“best and most unique hotel ever!”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

this has got to be one of THE BEST hotels i have ever been to. upon arrival, we were checked in easily and even upgraded in our room. then greeted with a refreshing thai drink. i love that there are 4 themes to all the rooms and the rooms are quite spacious as well as awesome full length windows overlooking bangkok. they hold almost daily a tea ceremony in the evening, which is like a welcoming reception to meet the staff with complimentary wine and small bites. the bed is super comfortable and the toiletries provided are beyond what i imagined, including a cute his and her box with shaving, tiger balm, crystal deodorant, etc. the bathtub is bigger than the one in my house! the floor manager Paul is divine to chat with. there also includes their elegant but contemporary restaurant Red Oven that was delicious, gorgeous outdoor pool that overlooks the city, spa, massage center, exercise room, and rooftop bar. for a high end corporate hotel, it did not feel corporate at all but a very much unique experience, which i value. i would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: ask for wood room or earth room theme, or just a tour of the rooms!

having been in bangkok many times, my taxi driver found the hotel very easily. the hotel is very centrally located over looking lumpini park. it is about a 10 minute leisurely walk down to saladaeng bts/ silom road shops. Upon entering one has to go upstairs to checkin. i checked in on the executive floor. i had a so comfy room, wood theme. the rooms are good size. bathroom has both bath and shower. the bed is superb- very comfortable to sleepin. i loved the apple mac system/free wifi. for breakfast i had it at the red oven restuarant. the resturant is superb, large spaced, good light, with staff cooking vaious dishes in front of you. excellent selection for breakfast from egggs bacon, hash browns, to cheeses, pastries, , breads, fruits, cereals meats, asian etc. i had access to the newly opened club milliseme. its very elegant with nice furniture, tvs- good selection of food to eat. a very quiet relaxing oasis. the staff there are very friendly. i like the various themes and colours throughout the hotel, contemporary architecture and modernist themes. special mention to kevin who works on floor 9 with title of- guru. understands guests needs and wonderful customer service. i shall take you up on dinner offer lol. . i can see that a lot of the early teething problems have been overcome, given the hotel has only been operating 6 months. its new, the themes all blend in and its an excellent place to stay in bangkok.

Room Tip: if you get a rom overlooking lumpini park- you wont be dissapoints- the view is fantastic.

I stayed in the So Suite (earth element) for two nights, and was expecting to change to a water element one on the third day. However, the only available one was found having water leakage problem, so the hotel offered a choice of a Spa Suite or a So Lofty (wood element), and the latter was picked for the third night.

The room quality varies very much. I averaged a mark of 4, but the earth element So Suite is 3, the water element So Suite is 4, the Spa Suite is 4 and the wood element So Lofty is 5.

The earth element So Suite, on 24/F, is big in figure (it is more than 900 s.f.) but not so big in term of spatial quality. The dark bluish decor may have a role to play. The room is divided into small compartments: a walk-in wardrobe, a small bar area, a big bathroom with a 4 ft diameter free standing bath tub, a long bedroom and an long internal corridor. These compartments give unbalanced and small mazy spaces. The bar area is small and dim, and not attractive to stay longer, hence is a waste of space. The bathroom is a bit oversized. The bedroom is long and narrow, has most of the windows but a bit empty. The wall finish is difficult to keep new as it is easy to leave scratches and finger prints on wall, and so it looks a bit dated even it is used only for a few months. The checker pattern marble floor in bathroom looks old fashioned too.

The wood element So Lofty, on 18/F, is of similar size as the above mentioned So Suite, but looks much bigger. The decor is simple but cozy. The wardrobe is incorporated with the bathroom, and space is efficiently planned. With a big living area and a bedroom, it still manage to squeeze in a decent guest toilet. The evenly distributed windows make both the living area and bedroom nice to stay.

I have chance to see the water element So Suite and Spa Suite.

The water element So Suite is on 25/F which is the only floor of water element opened so far. The decor is mainly marble. It looks grand but hard. There are separate en-suite bedroom, guest toilet and living area. The overall area seems smaller than the earth element So Suite (not suite about the actual figure). However, the room has a more comfortable ambience.

The Spa Suite is on 11/F where the So Spa is located. It is of similar design as the Spa, mainly with timber finishes and it gives a warm ambience. Since the suite is to facilitate guest to have seamless spa services within his own room, there is a en-suite spa treatment room and makes the room a bit crowded. However, it has the two Spa Suites have the only balcony in the hotel which is quite nice.

The public area is also designed according to the five elements. Amongst these, wood element is the most comfortable to me although I have not been to the metal element floor.

Notwithstanding the room layout and decor mentioned above, the free drink and snack in the  fridge, the coffee machine and the apple TV are nice gimmick.

The ground floor lobby can be accessed from Sathorn Road and Rama IV Road. Per many previous comments here, check-in floor is on 9/F. However, there are staff leading the way that one would not get lost nor unattended. Maybe the hotel has improved against previous comments.

The staff are all friendly and enthusiastic to help. They all wear a sweet smile and some can even greet me with my surname when I met them the second time. They always offer kind assistance and make me home.

Since I was staying in the So Suite, I can use the Signature Club on 25/F. Also, I can have complimentary tea buffet and happy hour there in the afternoon. The food and beverages, although free, are nice, and I find it worth the extra money spent.

Breakfast is served at the Red Oven on 7/F. The Red Oven is nicely decorated which stimulates my appetite. The selection of breakfast buffet is not very big according to Bangkok standard. However, the quality is above average.

