I stayed for 3 nights at Novotel Platinium which is located in the heart of the shopping belt of Pratunum. It is close to Central World & Zen (5 minutes walk), Pratunum wholesale area (5 minutes' walk), Big C supermarket (7 minutes' walk), Chidlom BTS (10-15 minutes' walk) and not to mention the famed Platinium Mall which is just downstairs! If shopping is your thing (high or mass fashion), then Novotel Platinium is it. The accessibility to the shopping is unparalled. However, it would be advisable to walk everywhere (malls or BTS station) if you decide on Novotel. The traffic around the area can be rather jammed and it is easier, faster to just walk. On the bright side, there's lots to see and experience around the area. Food stalls, bazaar stalls, fruit stalls and such. It is really a never ending of consumerism around the area. There's also cinemas around the area if one is tired of shopping. Massage places and eateries (e.g. Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, Swensen's, McDonald's, Black Canyon Coffee, crepes, Coco Bubble Tea) abound with easy access. For those who like tech stuff, Pantip Plaza is 3 - 4 blocks away (5 minutes' walk).
The room (deluxe) is good for 2 people and it is stylishly decorated in a modern, hip, boutique hotel feel. The setting makes one really feel welcome and at ease regardless of who goes there. Such is the charm and effortless feel that Novotel Platinium exudes. Beds are soft and comforting, best for snuggling up after a hard day of shopping! Toiletries might be lacking for some, however, one can always request. The room is clean, new and stylish. Though decorated with minimal furniture, the room feels welcoming and chic.
The staff at the hotel are very helpful with tips on hiring taxis (to airport) and honest with their answers to questions. The staff are also very friendly, cheerful and attentive to the guests' needs. It was a great experience in Novotel Platinium. It definitely would be one of my choice hotels if I go Bangkok again.

A very nice hotel (superior rooms) at a very good location in Bangkok. Would have given the hotel 5/5 if we hadn't been put in a taxi that tried to take 5 times the price. When we asked to simply use the meter, we where stopped at the nearest trainstation, the taxi driver said we where at the Makkasan station, but it was the station before Makkasan.

Its not the hotels responsibilty that the taxi driver tried to scam us, but they should make sure all taxis they order are serious (have the taxi driver license visible).

Reading some of the reviews I am either a very undemanding European, or people expect five star plus when only paying four star (and cheap at that). This hotel does just what you should expect it to do. The rooms are clean, tidy and have all the facilities you need for your stay (and mine was a week on business). Wifi is not only free for as many devices as you want, but it's also fast and reliable (too many hotels its either free or good). The staff are very attentive and rapidly get to know your likes for breakfast etc. The food is good and varied - the lunch buffet in particular.
The gym had good equipment and no crowds, the pool is adequate for exercise.
I was running a workshop for four days in the hotel, and the conferencing staff could not do enough - they were very responsive over the slightest item.
Regarding location - every conceivable shopping and food experience is within easy reach it is on the right side of town for the airport. Yes, it is a walk to the sky train, if you want to be next door to the train station then stay at the St Regis, Grand Hyatt or the Kempinski - and yes they are all five star and much more expensive.
