The Okura Prestige Bangkok
Ranked #6 of 887 Hotels in Bangkok
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 15, 2013

Okura Prestige Bangkok is the top line of the Okura brand and is her first step in Asia out of Japan. The hotel has set a high standard for luxurious hotel for her competitors in Bangkok. It successfully gives the feeling of being privileged from the entering to leaving.

Located close to the Phloen Chit BRT station, it is reasonably close to the tourist spots at Siam and Chit Lom while it is reasonably away from the crowds.

The hotel is situated on the top floors of a composite office building. On ground floor, there is a subtle reception lobby where the bell boys greet the guests with warm smile and bow (a Japanese touch). The hotel lobby is on 24th floor which also houses the all-day dining restaurant and the Japanese restaurant, Yamazato. With a view to the city through the slanting curtain wall and high headroom, the lobby is spacious. A grand staircase leads up to the 25th floor where the amenities are housed. Check-in process is quick and a beautiful lady led us to the room and explained the facilities with good English.

The room is not big in Bangkok standard, but the design details is very attentive and nicely done. Beddings and toiletries are of very good quality. Water closet is standing alone from the bathroom which is a typical Japanese layout. The WC is equipped with heated seat, funny water jet and warm air that make the process a fun. Yet, the basin in the WC cubicle is too small. With sliding doors, the bathroom and walk-in closet can be hidden. The bar hub is well-equipped. One smart detail is the water heater which can be pulled out that it is not necessary to deal with the troublesome power cable. Lighting and temperature can be controlled with the touch screen panel. It is easy to use and the preset lighting modes are convenient.

A complimentary high tea set goes with a stay of two nights or above. It was very delicious and I love the pastries and dessert vey much. The sun shine on a winter afternoon plus the open view at the balcony are nice compliment to the nice food. Breakfast is served in either the all-day dining restaurant (up & above) or the Japanese restaurant (Yamazato). At up & above, the food is good in quality and quantity. Egg menu is offered and the egg Benedict is yummy. One comment to mention is that the table services should be trained up further: my table was cleared up twice while i was picking food at the buffet counters. Although the waiters had quickly set up the table for me again, it would not be a nice experience. Contrary to this, the breakfast menu at Yamazato is fixed with only choice of rice or porridge. The patronage is much lower, I was one of the five guests that morning. The food is good, but frankly, it is more of a Japanese experience which I would not try twice, although I was reminded by a friend in advance.

The pool receives the most comments in this site. It has all the basic gimmicks like comfortable sun beds (although just a very few), infinity edge and nice open view. But it has a fatal disposition that it is shaded most of the day and most of the year. Maybe this explains why the pool is always empty!! The fitness centre, just next to the pool, is well equipped and opens 24 hours.

All in all, the hotel worths a stay for its luxury, but may not be a good choice to return considering its price.

Dear yhpian,
Thank you for choosing The Okura Prestige during your recent trip to Bangkok and we appreciate sharing such detailed description of our hotel on this platform. I am delighted that you enjoyed the convenience of staying in our central location and also that our staff had such a positive role in your overall experience.
We do regret that our pool, which received several comments lately, is indeed in the shade for 2 months in the year during the height of the winter solstice. The reverse side of the 'coin' is that we will have sun exposure from sunrise to sunset in the summer months. Thank you once again for your review and it would be our greatest pleasure to welcome you back.
With very best regards

We visited Bangkok quite often and always endeavour to try new hotels, just to have different experiences. We stayed in the Okura Prestiage from 8th to 11th January 2013 and this gave us surprising satisfaction, Good location, excellent services, friendly staff, comfortable room. The swimming pool and the lounge is a must. The breakfast is substantial with choices beyond our expectation. Staff are helpful and friendly plus knowledgable.

Visited Bangkok with family over New year 2012/2013 and stayed in the Okura Prestige. Fast and thoughtful reservation confirmation together with location map and even a text in Thai and English language for any local driver "Please bring me to the Bangkok Okura which is in.....".
Cool interior, minimalist design like often used in Japanese styling, but with Thai design touches.
plush sofas and seating in the lobby, in the bar and especially superb on the terrace on 24th floor, with a view on Bangkok's skyline. Japanese kites and other nice decorations give a nice accent.
Breakfast buffet was a very good selection of Thai , Japanese, Asian and Continental food, my wife especially liked the fruits. Mangos and Bananas in Thai are REALLY good and here you can have them all . For me, the Coffee was really good, which is not always so even in good hotels, and my favorite was the "Egg Benedict".
I heard that they even have their own bakery to make french bread and sweets.

The hotel has a roomy gym with the latest equipment, a SPA and best of all, an outside pool on the 25th floor, that overlooks Bangkok, similar to the one of the Marina Bay sands in Singapore. After shopping in the city at 36 degrees Celcius, the pool is a good place to cool down and play with the kids.

