bitter - avoid at all costs

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jan 14, 2013
this hotel could be so much better. the reception desk are slow and unhelpful with attitude!!! the rooms are decorated well but smell of damp...the cleaning lady did waft some spray around but it could not mask the odour. the building site next door kept us awake ALL night and the breakfast was poor and we were 'thrown' the eggs we ordered. when we complained about the noise there were several others doing the same as well as one lady cancelling due to being 'messed' around at the reception.
Date of stay: December 2012
Room Tip: avoid the building site!

Location:
Located down Soi 13, from Sukhumvit rd. Nana BTS Skytrain is around 15 minutes walk away. It is quite a walk down Soi 13, far when walking with large luggage and is best advised to get a Tuk Tuk outside of Station, the road is also not great as a walk way with high pavements bad for bags with wheels. Within the area there is supermarket and many massage places (hIghly recommend "The Silk Spa" for a very good quality and reasonably priced foot massage). Also 10 minute walk to Sukhumvit road where there is lots of restaurants, markets, shops and bars etc in close vicinity. Overall a good location but a longer walk from BTS sky train than anticipated.
Room
The room (604) was smaller than expected, a little poky with a small window by balcony. There is a large queen bed that is comfortable and clean. The TV and desk is quite small compared to other similar priced hotels in the area. The seat is more of a cushion on a bench and due to no other room to put the suitcase laid it on there. The bathroom has a strange open toilet area behind the shower..not viewable but would find uncomfortable if staying with someone. The shower is ok and again has a see-through window into the bed room, for whatever reason someone would want that for. There is also a innovative control panel where one can control all the lights and dim from a touch pad screen, work well with lights, but not the TV function part of it - had to get up and turn TV off. One of the major lights, chandelier also didn't work and had to request bulb to be replaced (they should check). Overall the room decor is trying to be boutique and stylish, innovative but has many flaws and overall was not so comfortable or practical. It was disappointing from what was expected when booking this hotel from the photos.
Facilities
There is a restaurant on the basement. Was not well during stay so ordered room service, Pad Thai came quickly and tasted ok. There is a pool on the roof but more of a paddling pool (wouldn't be able to swim as such) the whole area on the roof is very small maybe enough room for 3-4 couples. It all tries to look very cool with modern decor but looks non functional.
Staff
Staff at the front door, security and concierge all seem very friendly and nice. Staff at the front desk however are the opposite and seem quite incompetent. Took ages to check-in even though room was pre-paid, kept trying to check-in other people at the same time, causing everyone to wait. No welcome drink as experienced at other close by hotels such as Skyy. Ordered a taxi night before to got to Makassan station, she put it in her book as a note and when checking out asked if taxi is ready (expecting it to be with notice of night before) she just runs out to the front asks security to get taxi, a taxi comes then drives off after finding out destination. When I complained that I booked it she said we can only confirm it if you pay 500 baht (??) never mentioned this night before. Also was quite rude, told her that I didn't use mini bar but still had to wait (10 minutes) until they got another staff member to check (even though they had CC details on file). Overall rudest reception staff especially in a country that has the highest level of hospitality.
Would not stay here again, too far from station (like to be able to walk to hotels easily), room was disappointing and frosty service from reception.

We stayed a week in this hotel, there were some issues but it was a good base to discover Bangkok. We got upgraded but not quite sure what are the differences in the rooms.

Pro's:
- very helpful staff
- new hotel
- not too far from BTS
- restaurants, bars (Soi Cowboy as well), shopping centre nearby
- nice lemongrass scent in the hotel
- free internet
- rooftop (okayish)

Con's:
- soi 13 where the hotel is not a very attractive street, quite cumbersome to walk it through and get to the BTS, even tho it is not that far. Often the street in front of the hotel was flooded with smelly sewer water.
- issues with room service: very basic cleaning, towels were not changed even on request, drinking water was not always provided
- nearby construction is noisy
- there was literally no view from the window, it looked on a wall. Strange construction.
- our room was close to the service room, very noisy all night
- in case you need early breakfast it might be a problem, they start late even tho the restaurant is open nothing is available

Having adventurously booked in at Citrus 13 before the place opened (in September) at an advantageous "soft opening" rate with an Executive King upgrade, I wanted to like the place. There is also much to recommend it, most noticeably the location close to two Skytrain stations, but for a new hotel it was already looking very tired around the edges in December, and the build-quality did not match the technical smarts (multimedia panel, touchscreen bedside console, etc.) in our room. Hence the lukewarm review.

