Oh - my - god! I have quite honestly never seen anything like it. My husband and I arrived late at night after searching for hours for the place. We had just arrived in Bangkok, but being seasoned travellers we know what to expect from a budget hostel. However, on my life, I never expectd this! They had no booking for us and we waited in the bar area whilst our room was prepared, just looking at this area we should have known to get out.
We walked up a few flights of stairs through what I assume were the dorms (strips of sponge on the floor), in near darkness and a flurry of cockroaches, to our room on the top floor. There was a single bed in there (despite booking a double room) and a large square of foam on the floor. The incredibly filthy sheet was too small for the foam and there was a strip of cloth over the window held in with pins. The door barely closed never mind locked, and the walls were covered in graffiti (we booked because it looked like a cool artistic place- you can tell there used to be some art on the walls but is now covered with mindless graffiti)!
After our long flight, all I wanted to do was take a shower. So I ventured to the floor below to check out the shared bathroom. This was the deciding factor for us to go and find somewhere else to stay. The walls in the bathroom were covered in years of grime, the toilet was disgusting and didn't even work, there was a strange plastic tub filled with dank water and soapscum, the electric shower was hanging off the wall and was clearly unused and there was rubbish everywhere! And it also seems acceptable to walk in on someone in the bathroom as of course there isn't a lock on what you might call a door.
The only redeeming factor of this place is that Patrick (the guy who showed us to our room) was very friendly and understanding and gave us some suggestions of where to stay.
Our 4 month trip was not off to a good start but all our future accommodation has been compared to this place. So, unless you're in the habit of drinking into oblivion, avoid this place at all cost. You can definitely find some clean and basic accommodation for a similar price on khao san rd.

Room tip: Find somewhere else!

Me and a friend stayed here for our first night in Bangkok and it was awful! We arrived after a 12 hour flight to this squat like building occupied by people who were stoned out of their heads after smoking god knows what! While we waited for them to find a room for us (we had already booked, but apparently that means nothing to them) we were left in the dismal bar area downstairs surrounded by cats that looked ferrel and disease ridden, who proceeded to rip holes in our bags! We were then told that the room we should have been staying in had had the door kicked off the hinges by a previous guest but that they had managed to sort us another room. This room had door that didn't lock, a hole in the wall big enough for a person to fit through and a bed propped up by a brick. There was graffiti on the walls that was vile enough to cause nightmares and people sleeping outside on the corridors! The bathroom had no door handle (unless you count the shampoo bottle that was pushed through the hole where it had been), no shower curtain and hadn't been cleaned any time in the last decade! We had originally booked to stay for 3 nights but left after the first! We wouldn't recommend this place to our worst enemy! The staff were so out of it they probably didn't even realise we had left!

The only positive about this place was that we survived the night! Not recommended to anyone who has any ounce of self worth! Vile!

Room tip: Don't stay here!!

Me and my girlfriend stayed in the Overstay for one night in August and both loved it. The rooms are great for the prices you pay and the cheapest accommodation we found in Bangkok. Once you walk in the staff are instantly friendly and helpful, they ask you what music you would like on which is a first for anywhere we have been! We spent the night with them and we all got talking like we've been friends for years. Also all the artwork covering the six floors of the building is stunning and very impressive! We are coming back to Bangkok again and we will definitely stay here again, and we would reccomend this to any of our friends.

Checked into this place expecting it to be decent for one nights sleep... barely had any... nobody rele sleeps.. everybody is smoking .. music is loud as anything.. beds are thin layer of sponge killer on the back.. I'd avoid at all costs .. Not in a great location a lot of traffic to get to koh San n other locations. Great place to stay is Green House recommended!

When I stayed here, not only did they have a bed bug issue but the place was filthy. The so called "kitchen" is home to the litter box for their ten cats and should not be cooked in. The single rooms had poorly functioning locks (if the door even closed properly at all) and people were always complaining of having their belongings stolen. Most of the building is dark all of the time because they have all of the windows boarded up. On top of that, the owner Philip is a nut job! Rude and unapologetic of the state of ruins his establishment is in. It really is a waste when it could be so much better.
