“Aetas - couldn't fault”
Reviewed July 8, 2012 via mobile

We stayed here for my brothers Bangkok wedding. The hotel was great really clean, modern and luxurious. The service was really good we even all chipped in and gave the staff a big tip when we left. Beds were really comfy too. Happy hour in the down stairs bar was always good after a long day shopping. Location was really convenient too only 2 stops to paragon mall or 3 to mbk

We stayed at the AETAS at the start of our honeymoon at the end of May. We were very kindly upgraded to a suite which was amazing and of a very high quality. We enjoyed a very tasty honeymoon cake and bed was decorated with swan-shaped towels and rose petals which was a really nice touch and made our stay feel very special. We also received vouchers for a welcome drink which I think is standard.

We only stayed a couple of nights in the end (thanks to Swiss Air messing up the start of our honeymoon- they're not recommended!) but we enjoyed the amazing breakfast, it was really tasty with loads to choose from, my husband especially enjoyed the egg bar!

Overall, the hotel itself was brilliant and comes highly recommended but the location wasn't the best for us as the area seems more business whereas we would have preferred more local bars and street food but that was our fault for not doing more research before booking.

Aetas - May 2012
Fantastic hotel. Service was brilliant, we booked a delux double but was upgraded to a suite due to full capacity in the hotel. Our room was on the 19th floor the view was great too. Breakfast was good with lots of variety and happy hour served great cocktails. It is a bit out of the way to the main areas such as patapong, but it is just around the corner from sumkavit road and only a five minute (or free shuttle) walk to the sky train. Let's face it, a tuk tuk to most places should never be more than £2 or 100 baht (do not let them charge more than that - the general rule is about 100 baht per hour). Taxi's are also very cheap - do not barter always go for the meter as you will always benefit with the exception on the airport run and the multiple tolls that come with it.

Only very minor point, the pool area is very small and shaded - but still a nice place to relax and have a happy hour cocktail, pool bar food was good too.

Two minutes up the road from the hotel there is a row of shops/bars, we had a great Thai meal at one of the bars (can't remember the name but it was next door to the massage place and is surrounded by flowers and plants). The massage place was also very good - we had a 60min Thai massage for about 300 baht.

Some general comments about Bangkok that the first time visitor needs to be aware of.....Let's call them the four Ts.....

1) tuk tuks. General rule of thumb, expect to pay about 100 baht per hour tops. Short one off trips should cost you 50 baht. The drivers will start high (200 baht) but stick to your guns as there a plenty of them around. A night, after a few drinks, who would negotiate for an extra quid though????
2) taxis - try to get them on the meter - they will try and blag a fixed rate and be prepared to jump out of the cab before you set off if the driver doesn't play ball. At busy times the driver won't accept the meter - that's fine - you can choose to go with a low fixed rate or flag another one. Remember although 200/300 baht is not a lot of GBP, it's a fortune in Thailand so they are being cheeky and there is an element of (see below).....
3) tourist exploitation. either by the taxi drivers not using the meter, the tuk tuk drivers who will "take you to a government run jewellery shop/tailors/boat trip" or by the blokes on the street waiting to help with directions outside the main hotels. It's all linked in together with the shops with kick backs for the drivers/introducers and gives the impression it's about showing the best parts of the city (eg "come and see the big buddha" or the "beautiful pagoda" and at the end see the gems production for the big sell) with local knowledge. Also look out for the "helpful" people outside major tourist attractions such as the grand palace etc. Ultimately these "scams" are not threatening or anything, it's just trying to get tourists into shops to spend money and for people who earn less than a couple of quid an hour to get some more cash via encouraging them to go. If you are after a suit for instance, it can be a good deal. A fair exchange is no robbery after all.
4) transacting. If you are going to buy any goods, in particular at markets, start really low. When asking the price, the calculator comes out and the first price given will be extortionate. Straight away grimace and go to walk away. When they call you back they will chase you for your price go really low. For instance, we bought a pair of Thai fishermans pants on our trip. The initial price was 850 baht, we walked, and were chased with the calculator for our price and we said 100. After a brief conversation we got the pants for 150 baht. I'm sure some people may get even less - but you see the principle. At night markets, late on - if you barter hard don't expect a thank you or courteous customer service - they may even get aggressive if you don't buy but just keep walking - remember you probably won't see these people again so get the best deal you can and then get back to the hotel for a cocktail.