The Citrus 13 could be a very pleasant boutique hotel, but needs to address some fundamental issues. It has possibly opened rather sooner than was wise, with very obvious signs of haste or incompetence in the finishing of rooms (at least ours). As noted variously elsewhere, the paintwork was substandard, the bathroom tiles looked to have been installed by an enthusiastic amateur, the shower drained poorly, three-month-old taps were showing signs of rust or spotting, and there was a musty smell in the room that suggested a much older - and not often frequented - establishment. This carelessness was glaringly at odds with a general "well-appointed" feel with all the executive trimmings and an impressive array of technical gadgetry.

The "tranquil" colour scheme in our room did not help: I notice some of the professional photographs present a much warmer ambience than the rather drab grey shades we experienced. Things were not helped by a rather curious arrangement of windows - the bedroom window looked out onto a plain white wall and a sort of perilous open balcony with no railing, while the bathroom was at the front of the hotel and had three large windows to the street. Even on the 5th floor, some more modest souls might prefer to pull the blinds down while taking a shower. On the plus side, the Citrus offered a very spacious and comfortable bed. No complaints at all on sleep quality.

The management also need to look seriously at what they wish to do with the rooftop pool area. It has a bar, but this was unstaffed and not very well stocked during our stay (and also resulted in the most expensive beer we had in Thailand, by a very wide margin). The pool itself was an interesting, even "challenging" shape for swimming, but the whole thing COULD be a very pleasant oasis with a bit of effort and TLC. As it was, we were sort of left feeling - as with many other aspects of the hotel - that it was a missed opportunity. Dead climbing plants on the wall surrounding the elevator shaft on the roof were not very feng shui.

Breakfasts were decent, with a chef on hand to make eggs as you wished, and the breakfast room was attractive enough, though down in the basement.

As for the location on Soi 13, it is definitely not as vibrant or as rich in eateries as Soi 11, but then again this is also probably no great disadvantage, as it makes for a quieter night. There is a good deal of building work going on nearby. It was not a great nuisance, but may even change the street for the better when completed.

Staff generally were friendly and helpful, and the reception personnel responded positively to comments made about ways to improve things. They need help from those above them in the Citrus chain of command to straighten things out and get the hotel on track before it inexorably slips down the rankings.

In sum, I would echo the reviewer who wrote "Citrus - get your act together".

This place has a great location and is very good value.

The rooftop pool is a refreshing escape from Bangkok's steaming heat. Our room was slightly quirky where you could roll the mirror back and the shower appeared. Great if you were into watching people wash, otherwise an odd inclusion.

Breakfast could be in a better location as it was underground and they kept playing annoying music.

Staff at reception tried to pull a dodgy by making us prepay for a taxi which was significantly pricier than the normal fare.

The hotel is well-located, walking distance from Sukhumvit road, and much of the area's nightlife and shopping areas. The Soi 11 nightlife area is a short walk on the next street over. Also convenient to the Nana and Asok BTS stations, as well as the Sukumvit MRT station, it is a convenient home base for a stay in Bangkok. Our stay included breakfast, consisting of some buffet-style offerings, as well as made-to-order eggs and omelets, which we enjoyed on multiple occasions. The rooftop pool area was decent, although the pool itself was too small and odd-shapred for actual swimming. The only real negative was the internet, which was unreliable even when connected with a physical LAN connection. I will be returning to Bangkok in a couple days, and have chosen the Citrus Sukhumvit 13 again for my next visit.
