“Lovely respite from hectic Bangkok!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2013

This boutique hotel is gorgeous - I'd prefer this to a modern purpose-built hotel any day.
Being old does have a few drawbacks however - the squeaky bedroom floor for example, meaning if someone needs to get up in the night, the other person is inevitably woken up.

The setting and the room itself were lovely and we found the staff to be friendly and really helpful. We enjoyed the short boat trips to the mainland and never had to wait long for a transfer. We had thought that there would be 24 hour boat service but it was only running until midnight. One evening we did stay out a bit later - we asked first - and this wasn't a problem.

The reason this doesn't get 5 stars from me is that we arranged a pick-up from the airport and paid the driver direct. Unfortunately he denied this and the hotel tried to charge us again upon checkout. We explained we'd already paid and the hotel called the driver who initially admitted to only receiving a tip, then said we'd paid him half (why would we do that?!). It was eventually sorted out but left us short of time to get to the airport (we only just made our flight) and was an unpleasant note to end things on.

However, looking back at our photos reminds me that we did have a lovely time here and if we return to Bangkok, we would definitely stay here again.

Dear MarlsC,
Warmest greetings from Praya Palazzo!
Thank you very much for your great review and for sharing your experiences with us. You are indeed right that being in such an old building does have a few drawbacks and the squeaky floors is most certainly the main one. We are trying to find a solution to this challenge without changing the antique floor or putting in a rug but the architecture does have its limitations. As soon as we have found a better way to reduce the noise we will most certainly share this with you.
Thank you for all your compliments and it is a pity that the airport transfer caused you some disappointments.
When guests book our hotel's airport transfer the price or cost for this service is added to the bill and there is no need to pay separately. Thanks to your experience and for highlighting this to us we now realise that we must better communicate this to our guests to ensure they don't pay directly to the driver as they may indeed think it is their tip. However, we should have handled your case much better and more efficient as it did cause you to be delayed for no reason. Our sincerely apology for that and we will take these learnings very seriously. Thank you for sharing this.
We do hope that you will stay with us again and this time, we will ensure your airport transfer and of course your stay is as smooth as possible.
Warmest regards from our entire team!

I prefer small and boutique hotels as you get more personal and intimate, as well private service.
Praya palazzo offered all mentioned, we were greeted at the deck and directed to our room, no need of additional check in, paper to sign was waiting at the room- perfect. All done less than 1 min.:)
Some practicalities: our room, no 135, was on the ground floor, no view. For us this was fine, room stayed cooler (I prefer not to use AC, whenever i can) and as we didn't spend much time inside the view had no importance. If this is important to you there are rooms with views etc.
Room had entrance area with desk and chair, left side was door to the bathroom and right hand door to the bedroom.
In the bathroom you will find all needed toiletries and little bit more, listed nicely in website and you can see my pics as well. I also informed staff that to add more hangers would be beneficiar, which they planned to do already, so by now it might be all done, as we were there in december.
Laundry service- good quality, prices: 70-240 thb, dry cleaning: 190-650 thb.

Breakfast: can be seated inside or by the swimming pool. When the house was full they offered buffet breakfast, otherwise it was a la carte.
Swimming pool- gorgeous and refreshing water, truly relaxing with view to the river.

Whenever you have a request or question they were very helpful, so dont hesitate to ask. :)
I appreciated a lot the little talks with hotel staff about the hotel and its future plans as well past happenings. I mentioned I collect flags of countries I visit and she was kind enough to bring me the flag of Thailand.

Main attractions were close by, our highlights were Wat Pho, Grand palace, golden buddha (traimit), Jim Thomson house.

Hotel was very welcoming, homey, tranquil, relaxing, perfect place- loved it, I recommend highly who value the same qualities. Need for bars, music, busy nightlife- short taxi ride.

Would I return to Bangkok this would be my choice to stay.

Be happy,
Kadi

Room Tip: some rooms have no view, can face a wall. Others lot of sunlight, view etc. Be sure to ask if you ha...

Dear Kadi-rei,
Warmest greetings from Praya Palazzo!
Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a detailed review. We are really happy that you had a great time and we are proud to read all your compliments and observations.

It is correct that even we are directly at the river, not all the rooms have a river view. In fact, most rooms wont have a clear river view because even if faced towards the river, the lush garden which offers some nice shade, better privacy and a home for a lot of birds and butterflies, does block the view quite a bit. It is a conscience choice we made and we hope our travellers understand this as it would be otherwise very hot and our mansion won't be looking as nice if there were no gardens.

However, during the floods of 2011 a lot of our gardens were destroyed so particularly areas where rooms face the opposite side of the river requires more plants to make the views nicer. Thank you for sharing your observation.

We have noted your hanger comment and this is also a valid point and we will ensure to improve on this.

We are glad we could get you the flag as you had shared with us how much you love them and that you are a collector. It is a small thing to do and we are delighted that we could make you happy with this small gesture.

Thank you once again for writing such great detail and sharing your photos.
Warmest regards from our entire Praya Palazzo Team!

In the midst of this busy city is the most wonderful retreat with excellent service and beautiful rooms. It only has limited rooms but is very generous in space with views across the river and its own junk to ferry you to the other side of the river. The food matches the high quality of the service and architecture. I almost don't want to tell you about this hotel as I wouldn't want to find it full next time I am in Bangkok!

