“just OK”
Reviewed February 9, 2013

We took this cruise back to Bangkok from Ayutthaya. Nice alternative to bus tour but nothing to write home about. Food is adequate as are the views.

“OK but pricey”
Reviewed February 7, 2013

With so many people, check in was a bit confusing. Nobody had told us, in fact, that we had to "check in" to get our seating allocation. There were 3 Grand Pearl cruises when we went and we ended up on the smallest. For the high price I had rather expected something better than a cheap buffet.

“Entertainment was very good and food was hot”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

We must have won the 'jackpot', particularly after reading other comments on this. We did the Dinner cruise on the 14th Jan. It was a great cruise. The entertainment was very good if a little karaoke. It was a Malaysian group. Dinner was substantial and nice a hot. It was all a little kitsch, but I find that is Eastern culture so just go with it

“Misleading advertising, poor service and safety concerns”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

We responded to internet advertising for the Grand Pearl Cruise which clearly stated that the cruise was to be of two hours duration as follows: Program : Check-in-Time :19.00 hrs. at River City Pier. Cruising Time : 19.30 hrs. - 21.30 hr. 19:30 - Departure from River City Pier. 21:30 - Arrive back at River City Pier. In fact departure was at 19:45 and arrival back at the pier was at precisely 21:25 meaning the cruise was 20 minutes less than the 2 hours we had paid for. We were placed at a table out on the open deck and assumed that the wait staff were informing patrons in an orderly fashion about when it was their turn to go to the buffet tables inside. Not so! When we finally became concerned about the lack of information and asked a waiter he didn't seem to know or understand so we went inside to find much of the food was already gone (certainly there were no sweets left). The 'hot' food was just warm and when taken on deck to our table in the wind it immediately became cold. We each ordered a glass of 'French' cabinet savignon which was revolting and of very poor quality. Finally, it was of considerable concern that there was no information given to passengers at any time that we heard out on deck about safety issues such as moving about on deck, what to do in an emergency, where life jackets are stored etc. - and this on such a busy waterway with huge unlit barges constantly moving down the river in the dark. All in all, poorly organised and mangaged with too much emphasis on silly gimicky things like staff lining up on deck like the navy and saluting as the boat docked. Better organisation and staff training would certainly address some of our criticisms and making sure patrons get their 2 hours worth if that is what is advertised! We were left feeling disappointed and misled.

“Cold / reheated food lead to violent stomach upset”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

Grand Pearl Cruises have taken over the previous quality excursion by coach and cruiser to Ayutthaya run by the Shanghri La Hotel in Bangkok. Unfortunately the return part of the excursion on the river is not in a modest sized cruiser as it was when the Shanghri La Hotel ran it, but in a large cruiser holding 4 or more coachloads of tourists. The food is tepid at best or reheated at worst - leading to the inevitable stomach upset. My wife was caught out (both ends at once if that's not too graphic) the next morning. At 40+ GB Pounds it was an expensive way to clear ones innards! Needless to say we will not be going again.