The health centre is well equipped and allows me to burn my fat after big meals in Bangkok. The infinity pool overlooks the Lumpini Park, the same view as that from the hotel rooms. It is a pity that the weather was rainy that I could only enjoy a morning with sunshine. I didn't see the pool party and therefore didn't have the problem with drunk guests, if there is really any.

Last comment to make is the location. Although it is close to the Lumpini MRT Station, the MRT doesn't bring me to major attentions conveniently without interchanging to sky train. Alternatively, I walked to the closest Sala Daeng sky train station in 15 minutes. Being a new hotel, most of the taxi drivers don't know when it is. However, it is close to Bangkok's urban lung, the Lumpini Park, and it would be convenient and nice to have a walk there.

All in all, the hotel boosts a high standard for her competitors. Although I have stayed in more thirty Bangkok hotels before, and am still longing to try the new Okura and the to-be-comibg W, I surely have a drive to come back again.

Having traveled the world and stayed in so many hotels, this one ticks all the boxes. I stayed there 5th sept for a week and found it So So hard to leave. If Thailand is the land of smiles then the Sofitel So is the Capital. Returning each day from the heat and noise of BK to a hundred smiles from a hundred friends was great. They have realy nailed the friendly but corporate hospitality balance which is hard to find these days. The hotel has not long opened and I know the staff have had a challenge with the new construction needing some finishing off but I must say it all seems under control now as we had no major issues during my stay. Do your self a favor get out and see the real Bangkok (we did two tours with follow me bike tours) and recharge the batteries in comfort back at the hotel. We are So So comming back :)

We have been to many Sunday brunches in Bangkok and it is almost a ritual each week now. We decided to try the new Sofitel So, Red Oven Restaurant. The hotel itself looks amazing from the pictures with contemporary architecture and a modernist theme.

Our first impressions at Red Oven were very positive, we thought wow, this looks great and is steaming with character however, this was unfortunately the best part - the decor.

Remember we have been to many Brunches and pretty much they have all met or far exceeded our expectaions, however Red Oven, Sofitel So was a huge dissapointment.

We found all and I mean all the food to be very bland. For example the beef and chicken skewers were exactly that. A piece of beef or chicken on a skewer with no herbs, spices or vegetables they were very tasteless. The lamb was very tough and laden with fat and not enjoyable. I could give my opinion of every dish but I am sure you get the picture, it was just bland, tasteless and certainly not worth the 1,900 baht per person.

Desert was also very dissapointing - they looked great, however were far from spectacuar. Lava cake is meant to have chocolate oozing from the middle, however it was just a mere piece of sponge that was very overcooked and could not eat it (We had to order twice as they "lost" our original order" The Caramel Ice-Cream was a coffee insused ice-cream that was left untouched, upon raising this with the desert attendant they simply rolled their eyes stating that this is not true.

On the drinks side we had the choice of "red, white or sparkling" no Savignon Blanc, Riesling, Merlot - just red or white" this was very dissapointing.

Overall the food, drinks and service were lacking in all respects.

We were unfortunately seated next to the kids room and surrounded by screaming kids racing in and out.

It is such a shame as this hotel has such huge potential as the decor and ambience are top class.

I hope the hotel takes note of this - we will not be back unless we are assured of some change or feedback from management.

To top if off we thought we would grab a quick drink on the roof top bar next to the pool - this is a very nice area which spectacular views. After requesting for the bill we were overcharged by 100 baht and were informed that the menu is old and we have to pay their new price. We would not accept this and after a lot of hesitation they agreed - this is a 5 star hotel and this should normally not be a problem!

There are much better places in Bangkok like Four Seasons, Plaza Athenee Rain Hill or Grand Millenium.

Look forward to any response the hotel may have....

One would easily be impressed by the design of this hotel. The reception was very pleasant with welcome drinks. The room is equipped with Apple TV and Illy expresso machine. It would be helpful for the hotel staff to give a brief introduction of these facilities in the room as they are not the standard features in hotel rooms unfortunately this was not done. The park view rooms have a spectacular view of Lumpini park. There is something wrong with the design of the bathroom. Once you close the door to the bathroom, the guest in the bedroom will have no access to the entrance door. The door has two peculiar openings with unknown function at the bottom which one can easily crawl into the bathroom so there is absolutely no privacy. The bathroom also has only single basin and it is not easy to squeeze the bath gel out of the fancy bottle in the shower. We have adjoining rooms so we noticed the amenities in the rooms are not consistent.
We had a very disastrous experience on the first night of our stay. At around 12:45am while we were fast asleep, we heard a broadcast there was an emergency and we had to leave the building immediately without using the elevator. When I called up the reception to confirm the broadcast, he was unaware of it and seemed unconcerned. I asked him to check and revert but he didn't call back. When I called again he said there was an error in the system and there was no emergency. While I fully understand a new hotel has teething problems, the management should have at least the sense of risk management in place (like in this case to inform the guests immediately the system error). It happened we had an elderly in our party who was badly affected by the anxiety created by the mishap.
The setting for breakfast is beautiful but the selection of food was unimpressive by Bangkok 5-star hotel standard. The staff gave very little eye contact and their service is slow in general.
I am sure if the hotel can improve on the above problems, Sofitel SO can be a great place to stay your stay in Bangkok.

Room Tip: Request for a park view which I understand is not available for standard room type
