“A great city hotel”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

Really well situated in the Embassy district by Lumpini Park this hotel is understated but charming. The staff are incredibly well trained and never seem to forget a face. Facilities include a great gym, a large pool for a city hotel and a very nice couple of restaurants. We stayed twice during our time in Thailand and each time was excellent. Lovely rooms with loads of technology to keep you entertained.

Room Tip: Park view corner suite would be my tip but they all look great.

My husband and I just stayed there to celebrate our anniversary. The hotel was very new and nice, but there are still things needed to be improved. First, there was a concierge desk in the lobby, but I haven't seen anyone there throughout my 5 days stay. If I needed anything, then I would have to wait at the front desk which can took as long as 10 minutes. The other thing was the air conditioning in the room was to windy no matter how you adjusted it. Finally, I had to turn off the AC in our room, but kept the AC in the living room running while having the bedroom door open. Like other reviews have stated, the trasport is a real issue for this hotel. In our 5 days trip, we had taxi drivers not knowing where the hotel was in 3 days. It was a challenge to get back given it was our 2nd trip to Bangkok. I would recommend travllers to keep this in mind when choosing a hotel in Bangkok.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are nice with a great view.

Dear dazzlingdivatw,

Thank you for taking the time to share your anniversary experience with us. We are dismayed to learn that your recent experience with the concierge was unimpressive and we extend a sincere apology from our entire staff. This is very atypical feedback for us to receive - we are known for and take great pride in, our passionate staff and exceptional service and offerings. With that in mind, we take your comments with the utmost seriousness.

Our gratitude that you took the time to share your experience with us; we learn from each guest review how we can better ourselves and our guests’ experiences! We hope you may have the opportunity to return again to the Oriental Residence Bangkok – perhaps to celebrate once again next year!

Our best wishes to you both, now and always!

We booked this hotel after seeing it rated #1 on Trip Advisor and found it to be entirely worthy of the rank. What a beautiful hotel, with spacious modern rooms and sparkling clean. We only stayed one night but wish we were there longer. We paid roughly $175 for one night, which was a bargain for a hotel of this quality. The service was superb. The young Thai women who welcomed us to the hotel were professional and also beautiful and escorted us to our room and showed us how to use the facilities in the room (this should not be construed in any kind of sexual way). You will not be disappointed by a stay at this fabulous hotel.

The hotel is located in the embassy district of bangkok, so not too many shops or restaurants around the hotel areas. The hotel facilities are nice and well kept. The pool is nicely set up, gym is functional but small, the breakfast area (we included breakfasts in our room rates), was moved around 3 times when we were there, not sure why. It started out on the 3rd floor atrium area, then into a meeting room, then down to Cafe Claire on the first floor. Breakfast was basic, with limited choices. Terrible coffee, they use the wrong coffee ground for the type of plunger coffee maker they use

There aren't too many independent restaurants within walking distance from the hotel, Oriental Resi has 2 restaurants (one western the other chinese). There are restaurants in the Le Meridian down the block.

There is a shuttle from the hotel to the Chitlom sky train stop, 15 minutes walk from the hotel (5 minute car ride), every 30 minutes, they were supposed to run on the half hour, which for some reason doesn't really happened. The hotel management really need to fix this, we expressed our disappointment at the transports, but all we got was apologies and a sense that it's just the way it is. In addition, taxi is really difficult to get from the hotel, expect to wait 15-20 minutes in the morning. The taxis that leave from the hotel will run on meter, but outside, practically never.

This is not related to the hotel but will certainly dictate my future choices of hotel if I come back to Bangkok. The taxi issue made our stay in Bangkok very disappointing. Taxi is very difficult to get if you want them to run on meter, I was not successful to get one to run on meter (as suggested by the hotel and only go with those that run on meter). The general negotiated rate is probably at least 3x of meter is my rough estimates. Please note that I am not talking about a lot of money, may be you are overpaying $5USD more than on meter, but it's just another stress that you don't need. This is after running thru a line of scam artists at every tourist sites trying to tell us that the tourist sites are closed, but there is a better one down the road (which if you go, you will end up at some shops selling overpriced jewelry). So ignore all the "nice" Thai people that try to chat you up as you come out of your cab.

