Bangkok City Hotel

Have stayed at lots of different hotels in Bangkok - expensive to budget - but will always book The Bangkok City Hotel now. This is a newly built hotel, approx. opening late 2010. The rooms are clean and modern with a fridge, remote-control air-con, two free bottles of water everyday and a sensible size large safe. Clean bathroom with corner baths - could even sit down whilst taking a shower! Don't know how some people on this site have complained about staff? We found them extremely polite and very helpful. I suggest speaking to them how you would like to be spoken to first? The doormen very courteous and helpful with baggage. Breakfast does the job and very good for the overall price you're paying. Location is on the main Petchburi Road and about a 25 minute steady walk to Pantip - that was at the walking speed of my 71 year old mother. A ten minute walk round the corner of the hotel is the Ratchetewi Skytrain station - one stop from Siam Square, MBK, etc. To summarise: If you want a chocolate on your pillow, towels folded in pretty shapes and 300 baht Evian water in your fridge, then don't book this hotel. However, if you want a clean, friendly and cheap hotel in a good location then look no further than The Bangkok City Hotel - I will now always book this place. Very happy to have finally found a decent hotel for the right price.

Is it a high quality cheap hotel or a low quality hotel looking to be more premium in the future. I always have my favourite Bangkok Hotel but every now and then i like to refresh things with an alternative stay to keep in touch with everything Bangkok. On this occasion i saw a new hotel offering rooms from approx 1000 Tbht per night and looking at the website it looked exceptional. Five only of these GREAT VALUE rooms ONLY were available daily and the special ran from its opening in December 2011 through to Sept 2012.... so already there was some interesting scenarios. I think the five rooms ONLY on offer was a gimmick and it was extended to all!
I was expecting a fairly classy establishment (from the website) that was not so busy and bending over backwards to ensure your custom continued next time around.... what i got was a real mix. The hotel itself presents very well and the rooms are good, excepting the air conditioning on the room was crap. For a hotel six weeks old this was not good enough but the general room quality was very good except i prefer carpet to tiles and timber.
The hotel was one of these lower grade hotels where the reception cafe and breakfast are all built into one. Not something i like but dependant on the hotel can work. The foyers and corridors are not warm but again clean and presentable, as they should be for a new hotel.
Location is OK but not great. A little bit lost, but not to far away from Pratchunam area and Rathchathewi Skytrain. In saying this i found a very good street cafe heading from hotel towards station which was exceptional. The locals were queueing to get in and the food was great. The street seating was packed.
I did have real problems with the "inclusive breakfast" as this was the thing that resembled feeding time at the zoo. The offerings were limited and the refills lacking and when i kept having to return to get cutlery because i simply left it on the table with my computer i was shocked. It was truly remarkable to see the logistics of breakfast.... not so good.
This could be done so much better by simply allocating seating times for guests to avoid the 9.15am rush.
What do i think? I think that if the market they are catering to is the short cheap stay of a relatively high calibre then they have nailed it. On this basis the value for money is outstanding and IT IS WHAT IT IS, excepting the breakfast schmozzle. If in September the price changes then the quality of some areas will need to lift accordingly.
It is certainly not a relaxing holiday hotel but it does meet a market and at present they are doing that well.
I am still scratching my head with the confusing messages but i did think it very good value for money in its current format. For an overnight cheap stay it is great.

Room Tip: They only supply two pillows for a double king size bed. Suggest you organise extra if you need more...

this hotel was centrally located, 5 minute walk to the BTS, and 10 minute walk to the sky train. It's also walking distance to Siam Square, to the Jim Thompson House, and to the river (though not in the nicest area). It was also a 61 baht taxi drive to BKK Thai Cooking School where we took fruit carving and cooking lessons. The room was spacious and there are double and triple options. The views are beautiful, there are laundry facilities, and a pool which we did not get to try. The breakfast was free, though not great, it did the trick. I would definitely stay here again, and would recommend this hotel to a friend.

Location:
Good. Very near to BTS Ratchathewi Station, walking distance around 8 minutes to hotel.
You may take Airport Express Link connect to this station then walk to the hotel. There is 24 hours convenience shop next to hotel, very convenience.

