Fantastic view of Bangkok river specially an old temple across the river located on the edge of the BKK river. Go before 1830 to see the sunset and the temple lit up. Service is good but drinks are a bit more than usual. Gin and tonic at £5 each. All in all a must to do.

"At Sala Arun, the excellent service and superior facilities make for an unforgettable stay".This copy on Agoda does not reflect our experience.

I called on the day of arrival to confirm a late check in (9.30/10pm). Great - someone would be waiting for us with an arrival drink - I was told to ask the taxi driver to call on arrival in the area to check the exact location ... Perfect I thought.

When we arrived the taxi driver could not get through to reception, he kindly walked up and down to locate the hotel (hard to find in an old part of town at night empty, not lit, located down a side alley). He could not get through on the phone as there was no one in the hotel, basically lights off and all locked up! Our taxi had left. After waiting at the front door for 30 minutes we walked through a building site to the back of the hotel with our bags and shouted up at the rooms for 15 minutes to get the attention of guests. No response. A local heard our shouting and made a call. Ten minutes later someone arrives and we clamber through the back entrance. When we viewed the back area in daylight on the day of leaving we see that the fence does not meet river and when I lost my footing I could have fallen through the hole!

So we check in. The key to this place is the fantastic view across to Wat Arun - I am a sucker for a good view and this place has it. However, it did not balance out for the price - when the TV was not working on arrival, the safe did not work, the balcony needed a good sweep, there was a large area of damp around the door to the balcony and simple things like scuffed walls that just need a lick of paint. The TV was sorted out in the morning (safe apparently broken and needs replacing).

Be aware that the 2 buildings to the right seem to be having their interiors finished and the builders do this outside to the right of your balconies. We ended up going inside when we headed back for a mid temple visiting rest! I think that should be finished soon though.

We did receive a sincere note of apology from the Management about the hotel being closed when we went to check in and were given a bottle of sparkling wine and a 400bht food voucher for the sister restaurant 2 streets away. That was a nice touch. We also spoke to one Manager who said that they would review procedures for check in. The sister hotel has a great restaurant and the food was great - we would recommend it.

However, we felt that there was no one in charge at the hotel and it had the appearance of being run by newbies - all very polite, helpful and enthusiatic, but limited English. Not the fault of the staff, they are trying their best but it is a struggle for them when things go wrong as it is difficult to communicate and our Thai is from a phrase book! No one seemed to be able to assist us without making a call to someone! The lady at the Front Desk who assisted us was very apologetic and helpful and must be thanked.

Breakfast, if cooked, is made up the road at the sister hotel, so you have one person running up the road to collect it, no one taking orders and then when we checked out no one on the desk. Breakfast was ok, cereal, toast, cooked eggs etc and a great Pad Thai! Worth ordering. But it takes a while so call down in advance if you are in a hurry and order. We chatted with other guests at breakfast which is always interesting and we agreed that although the service was rather random, it was given with a great smile and eagerness to please. My order was taken down wrongly and something else delivered but we kept it as I did not have the heart to have the waitress run down the road again!

Also on leaving we thought - is there not supposed to be someone at the hotel staying for safety in addition to the guests - or are the guests left to it? It was obvious from the lights on that guests were in their rooms when we were trying to shout at the windows to get someone to let us in. If there was an incident and the place was locked from the inside, no one could get in!!

All in all, it is really an interesting location, amazing views and minutes to the temples so this is an advantage. Also some good local massages around the corner that we loved. Good wifi as well and free.

Ignoring the check in episode, we still feel that on reflection, the price is to high at the moment based on the quality of the rooms. It depends what you are after. We opted for a more local feel before moving across town for our last night and we loved the area, the building, the view and would return if the hotel makes some changes.

On reflection - We informed the front desk of the following. Bin in bathroom would be useful. List of the TV channels in the room would be useful as the TV menu only in Thai. The handle in the sink kept falling off when we used it. I think it is the design or maybe needs to be screwed in better?

