What a find in bustling Bangkok !

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Oct 16, 2012
We leave Loy La Long today, after 10 days of absolute bliss.
We had no expectations of our stay here, but made a deliberate decision to steer clear of the big hotels we've stayed in before.
So, from the beginning:
As many others have said on T.A., it can be very difficult actually getting here.
We ended up with a very convoluted taxi/train/tuk tuk method, but Ian way that added to the fun of getting here.
However, I wouldn't always want that level of excitement so I suggest that you tell the taxi/tuk tuk driver that LLL is on the river, about halfway between Royal Orchid Sheraton/River City and Chinatown, and in the grounds of Wat Pathumkongka ! Good Luck !!
When you arrive at LLL you are greeted by a very friendly, young, spunky Boat; you shed your shoes in the peaceful foyer, your feet caress the beautiful old floor boards & you know you're in for a restful holiday.
We stayed in the Green Suite on the ground floor and just loved that we felt we were barely above water level; with every passing boat the wake would send the water sloshing & it became almost hypnotic.
We would sit at our open windows and throw bread for the catfish; not sure that this was politically correct but great fun.
The room itself is spacious and very functionally designed, with both a king sized bed and a large day bed for lolling around watching TV/DVDs from the vast selection on offer.
The spray toilet took a little bit of getting used to, but I'm now so addicted, I want one at home !
So, what were the absolute highlights ?
1). Staying in a beautiful old teak building that has been beautifully restored but still retains a strong sense of its history
2). Wonderfully friendly & helpful staff, led by Boat, who with reasonably limited English, can very successfully meet the needs & requests from guests from all over the world
3). The food: we had thought we would be eating in Chinatown at night, but instead became addicted to the Dim Sum, fried rice, Tom Yum and Pad Thai cooked up by Ju & Layla.
4). The lounging areas; there are sitting areas both up & down stairs, with a variety of Thai & Anglo seating arrangements, so plenty of options for total relaxation.
5). Proximity to Chinatown: great food, cheap shopping, interesting temples
6). Proximity to ferries & Sky-train. Once you've got your bearings it is just a short walk to the ferry stop, or catch a tuk tuk to the Sheraton.
Just past the Sheraton you'll find a lane leading down to the river; the ferry here can take you up or down the river for a very cheap day's entertainment, or go 2 stops downstream to Central, hop off & you're at Saphan Taksin station on Sky Rail.
7). Probably THE most captivating element of LLL is the birds eye view it gives you of life on the Chao Praya River.
Every type of watercraft you can imagine (& others you've never thought of) ply this river, both up/down & across.
Despite being busier than a city road at peak hour, there is never a sign of chaos and obviously a courtesy that rules the waters.

Will We be back ? ABSOLUTELY !!

Room Tip: The Green Suite is particularly good if you don't want to be negotiating stairs, and is ideal...

We stayed here as two older ladies travelling together and had the most wonderful time. Win-U and Boat looked after us tremendously well and treated us as valued members of their family. They fussed over us, worried about us and went the extra mile no matter what it was we wanted. Win-U ran messages on his trusty bike for us, Boat organised tuk tuks and taxis, and they cooked up a storm every morning for breakfast. we felt valued and cared for. These wonderful men have big hearts and it shows. The hotel is beautifully positioned on the river, so the views are wonderful. (my favourite time of day was 6 o'clock.. 6 in the morning the light was beautiful, and the city was just starting to wake and the boats began their day, and at 6 in the evening when the light was again beautiful, and the city started prettying itself up for the night..)
This place has a beautiful, quirky ambience and I will remember my time here with great fondness. Yes, the showers are a bit tricky, and sometimes tuk tuk drivers and taxi drivers find it difficult to find, but it is more than made up for by the crew who have created a home away from home for travellers.

Room tip: We stayed in both the red room and the blue room, but the blue room won out for us as it had a better view.

I stayed here in September 2012 in the blue room. This hotel had loads of character, lovely views and great common areas - it was especially nice to sit by the river for breakfast. We ate dinner at the hotel when we arrived and the food was very good. Breakfast was also pretty good.
The room itself was great, but the bathroom was a problem - it sure did have character but in the end when I stay at a hotel I'm after a functional bathroom and this bathroom was just difficult! The mirror tucked behind the door was not usable and the shower was a small wooden barrel.
Other reviews have commented on the ultra helpful staff, however this was not the case on my stay - not that they were unfriendly or unhelpful, but some staff had only just started working there and so weren't able to suggest things to do etc.
While the location in one way does add to the adventure staying at this hotel, the big downside was that MANY taxi and tuk tuk drivers had no idea where is was, or were unwilling to take us there when we pointed on our map where it was. This made it very diffucult to get back after a long day of sightseeing.
All in all I felt that the price I paid for this hotel was not good value for money. If it had been half the price I could have overlooked the poor bathroom but in the end I could have stayed at a 4 or 5 star hotel in a great location for only $10-20 more per night.

Loy La Long is a hidden get away from the huzzel and buzzel of bangkok. It is a Boutique Hotel and a hidden treasure with only a few rooms and right at the river.
It has the best Dorm i have stayed at in the past 2 years. My friends stayed in the Red room and with all the perks. It is well looked after by people that care for this special place and clean... The team there is an oiled mashine and always there to help you, with tips for places to go or just day to day needs while in BKK. Breakfast changes everyday and the food menu got changed while we were there and we got a taste of every new dish and it will be delish...
Sometimes it takes time that the taxidriver finds the place, but once they are at the Temple you can talk them threw it. Never mind if it takes time.... Just tell the driver if he finds it straight away you tip him a 50 on top... It worked for us....
As well I must mention Boat and the rest of the team were so helpfull when I got scamed. They came with me everywhere to ensure I was treated well. Thank you for everything! You all are amazing and rock... See you again for sure...

Room tip: All the rooms with balcony, but really nevermind which one...

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights and had a great stay. If you're looking for something a bit different then this hotel is a must. Yes its hard to find but well worth it. The views out over the river are fantastic and sitting having a Gin and Tonic in the evening is just great. The food was some of the best we had in Bangkok and the staff are an absolute pleasure to deal with.
