“The Ship has been sunk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

Sadly, this Soi 23 institution has been forced to close for reasons that are unclear at time of writing, but probably related to transfers of subtenant leases. Who knows?

This was a great little pub for those in the know, with homestyle cooking at affordable prices, friendly staff, and a quiet, cozy atmosphere. A proper ‘local’.

Another sad day for Sukhumvit Soi 23, as it slides ever deeper into the mire in search of the mighty Yen/Won/Yuan/Dollar.

“I'm Always eating here!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013 via mobile

Honestly I can not even count the number of times I have eaten here! Everytime I return to Bangkok this place is the first that pops into my mind when I get hungry.

The pub is traditional, cozy and inviting. It's been built and designed so well that it looks like everything was brought over from the UK! They have a dart board, good music. It's also got a huge TV and great sound system so if you're into any sports this is the best place to watch your game with your beer, a good meal in peace. The pub serves Thai and proper British food. It's hard to find places in Thailand that severs real British food which is why I love this place so much.

Great Food, Great Atmospher, Highly Recommend!

“Was blown away by the panang”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

Arrived here out of desperation because other restos in the area were already closed for the night. Shockingly, the best panaeng curry we had in two weeks was found at this "British" pub! Both meals we had were super spicy and very tasty. Don't hesitate to order the local dishes here. But don't expect attentive service. Servers might take some time to get to you, in between playing video games on their iPhone or playing with their kids. It's by no means fine dining, but it somehow ended up being perhaps my second-favourite meal in Bangkok.

“A Quiet Pocket of Sanity Around the Corner from Soi Cowboy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

The Ship Inn is a small restaurant on Soi 23, around the corner from the infamous Soi Cowboy.

The food is simple, but good. I recommend the soups. The ham and pea is very nice.

Beef stew is lovely, and the sandwiches, while not inspired, are safe and good to pair with a bowl of soup. A soup and sandwich here makes a nice little meal.

Bangers and mash is great, as are the meat pies. I endorse pretty much everything on the menu, with the exception of the filet and pepper steak. If you are looking for a good steak, you need to go to the Landmark Hotel, or to the Marriott. You will not find a great one for 350 baht at the Ship Inn.

If you like mushy peas, they have them.

The Ship Inn benefits from its location, and it suffers from it. If you happen to be engaging in forensic anthropology studies on Soi Cowboy, it is a nice refuge from the madness. If you are looking for a nice spot to take a nice girl, it is perhaps too close to one of the notorious districts of Bangkok. You go to Ship Inn because you happen to be in the neighborhood. Not because it is a magnet, luring you there with spectacular food. The food is competent. It is not spectacular. And remember: it is small. "Cosy" would be accurate.

Hope that this helps. Enjoy.

“Great Schnitzel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2012

Very weird thing to be writing about schnitzel in a restaurant located in Bangkok. So in the spirit of transparency I note I was taken to the Ship Inn by a friend who knows one of the owners. That out of the way.

It is a funny little place, very cozy although a little dark, with a great high areas with only two or three tables over looking the band area. The food is of very good quality and my favourite by far is the Schnitzel with brown sauce. It is close to the best I've tasted in Asia for many years (only matched by Broitzeit in Singapore).

If it is a cozy out of the way place you want to go for dinner and have a change from all the great Thai food available everywhere then this is definitely a good option if you're anywhere close by. Prices are reasonable, good wine list, staff are very friendly and if you stay a bit later the band is pretty good. Starts getting a little busy after 10:30 and the crowd starts to change from diners to a little more of a late night bar hopping crowd, although never really gets too busy and always pleasant.
