We've been to Bangkok many times but always doing the usual eat-shop-massage routine. So the canal tour was a great alternative and experience.
Tom is not only a good guide but a great host of his country. Before boarding the boat, Tom got me a coconut juice at the local market and bought a huge piece of watermelon to share with us on the boat. During the entire tour, he would give appropriate cultural and historical explanation, enough to keep us in the loop but not too much that it becomes a bore. While staying attentive to our needs, he also gave us our "space" to explore things on our own.
Boat ride was relaxing as we cruised past houses, temples and shops along the canal, sipping beer and observing the daily lives along the waterway and seeing a different side of Bangkok. We especially enjoyed the walk near the lotus pond and to the forest temple, the puppet show at the artist house was also very nice. Before the show starts, we tried feeding the canal's fish (amazingly overflowing!), he even stopped an ice-cream seller (i was craving for coconut ice-cream) who came by at the artist house and begun scooping out yummy ice cream (served with sticky rice :) from his boat. Overall a very pleasant tour! With Tom, it felt like we were touring with a friend rather a guide. Thank you for a wonderful experience Tom!