Check In:
I have arrived to hotel around 1am, get my room very fast. My room located at level 10.The front desk service is so so, with lack of smiling.

Room:
Clean and Spacious, timber floor with no carpet. You may choose 1 king size bed or 2 twin beds. But the door is not sound proof, so you can hear people walking outside your room.

Bathroom:
Clean and spacious, with bath tub. Provided with 2 shampoo/ 2 bath gel /2 shower cap. Big washing basin so you can put all your toiletries. Water pressure not strong but can get a good hot shower.

Breakfast:
Room rate including buffet breakfast for 2 persons per night stay. Lots of peoples, but food variety is consider ok. Fried egg, fried noodle, rice congee, fried rice, dumpling, cornflakes, white braed with butter and jam milk, coffee, tea, soya bean, fresh fruits, cake....
You need to come early otherwise need to wait for the tables.

Check out:
Consider fast but also with very limited smiling. Order a Taxi to airport (as wehave bought lots of things in Bangkok, so taxi is needed), charge THB400, paid at hotel front desk.

Others:
Hotel also have a swimming pool, but i didn try.
There are lots of local street food stall nearby hotel area, you can try it.
I have tried massage nearby hotel, very good deal, just THB500 for 60 minutes, you can choose male or female massuer, good skill.

Overall:
No doubts the hotel location is good, but the surrounding area is not modern, so if you are expecting the area like Sathorn aor silom, you may have a preparation.

Room Tip: Choose for higher floor and facing back of the hotel front entrance as the hotel facing the main roa...

PRO:
-by the bts (10 min) and 7-11 is close as well

-Natural light was everywhere.
-Desk where you can work and lots of counter space for your stuff. It's really a spacious room.
-Beautiful view of Bangkok! It's a highrise building (unlike many affordable hotels/guest houses in the more touristy Sukhumvit area, which are shorter buildings and so you have dark rooms with no view)

-modern, clean rooms (though they could clean the walls better since they are all tile)

-WIFI (though I had to get a new code every day since mine always logged out)
-great views of Bangkok
-Free breakfast (not the best, but it does the job. Get there before 8 to avoid the crowds)

CONS
-Service at the front desk. It's OK that they don't speak English, but a smile wouldn't hurt. The bellmen, though, are amazing- so kind and always open the door for oyu

- Nearby a Mosque so you hear the Call to prayer several times a day. Not terrible but just a con in my opinion.

-Location-though it's nearby the train, it's not really by much of anything else, and the neighborhood is kinda dirty, so you'll have to take the train to get anywhere. Though there are food stalls nearby, while sitting at them we had several beggars come up and ask for money. Not a big deal in a city, but we just didn't want to be interrupted several times in our meal
so we decided to take the train and eat at other food stalls in nicer areas.

-Hotel had good food at the restaurant with no charge for room service.

-shower was hot but it was the lowest water pressure I've ever seen.

-Maids don't wipe the counter, just make the bed and bring towels. After a week it was getting dirty!

-hard bed, but that is common in Thailand so you'll have to get used to it.

Bottom line, if you are on a budget it's a great option for just $1050 baht a night. Also, since its a big hotel they might have rooms at the last minute when others are booked. I'd stay here again.

It's a new hotel. 5 mins walk to Ratchathewi BTS station...about 15 mins walk to Pratunam & Platinum Mall. Nice & clean room! The setback were difficulty in finding yourself a place during breakfast and they do not have iron & ironing board!!!

Checked into a twin 19th storey room with nice city views.
Bed was comfortable to give me a good night sleep.
Nice to see a LCD TV in the room.
Would appreciate the water from the shower to be stronger and hotter.
Had trouble logging into the free WIFI when I tries to log in with two devices (Laptop & mobile) simultaneously. Maybe they can do something to improve on that.
Took at least 20mins to fill the bath tub. Note that the bath tub is the sitting kind and not the kind that you can lie in it.
Breakfast was acceptable except for the sunny side up which egg yolk is fully cooked.
There's a 7-11 next door and the food street below that only comes alive at night.
Location is rather convenient. 10mins walk to the BTS and 20mins walk to the shopping district or malls of Pratunam and Siam Paragon.
15mins walk to Phaya Thai airport link.
