Great business or quick get away hotel in the city!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 9, 2011
I like to visit Bangkok often and to try out new hotels, especially when they have great deals. This time however, I figured life is short so I'm going to splurge a bit and book the Novotel Ploenchit's Premier Executive floor room. I'm so glad I did! The service from the time I stepped out of the cab and into the lobby for check-in was nothing, but excellent all the way. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. As soon as I reached the lobby check-in desk I was quickly whisked up to the Executive Premier floor for a private VIP check-in experience. Everything was taken care of while I sat in the Exec floor lounge, and before I knew it, I was in my room just steps away. I chose the executive premier rooms for the free wi-fi in the room and around the hotel, the complimentary breakfast and cocktails and snacks in the executive lounge. What's great is that you can use more than one device and not get charged separately for each, like at some other hotels I've stayed at. The staff at the executive lounge are so warm, friendly, and courteous. Once you get to know their names, it's like you've been friends for ever.

The hotel is still very new, very modern yet very comfortable. This is not a large and spacious hotel so everything is very compact. The rooms are a bit smaller than I expected for an executive floor room, but extremely well equipped and very comfortable! The only complaint I would have is that the air-conditioner was a bit noisy with rattling sounds all night which kept me awake. However, the following nights I just had to turn it off, and the room was wonderfully peaceful and yet still cool all night long. Had a great sleep.

As for location, it doesn't get much better with the Ploenchit BTS station right out front. You can pretty much get anywhere without having to worry about taxis and traffic jams. What's more, one or two stops away and you're at the major shopping malls or excellent restaurants in the city.

The hotel's restaurant has an excellent buffet spread, although I didn't get to try it since I can't eat that much. However, the selection is simply amazing....even more amazing is the decor...first class all the way. I ordered ala carte, and it was also excellent.....service equally excellent too.

As for the facilities, I never got to use the pool as it rained all the time I was here. However, it's pretty small with only a few poolside chairs and a couple of tables....still, it's good enough for a quick dip on a hot day, or getting in a few laps. I did get to make use of the gym regularly though. It's relatively small, but well equipped with brand new equipment and pretty much everything you need for a decent work out. However, there is no regular stationary bike which I usually use. They do have the seated stationary bikes with backrests though.

Overall, this is an excellent hotel in so many respects, but perhaps caters more for the business person or for a quick get away in the city. This is definitely not a spaciously spread out resort style hotel, so families may find it a bit cramped and a bit too modern and businesslike to be spending much time in the hotel itself. For me, I stayed here for a quick 6 night get away, and just wanted to try another one of the Accor hotels which I am a member of. So far, the service at all their hotels have been excellent, and I will always keep coming back because of the quality of the hotels and the genuine warmth and friendliness of the people.

As a side note, I really cannot understand how any reviewer can say anything negative about the service at the hotels here. I have never ever had any bad experiences with anybody at any hotel. The Thai people are so incredibly nice that I can only conclude that any complaints and dissatisfaction with service could only be attributed from a miscommunication, since English is typically not their first language. So to all visitors to Thailand, please realize this and be more patient and understanding. You may be cranky and after your long and tiring flight/journey, but know that taking out your frustration on the check-in staff due to a little miscommunication will definitely not make your experience any less stressful for everyone. Relax and enjoy!

Loved every moment of our stay. The room was not large but very comfortable and nicely appointed. Interet access straight forward and fast. The exec lounge was outstanding and very worthwhile as an up-grade, unlike some other Accor hotels.
Staff were consistantly helpful and friendly - nothing was too much trouble and everyone was willing to go the extra mile. Good suggestions about where to go for first timers in Bangkok.
Location terrific - just across the road from the train which goes everywhere or connects to everywhere. Cheap and efficient and quicker than a taxi. Staying again next year.

