by hop on hop off canal boat the quickest ways to get west-east through Bangkok and back. off the beaten track! Have a map, and a few baht handy (20 brings you all the way), and you get the best way of seeing local life in Bangkok while on the move! These days the western part is closed (due to water management), so start at pratunam...in any case... easier than this not possible.

Okay, it smells, it’s dirty and altogether unhealthy, but Khlong Saen Saep is an insight into the real Bangkok. Khlong Saen Saep wends its way from the centre of the Thai capital to the east. Numerous bridges cross over the canal, but the best way to see the Khlong is on one of the riverboats – search for the Khlong Riverboat Service to get details.
The ferries are quick, cheap and seeing the Khlong from water-level is the best way. This same service can be an effective way to beat the traffic and get around Bangkok too. Just be aware that the ferry stops are not really marked in English, so it pays to do some research and look at a map before you go. Also, access to the stops can be a bit underwhelming – one stop was accessed by a dodgy little lane. Just don’t expect bright signs and clean concrete. It just makes for a more interesting experience! Also, getting in and out of the boats involves stepping up over the side of the boat – no ramps or access doors, so they are not a good idea if you are not steady on your feet or particularly agile.

Bangkok used to be filled with criss crossing canals. That's when boats outnumbered cars. Now there are more cars and roads than most people want. This canal is the only water way left with public transportation. It's a lot faster getting there than in cars. No boat traffic.
