We found the New Siam hotels on the web and decided to stay at one of their newer locations, New Siam 3. It was only a few blocks from the others and is in a smaller building. Because it did not have a pool, the price was cheaper.
We found the reception helpful (though book ahead, they are always packed). We used the travel desk to get visas for Vietnam and had no problems. The visas were done when they said they would be done. The rest of the staff were very friendly and helpful, hurrying up if there were any issues with the room. When they saw us struggling with the door on the security camera (the key was programmed wrong), they quickly ran up with a new key.
Breakfast is not included but is very cheap and well made, mostly western dishes and banana pancakes. The fruit smoothies are divine and worth getting any time of day. The street where the hotel is located is busy but relaxed. It was not as much of a tourist ghetto as the nearby Khao San Road.
The rooms were clean and the A/C worked well (a must). The beds were good, there was a good safe that could fit our laptop.
Some Negatives: Wireless internet was not available, though it was offered at some of the other places on the block.