Room tip: well appointed, clean and light - good temperature control

The novotel ploenchit is a businesshotel with a modern cold atmosphere.

pro's
- good location, near BTS and major shoppingmalls
- With BTS as starting point you can reach pretty much within a reasonable timeframe
- The rooms are new
- bed is good
- airco quiet
- shower fine
- breakfast good
- if price is reasonable upgrade to room with lounge access

Cons
- no holiday atmosphere
- not much restaurant options within walking distance
- Swimmingpool area not really nice
marriot resort and spa, has in my view the nicest atmosphere and pool, the royal orchid shearton has anice pool area as well.
- the staff is artificial friendly

TIP: the taxis in bangkok are still relatively cheap. But the traffic jams are getting worse.
If you want to visit certain areas more frequently stay near that area. A cheapt taxi is great, but not if it takes you 1 hour or more for a small distance. its no exception.
Or use bts/boats on the river

We booked the executive room for 4 nights in this hotel, and it's great stay and I will return to this hotel for sure next time.

Hotel:
Location is great, just opposite the Ploenchit station, and just 2 stations from the main shopping area. 10 mins taxi from Central World. I took around 40 mins travel back to airport. Easy, convenient and fast (no traffic jam).

Room:
We were arranged with twin bed, however, we found out they provided us with an baby bed, so we decided that our 4 year old girl can sleep on the day bed, and our 17 months old daughter can sleep on the baby bed, so we asked for a change of room with double bed. They were very helpful and within 10 mins, we were in another room exactly what we wanted.
Room are stylish and new. however, we would prefer to have a shower area with a door, as the water won't spilt when we took our shower. the corner of the desk in the room could have a rounded corner rather than a sharp one (non-child friendly). One more, air-conditioner is very noisy at night time, quite noticeable.

Service:
Services are good, however, the housekeeping service is a bit of inconsistent. The first day, they cleaned our room not until we came back at 4pm. We went out at around 9am that morning. We asked for 4 bath towels, however, after they finished tidying up the room, they only left 2 towels (all 4 nights!). So, every single night, we have to ask for extra 2 towels before shower, but were given to us within 10 mins. In general, the executive floor staff are all very nice and helpful with excellent English.

Swimming pool is a bit small, and cool in afternoon (hotel building blocked the sunshine).
I would recommend to stay in Executive floor as it included breakfast, happy hour cocktail drinks and snack and free internet.

New hotel built 6 month ago : really looking fine inside, but staff at concierge for taxi are not professional enough and we" had lots of problems with the taxi they called for us ! (no meter) it was better to catch a taxi ourselves !
Breakfast : Too cold and can't change temperature : not fine !!
Rooms : very clean ! and brand new !
Internet : only if you pay, except at reception where you have 2 MAC always busy free for 20mn
Swimming poolo : small, cold and no service there (not a good point)
Service : Worst, on last day, when moving to another hotelvery close (100M trip), they never helped us with a car service to transport our 6 luggage, they just only ask for Bath 500 to have it done with a limousine !! so i did it myself with a Street taxi (5 mn) for 40 bath !

Got it through Latestays at 2100 B /day ! i won't be back there unless price attractive

Room tip: Rooms very satisfiying

We (2 adults and 3 kids) stayed for 2 nights in August 2011. We didn't get off to a great start as the hotel would not honour the premier floor booking we had made (apparently the booking agent's fault but would not assist in rectifying the issue - just refused to honour it). The hotel rooms are nice enough and breakfast is good but on the second day the smell from one of our bathrooms was hideous. There is no excuse for that - it is clearly an ongoing and regular issue and there is simply no reason to take the risk with this hotel that you may get a smelly room. The location is ok but hotel staff can't direct you to the closest restaurants etc (compared to the staff at Plaza Athenee where we also stayed 10 days later who were outstanding).

Dear Ms./Mr. mkin,

Sorry to hear that your booking was not handled properly and your stay has not been a perfect one.   Please accept our apology.
On the other hand, we were pleased to learn that our room and breakfast setting delighted you.  We do receive from time to time compliment from our guests on our bright and spacious rooms.
For the unpleasant smell on the 2nd day, we believe something could have been broken that caused the problem.
After few comments earlier in the year, we took no chances and have replaced the less efficient floor traps in all our rooms.  It could therefore be an isolated case.  I thank you for taking your time to give us your valuable comments and hope that we can remain our privilege to serve you on your return visits to Bangkok.

Sincerely yours,
General Manager