All in all, I think that the Okura combines the best of Thai and Japanese caretaking for adults and kids, central location, style and atmosphere, a real experience that I will use again when I am in Bangkok.

Spent 3 nights in Club Level Room between Christmas & New Year. Room itself was very nice although bathroom design not great in as much as there was only one washbasin and no mirror over it ! This meant that to shave I had to keep moving away from the sink to see what I was doing in the mirror. Seperate WC room with highly entertaining Japanese bottom washing system - warm jets of water followed by hot air around the nether regions (I'd actually go back just for this :)) The big downside of this hotel, at least for the leisure traveller, is the pool area which is, simply, hopeless. It offers no more than a dozen sunbeds (this is a big hotel) and gets absolutely no sun (maybe explains the lack of sunbeds). It's in permanent shade. We actually ate out each evening so difficult to comment on food, although breakfast was okay - not amazing. We did however have the best Berries Martini ever in the bar (that's quite a compliment as we live in London and have frequented many great bars). Staff were very warm and friendly as you'd expect in upmarket property in Bangkok but, to be honest, we wouldn't return.

Dear New2Jersey,
Thank you very much for your recent review of The Okura Prestige Bangkok. As our Hotel has only been in operation since a little over 8 months, it is certainly rewarding to receive our customers feedback as this certainly advocates us to continually strive for even better services and facilities.
I also thank you for the feedback regarding the shade on our pool deck. Cantilevered on the 25th floor, the hotel's 25-metre swimming pool is indeed a stunning architectural feature and it is a perfect spot to swim, relax or simply enjoy the view over Bangkok's skyline after a busy day of shopping. As the pool faces north, we are blessed with up to 11 hours sun exposure and warm water from March to October, however at the height of the winter solstice our pool is indeed in the shade with very little direct sunshine from late November to early February. You also mentioned the lack of sunbeds and we can already confirm that we have placed an order for additional furniture to be in place very soon. We would be more than thrilled to welcome you back if this was the main reason you mentioned you may not return. Our Hotel is constantly changing and you will certainly not be disappointed with our outlets which remain to be discovered.
On behalf of our 400 associates here at The Okura Prestige Bangkok we would like to thank you for your business and DO hope to see you again when your travels bring you back to the area!

Sincerely,

Samir R. Wildemann

Although still very new since opening less than a year ago, this hotel is definitely a top choice for me when I return next. Excellent location right next to the BTS and a 5 min walk to Central Chitlom, it's central enough but just far away enough to find alternative routes away from that horrendous traffic nightmare of a junction (4-face Buddha Temple/Central Plaza/Gaysorn) to find alternative routes. Rooms are splendid and spacious with all the amenities one would need. Beds are extremely comfortable, climate control spot on and bathroom (semi open) very functional and well thought out. The gym and spa facilities are very good but unfortunately the pool was experiencing 'arctic-like' conditions this time of year when it does not get any sun. Stabbed a toe in and bid a hasty retreat! But what a view from this awesome infinity pool!

The breakfast buffet spread was generous and food excellent. Table service could use a little more training but they were courteous, friendly and always ready to serve which I cannot fault. The outdoor tables are a wonderful place to catch the sunset with a cocktail (or two!), a rarity in BKK. Check-in/out was trouble free and front desk staff polite and attentive. Senior staff who seem to pop up everywhere are always quick to greet you and chat if you wish and this is a nice personal touch that I appreciate very much.

All in all, a wonderful stay at the Okura Prestige!!! Don't miss this one!

Truely a five star among the typical failed attempts in developing countries. Rooms and facilities are fantastic. Never asked what was with the pool, may have been a feature, but the water was extremely cold which seemed odd in such a warm climate.

Right next to the train, takes 45 minutes to / from the airport. Bell boys are very informative and will generally point you in the right direction.

Top quality technology, furnishings, toiletries and bedding.

The beautiful Okura Prestige is a hotel that lives up to Asia's reputation for first class hotels & a service level above anywhere else in the world. From the moment we were picked up from the airport in a brand new Mercedes with massaging and cooled seats, to quick and easy check in through to check out, it was flawless. The roof top infinity pool is great along with the huge, very well equipped gym. We had access to the Club lounge which is very well appointed where we had a very tasty breakfast every day. Every staff member we came across offered fantastic service and attitude. The room was a good size with a great layout, very clean, very comfortable bed and pillows, fantastic shower with great water pressure. Also, it's in a great location, right next to the BTS and only a stop or two away from shopping at Siam Paragon and Central World malls. I think the little details make a difference such as the yummy snacks they delivered to our room right after check in and filling our ice bucket every evening at turn down service. I'm pretty picky but I truly can not find fault with the Okura Prestige & definitely would choose an Okura hotel in the future.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the Okura Club rooms which are located on the highest floors & gives access...
