“One of the best for its price range on the Khao San Rd.”
Reviewed January 13, 2012

I've stayed here quite a few times over the years so I feel I should mention it. It's one of the best lower-middle range hotels if you want to stay on the Khao San Rd. - which is the safest place to stay in Bangkok. Excellent hotel if you come late at night for the first time by plane as it's easier to find than most since - and safer - as it's in the middle of the Khao San Road, The old address is Khao San Rd alley 126 , #1 which makes it easier to find.

Good: Right in the middle of the Khao San Rd. yet off the main road so quite quiet, safe hotel with no ripoffs, middle range of Khao San but still very cheap (I wish they would change the old price signs), very good air conditioners, straight forward reception compared to others on the Khoa sarn Rd, rooms are larger than others at the same price, some double rooms have more space than any others at the same price on the road, decent beds in the mid range of comfort, beds are much better than those at the same price in the area, clean, wifi available, computers available, right in the middle 24 food and night life, near very cheap travel agents, safest area for tourists in Bangkok.

Bad: Some rooms are nicer than others (So ask to see more than one room), careful about ones near the back alley as it can be noisy at night, Front desk is friendlier than most but the Khao San can be very tourist-tired, it's very basic hotel for those who like theirs a little nicer, it's a definate 1 star so it's not nicely furnished, wifi was expensive and not fast when I was there but they may have upgraded, down stairs computers sometimes have "issues" but many terminals near by, no washer/dryer service anymore, not perfectly quiet at night because it's still in the middle of the Khao San - but the air conditioner drowns this out.

Room Tip: Make sure you don't get one near the back alley

Stayed here as we arrived late evening with no reservation and after checking out a couple places along Kao San Rd, this seemed to be the best deal that was available at the time. However, after checking out other hotels the next day, we decided to upgrade to the Saluk Hotel. Still, Top Inn was a decent place and if it had wifi in the rooms we would have stayed. They did offer some computers with internet beside the front desk, but these seemed overpriced considering there was a restaurant beside that had free wifi. Room was pretty small, but very clean and modern. Bathroom was tiny but efficiently designed. Flat screen tv and AC was an added bonus. At 730Badht (roughly $25) it's not the cheapest nor the most expensive around Kao San, but if you want something clean and right off Kao San, then this is a decent choice. We've returned to Kao San multiple times since our stay and found Hotel Chiba to be the best option for $20.

We stayed at Top Inn Backpackers Hostel on Khao San Rd

Pros
- Khao San Rd is fun at night because it's busy & lively - nightlife is 2 mins away from the hostel. Not so fun in the day when it's hot, crowded, stall sellers leering, tourists acting as they would during the night.
- Close to all modes of transport e.g. taxis, buses, tuk tuks
- Good, strong air con

Cons
- Dirty dirty dirty rooms, beds, bathrooms
- Dirty breakfast - hairs all in the scrambled egg
- Must pay a lot extra for hot water and TV (not a big problem though)
- Must pay a huge bond that's more than the room (quite ridiculous for a backpackers hostel...)
- Expensive to use the net
- Unfriendly staff (but if persistent, they will give you some hints on how to get around - maybe they have a tough shell to deal with all the backpackers coming through)

It's okay to stay in if you want a cheap place and to be close to other backpackers - it's a real experience, unforgettable too.