All in all we loved our trip to Bangkok and we would definitely stay again at the Aetas.

Great stay in the AETAS. Friendly helpful staff, super clean room with great modern ammenities due to the hotel being 1 year old. Location is good, 5min walk to SkyTrain and only two stops before you're in the heart of Bangkok and 45min taxi ride to airport.
This is a top city hotel and recommended for a stay before you head out on your travels around Thailand or on your way back before you fly home.
Looks especially good for business travelers. There's even a pool :-).

Room Tip: It's a brand new hotel so all the rooms will be good.

I rely heavily on hotel reviews in TripAdvisor for my annual 60-70 hotel nights thus the very positive reviews of Aetas Hotel/Bangkok seem out-of-line with my 3 night stay.

The hotel is about one year old, owned by a Thai who gave it a Greek name which means, I am told, "time". It is well situated in central Bangkok and a 5-minute walk from the all-important SkyTrain station named Ploenchit.

I had an unlucky stay at the Aetas. I use two MasterCards for hotel payments -- one from the USA and one from Thailand. Despite the Aetas being IN THAILAND, the check in staff refused to honor a Thai MasterCard ... in Thailand. We negotiated for an unnecesary 25 minutes and as this happened upon my initial check-in, I found this "policy" of not honoring MasterCard Thailand poorly thought out.

I was given a corner room which was immaculately clean. However, I did notice (see photos) that floor tiles were missing and the paint above my air-conditioning vent was chipping off.

On my second day, I had a 3PM business meeting in the hotel room and despite having been out of the room for 4 hours with the PLEASE MAKE UP ROOM sign on, the room still hadn't been made up by my meeting time I angrily called the front desk to complain and their explanation was that they had to make up rooms for incoming guests first and then my room. My take on this was that they cannot manage when their guest volumes spike; they don't hire enough housekeepers.

Their food & beverage (F & B) unit was very disappointing and indicative of a senior management keen on profits but bereft of high service standards. The lowest price sandwich -- a simple tuna sandwich -- is $15 / 450 baht. The breakfast buffet, while possessed of an extensive selection, must come all from Tesco or Big C. It has the cheapest brand of jams, those mini (factory) croissants, and "factory" like breads (see photo). Predictably, instead off having upmarket coffee, a university's canteen coffee would taste better.

Lest this review sound snarky, I just love Thailand. And, Thailand always has a few hotels in the top 10 of the world for service standards. The Aetas is in a very competitive marketplace in Bangkok and their management seems too frequently oblivious to the higher hotel standards of 4-star hotels in Bangkok.

I am sure their public relations team will thank me for my review and vow to fix some of these errors. Fixing the errors doesn't change a senior management who frankly are oblivious to high quality service found in other 4-star hotels.

Room Tip: Higher floors afford best views.

I've stayed here multiple times, and every stay is just better. Friendly staff, helpful people, and a great location in Bangkok. The sky train station is just a 7 minutes walk away, but 3 if you run. Too hot to stroll down the street? they have a shuttle to take you to and from the sky train station. The rooms are very new and clean. Modern facilities all around the hotel including business centre, fitness, and salt water swimming pool. This place is like a home in Bangkok, as the staff will go out of their way to accommodate all your needs. The special and personal touches is nothing that you will find in any other hotels in Bangkok. Stay here and you will not be disappointed

Room Tip: When going out on your excursion, take the hotel's business card with you. Because this place i...
