for me as it was easier for me to watch over our kids. The setting is very nice though the Intercontinerntal does seem to loom over our heads. We ordered food at the pool which was tasty and quick. Service was great. Great Chicken wings
Now lets come to location. This is the best part. Our three previous visits to BKK were all hotels situated on Sukhumvit Road. This time we chose a hotel in Ploenchit and boy did we avail its location. We walked to Big C (walmart type store), Central World, Siam Paragon, and MBK. Only on one occasion did we take a tuk tuk back from MBK and it cost us 60 b. (Too many bags to carry…!). We watched movies at Central World (7th floor), ate at Sizzlers on the 6th floor.
The hotel has a booking service where we bought tickets to SIAM NIRAMIT show. A van picked up up, took us there and after the show dropped us back at the hotel. That’s another review.
By the way, there is a 24 hour Mickey D’s across the street – just go up the stairs, walk across the sky walk and walk down the stairs. It was great as our youngest son is not fond of exotic food and strictly lives by nuggets and fries. There is a good thai restarant called Amarin Foodhouse, 2nd floor to a building just close to the MacDonalds in Amarin. Cheap and tasty. They are open till 11:30 and even deliver to the hotel.
Overall, the Holiday Inn at Bangkok is a great hotel – two thumbs up for its great location and great service.
One last note, jist want to thank one of their Reservation sales agents Ms Manassanun, who was very helpful with all my queries when I was booking my hotel reservation.
