Reasonably priced, with regular trains to downtown, this is the best was to avoid the traffic. From the end station, it is easy to connect to the BTS to get to most places in the city.

The airport link is designed to make Bangkok tourist happy. I took the MRT from my hotel to Petchaburi then transferred to Makkasan for the express line to suvarnabhumi airport. There is now a new walkway/skybridge for tourist to take from Petchaburi to Makassan so no more walking on the street and crossing the dangerous highway. There is even a lift for passengers with huge bags. Fare for express line is 90 baht. Its quite confusing first but if you ask people they will help you and direct you towards the right ticket counter and and were to go next.

If you try taking a taxi from Suvarnabhumi into the city it will easily cost you in the range of ฿400-฿500. However, when you land at the airport you can get right in the train station located inside the airport, pay ฿45, and get into the city a little while later. The Airport Rail Link connects to the SkyTrain at the Phayathai station, and the SkyTrain can get you around to a lot of Bangkok. It's an incredibly easy system, and far cheaper than a taxi. I'd definitely recommend the train to anyone arriving at BKK.

Do be careful though, the night's last Airport Rail Link leaving the airport gets you to Phayathai after the SkyTrain has stopped running for the night. This means you get deposited at the Phayathai station with no onward train travel, and there are throngs of taxi drivers there ready to take advantage of your travel-wearied state. As anywhere in Bangkok, always demand that a taxi driver uses the meter; if the driver tells you the meter is broken, or tries to negotiate a rate beforehand, it means he's a shady person. Your best bet is to talk away from the station to Phayathai Road and flag down one of the taxis driving by rather than dealing with any of the taxis waiting to prey on people.

Airport rail link is a medium speed train that runs between the Airport and the city with limited number of stops. The train starts right under the Airport (you can take a lift down to reach here) and goes upto Phaya Thai station. Considering the Suvarnabhumi Airport is far from the city centre, this train is very useful for most tourists.

I was staying at Royal Ivory Nana Resort near Nana Sky Train Station. The taxi from our hotel to airport was costing around 700 Baht. I took the Skytrain from Nana Station to Phaya Thai Station for 40 Baht and then easily changed to the Airport Rail Link. The entire journey from Phaya Thai Station to Suvarnabhumi station costs 45 Baht and took 45 minutes. Totally I spent 95 Baht from the hotel to airport which would have otherwise cost me 700 Baht in a taxi. Having backpacks is much better when travelling in this train. Though I had one roller bag and it was fine.

The train is clean. Runs at a decent speed. The ticket machines are user friendly and very simple to use. If you are confused there is a guard to help you out.

If your hotel is close to any BTS station and if you believe in saving some money on travelling, take this airport rail link. If you are a big family the taxi and airport link cost would turn out to be similar.

The service is cheap for the city line though the frequency is a little too slow and trains tend to be packed by the 2nd station.