Dear MVagusta,

Thank you for your feedback. We have taken careful note of your comment. I do apologise for the inconvenience with taxi and traffic once again. Unfortunately, it is way of life here in Bangkok. Taxis in Bangkok are always an issue. They are far from professional. The other issue is the fare is already low so the drivers are always looking for ways to earn extra income by negotiate the fare rather than use the meter. Another issue is traffic, it is an ongoing issue here. We always advice our guests to take extra time due to traffic congestion everywhere in the city.

We take great pride in our staff and in the high level of service we provide and we are all hopeful that we will have an opportunity to host you again in the future. Thank you once again for your review.

Whilst a hike from the nearest sky train station (although they do run a shuttle every half hour), I cannot fault the Oriental Residence on any part of my two night stay.

The room was incredible, modern and comfortable, and the compliamentary upgrade from the basic room to a one bedroom suite definitely sealed the deal.

Service was impeccable, the concierge was never afraid to assist (giving me a tip for a fantastic local tailor) and PS - the beds are super comfortable.

Am eager to stay again!

Thank you for your review - there is no better compliment than one about our service. Together, we aim on a daily basis to ensure that our service is warm, personal and the very best it can be; we believe it is the thing that makes a hotel go from good to GREAT. Last night in Thailand was spent here. Hotel is beyond any words. I would classify this as a 6 star hotel and I've seen plenty of 5 star hotels.
Staff were amazing; nothing too much trouble.
Room was phenomenal. Great views over Bangkok from our room.
Breakfast in our room was delivered promptly and was excellent
Don't have enough good things to say about this hotel
Pool area was great
Used showers before we flew and they were spotless and exactly what we needed, Would stay here everytime we went to Bangkok.
Great location as well

The Oriental Residence is a fine hotel in a city of many fine hotels.

I have rated the hotel 4 out of 5 but in terms of star ranking the hotel is most certainly in a 5 star category.
I will touch on the few minor negatives that reduced the score before moving on to the many positives.
3 of us, men in our early 30's booked a 2 bedroom suite after 2 weeks in Vietnam for 3 nights over the New Years Period. Both the rooms had large beds however I requested a twin in one room. The Hotel couldn't organise a move to a sepearte 'inferior' room until the next day & there were lots of phone calling back & forth before eventually we used a roll away bed & it wasn't a huge deal as there was plenty of space & seperated us.
Also the speakers, ipods, lap tops to the big screens didnt work & we had helpers, IT & many other staff in & out of the room constantly beofre giving up. I know what you're thinking. First world problems huh? The techy connections never happened but they provide wires & plugs & all sorts of gizmos to wire things up so we were just trying to make use of the luxuries on hand.
I particulary feel a bit rude for choice of a better word when calling up the help to fuss over you & seemingly make a big deal over things that should just work..or at the very least be told what we're using is inadequate.
I'm not critiscing the staff who were well drilled & polite but when you want to get on with having showers & go out but feel you should wait around for things to get sorted it starts to get annoying.
We didnt have breakfast included & one of my friends had a meal in the breakfast cafe & upon
checkout it was the best part of $50. I never asked what he had but I hope it was good considering what I had to pay.

The last gripe was the decor. It was not to my personal tastes but everything was finished to the highest quality & standard. My problem was the non-asian flavour. Everything was soft greens & whites with an almost hamptons type feel. Slightly colonial & even subtly english some reviewers have mentioned. A little bit old fashioned were the taps & lampshades & with painted cane stlye table & chairs. I much prefer the asain luxury feel of somewhere like the Banyan Tree. I know I should have seen this in the pictures but I figured a place called the Oriental Residence would be a little bit more oriental!
Apart from those somewhat trivial & minor things the hotel was outstanding. The views from the 17th floor in every room were spectacular. Sunsets, skyscrapers was simply some of the best views I have ever seen. The suite was massive. Laundry even added.
The hotel staff were very helpful, personally excorting you to the room. Concierge booked dinner at Lord Jims. Taxi service efficient. Sky train shuttle luxury plus. The hotel price was very good, exceptional value for what you got. The same thing would be $2000 a night in New York.
Fruit bowl was tasty, full kitchen with everything you need. We had people around for a new years eve pre party & was a great base & even ordered some pizzas via the front desk delivered to the room.
The location & street would be some of the best in BKK on the embassy row & uniterrupted views due to the diplomatic residences bordering the property. The jags out the front look wonderful even if I didnt get a ride!

Overall a wonderful experience & deserving of a top 10 ranking.
