I needed somewhere to stay in Bangkok that was clean, reasonably priced, well equipped and close to trains, so I decided to take a chance on SPB Paradise.
The hotel itself is a multi-storey building tucked away in a predominantly residential area, about 8 minutes' walk to the Sutthisan MRT station. It is still fairly new, is popular with Thais, and has Thai prices, rather than some of the inflated prices one sometimes comes across in more central parts of Bangkok.
I found the staff helpful and pleasant, and the hotel provided a golf buggy for guests to ferry them back and forth to the MRT station or the local shops. There was a slight mixup with my booking but staff quickly attended to this and fixed the problem.
Cleanliness was good, although the floor in the shower in my room was not entirely clean, especially in the corners. This is nothing unusual for Thailand, but hotel operators do need to learn that a bit of extra effort in this department will go a long way in terms of having a hotel presentable for a long time beyond its first few months of operation. Anyway I gave it a clean with one of the spare towels and it was fine after that!
For the money I'd paid on Agoda, I was prepared to expect a little less at this hotel, but I was really surprised as it was the best value hotel I'd been to in Bangkok thus far. It's certainly not a 5 star resort with a pool, but for the equivalent of about $24 I had a very spacious and modern room, tea/coffee making facilities, fridge, air conditioner, queen size bed, television with a very good selection of English and Thai channels, wardrobe, telephone, reasonably sized bathroom..... everything I needed basically. Some rooms were also equipped with an in-room safe, room 310 wasn't but room 210 was - go figure! Either way it was like a serviced apartment for half of what you'd expect to pay.
The location isn't ideal if you're looking for something that's walking distance to central Bangkok and all it has to offer, but there are still a couple of 7/11's within walking distance, the MRT is nearby, and you'll struggle to beat the value for money. Central World Rama 9 is only a few MRT stations away, and Huai Khwang with it's BBQ restaurants and markets is only one station away.
I'll be staying here again on my next trip to Bangkok.