Dear Anthon L,
WOW, what a great compliment, thank you very much!
Also thank you for sharing your experiences even-though you like to keep our mansion your secret! In fact many guests share the same belief because we are indeed a super small boutique hotel and rooms can sometimes sell out quite fast. Please do let us know next time you like to come back so we can ensure a great room is awaiting you!
Thank you for your compliments on our food and service and indeed, the Italian century old architecture of our mansion is quite remarkable, especially given it is in the heart of old Bangkok. This gives great character to our mansion and we try hard to communicate the same through our cuisine, service and overall offers.
We hope to welcome you back again soon.
Safe travels!

After a 3 week trip to South-Esta Asia, we stayed 4days/3 nights in this gracious, historic hotel and really appreciated our stay, from our arrival till our departure. The staff was very helpful and nice. There was a commercial event the day after our arrival and we were offered a full day tour in Bangkok (including lunch and dinner) as a compensation. A very nice attention from the hotel direction. Furthermore it was also very nice to hear the birds singing in the garden in the morning....in such a busy city...We felt as we were far away but yet in the center, near the Grand Palace etc....Food is also very good . Do not hesitate to stay in this charming mansion. Highly recommended

Dear Jlmini,
Warmest greetings from Old Bangkok!
Thank you very much for your great review and taking the time to write. This is really very kind of you.
Your description of our location is absolutely brilliant. It is exactly as we like to communicate our location. Thank you for these words and if you don't mind, we would like to borrow this phrase from time to time to explain our location to other guests.

We hope you will be back soon. Just a few days ago eggs hatched and we have now yet another young bird family freely roaming our residence. It is really nice to have them as our "house guests", creating beautiful songs in the morning and often throughout the day.

Thank you once again for your nice write up and look forward to welcome you back.
Warmest regards from the entire team!

We started our first few days of our three week trip to Thailand at this hotel. The grounds and pool were spectacularly beatiful and it was very peaceful.

The manager took a personal interest in our stay there and the rest of the staff treated us very well.

You have to take their boat to and from Bangkok a five minute boat ride, but we never had any problem to order it to take us across the river or pick us up at the end of the night.

Their boat dropped us off at the ferry dock across the river and from there you could catch a ferry or walk to the road to take a taxi.

We did not eat dinner or lunch there but the breakfast was very good.

Dear Gcemyers,
Warmest greetings from Praya Palazzo and thank you very much for your kind words. We are happy to read that you had a great time and that you like our mansion and our team!
It is a real pity you did not have a dinner with us so please do come back next time and sample our heritage cuisine. It is really nice to be at the river front with some delicious food and a nice glass of wine in the evening and see the river life passing by after a long day in town!
So, now you have a reason to be back :)
Thank you again for all your compliments and recognising our team, the gardens and the mansion.
Wish you many happy travels.

This is an outstanding, lovely boutique hotel located right on the banks of the Chayo Praya River. We stayed a week , and everyday were most grateful for the service, excellent food, and refuge from the bustle and chaos of Bangkok. We really enjoyed meeting other guests. The managers initiated genuine interest in our satisfaction and assistance with arranging activities. It is very interesting - they have their own boat and pier to get us to the main pier and shopping streets, historical sites across the river. If you want glass and steel- you might want something else, but if you are looking for refined history, character, unique stay - this is it!

Dear KAP245,
Warmest greetings from Praya Palazzo!
Thank you very much for your fantastic review. We are very proud to read that you had such a great time and thank you for sharing your observations and experiences.
Thank you for highlighting that our team went out of their way to make all your arrangements.
Your description of our mansion and the contrast you made with modern buildings is truly spot on. Indeed travellers seeking a sleek and modern building will be disappointed as we are quite the opposite. However, any traveller seeking culture, heritage and a little bit of great food and wine will be quite happy here. Bangkok has several old Italian buildings from the same era but they are almost all under state control and host official functions, so we are really lucky with our mansion and that it can be open to likeminded travellers alike.
Thank you once again for writing such a lovely review.
Warmest regards from our entire team!

We like boutique hotels for their intimacy and quiet. We stayed at the Praya Palazzo for 4 days on an extended tour of SE Asia and it was a wonderful experience at nearly every level. The building, the former villa of a thai royal who managed the countries finances in the 20s has been lovingly restored. The food was excellent. In a city filled with really great restaurants we ate there 2 of the 4 nights and had fabulous Thai dishes adapted from recipes developed for the royal family ( in truth most of the really good food came into existence in this way as the countries cuisine outside of the food stalls comes from the royal kitchens). The staff at the hotel, a mix of european hotel professionals and natives was excellent and attentive without being intrusive. their pride in the hotel was obvious and their proactive willingness to discuss what needed to be made better was refreshing in a hotel world made paranoid by TripAdvisor and others. if and when we go back we would stay no where else...

Room Tip: Reserve 2nd floor rooms as they are quieter

Dear MarkCanon,
Warmest greetings from Praya Palazzo and a big big big thank you for your kind words. Your review is truly beautifully written and it gives us great pride that you had such a great time with us. Thank you for sharing the history and for also mentioning our cuisine. It is true that the roots of Thai cuisine started not that long ago and we are proud to offer some of these examples to our guests. Interestingly though the Thai cuisine nowadays has changed a lot where focus came a lot on presentation (colour full extra ingredients for example) so if guests are seeking the best presentation then they may be a little disappointed with our heritage cuisine. We instead focus on its authenticity, textures, balance of the ingredients and let each ingredient speak for itself. We are proud that we have quite a big Thai following as a result of these efforts and more recently we also received international acknowledgements, including yours!
Please do visit us again in the future and we hope to introduce to you some new menu items for you to sample!.
Warmest regards from our entire team.