Room Tip: Go high for a good view. Ensure you call in advance if if are checking in late and ask someone to wa...

I did not stay in this hotel (its on the other side of the BKK City) but i sure did visit the Bar on top of this Hotel. The name is EAGLE'S NEST. and what a breathtaking view. This hotel is a new venture by Arun Residences. While their 'The DECK' may be an established place, but this new thing is awesome. After you are done sight seeing at Wat Pho and The Grand Palace, head over early to this Hotel top and reserve your seat for the spectacle to follow. This bar is a small place thou, with a variety of drinks and a limited finger food menu. But who cares when what you have in front of you, just on the other side of the river, the Majestic Wat Arun. Sit thru the evening, soaking in the various colours that unfold before ur eyes as the temple travels thru the yellow sun light to the evening hues of pink and blue and finally the amazing artificially lit up riverfront. This is a photographer's sweet spot. All worth the beer priced around 150 Baht. Go for this one, and be sure to go a li'l early.

Room Tip: Its a few minutes walk from Wat Pho in a dingy lane but the hotel is nice. You need to go there a li...

We stayed in the suite for 5 days and it was beautiful however there were some maintenance issues which was disappointing as the price was quite high so were our expectations. There were renovations going on next door which the management had no control over. After complaining about the noise starting at 6am and telling staff we wished to leave the management orgainised a voucher towards the cost of a meal at the Deck restaurant We decided to stay we had previously been told the suite was not available the last two nights of our stay however we were not informed that the reason for this was that there were renovations to be made there so the noise continued. There were also problems with televisions not working ipod docks not available. The breakfast was also very average for such a place. Some staff were extremely helpful but they had no control over the situation. On my last visit I couldn't rate Sala Arun highly enough unfortunately this was not the case on my recent visit.

Room Tip: Check on renovations before staying. Higher floors have better views

The Sala Arun will not warm your heart on first site. It's within Old Bangkok's working markets. As a westerner, it may cause second thoughts at first sight. But don't judge the book by it's cover. Inside the hotel is beautiful and quaint. We stayed in the Sala Suite for the the view of the Temple of Dawn and it is exactly what you see in the pictures. The suite is quite large with all of the amenities you could want. The bathroom is large enough for the everyday football team. Our experience was that breakfast was warm and friendly with the guests like a bed and breakfast. The hotel covers all of the bases inside. Outside you'll love what you'll find if you are a person looking for culture. The Grand Palace and Wat Pho are within short walking distance. Taking a boat over to the Temple of Dawn is even quicker. Tuk Tuks are at each corner in the area awaiting your exciting ride. Trust these guys driving abilities against everything your brain tells you. We didn't see any accidents in Thailand in over a week and it's really fun. Seeing the markets for what they are and the cultural differences from the west is really getting out an traveling. The smells, the quick movements, the sounds, it's what drives Bangkok's food industry. and the pictures of the locals and the food being served, especially at night are fantastic. If you are a serious traveler looking to experience culture but want to have a 5 star sanctuary, this is it.

Sala Arun is located at the end of a small soi right opposite the grand palace. It is within walking distance of some of the best sights in Bangkok, including Wat Pho, and a very short ferry rode across the river to Wat Arun. Our room had an amazing view of Wat Arun. Most nights we spent some time sat on the balcony with a beer admiring the view. The room was beautiful- massive comfortable beds, a huge bathroom with enormous walk in shower, complimentary toiletries, robes and slippers. The furnishings and decorations were authentically Thai, and the rooms were sparkingly clean. Each day we returned to the room and the towels had been replaced, bathroom cleaned. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was tasty with a small choice of cooked food, plenty of fresh fruit, cereal, toast and yoghurt. In all we really enjoyed the three nights we spent here. It was our first stay in Thailand, and Bangkok was our first stop. Sala Arun was a great start to a fantastic holiday. If I was to return to Bangkok, I would definitely stay at sala Arun!
