“Good Value”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2010

The room we had was very small with just a bed and TV but it was comfortable, good air con which was needed in bangkok and the shared bathrooms were spotless. It was set back from the main road which meant it was very quiet and you had a good nights sleep. Very good value hostel which was located 15 mins from koh san road.

I stayed at Sam Sen Sam Place for three nights together with my husband and 19 yr old son. After arriving in Bangkok tired we made our way to our guest house and were really pleased to be met at reception by Bobby with a huge smile and a genuine interest in making us as comfortable as possible. My husband and i stayed in a double room with air con and our son stayed in a twin with fan, both rooms were spotlessly clean, and well furnished. Although the rooms weren`t huge, they had everything we wanted, our double room also had a tv, fridge, and spacious bathroom, there was a bathroom just along the corridor from our sons room. The decor in Sam Sen Sam is fab, it is full of character everywhere you look you will see another little piece of thai art, there are little terraces where you can relax and you never feel as though its busy there as everything is set out so well. The internet access is really quick and reliable and it was great value, we had a snack there one day after returning from a trip to the nearby marker and it was tasty and excellent value for money. The staff were so helpful, they never trying to sell any trips etc, as a few other places in Thailand did during our 3 wk stay, but at Sam Sen Sam they were always there to provide you with their local knowledge, Bobby even took us to the marker on our 2nd day, he wouldn`t even let us pay for the taxi saying he was going there anyway!! he also got us some very good prices for a few things we bought before he left us to explore. The ladies behind the reception desk were so helpful, nothing seemed like too much trouble for them. There was a young girl working there who even took her time to sort out our thai sim card for us and made sure it was working ok, and the owner was never far form sight and ensured that everything was provided to make our stay comfortable, he was a real gentleman.
All in all we feel we couldn`t have stayed in a better guest house for our few nights in Bangkok, the location was perfect, just far away from the hustle and bustle to have good nights sleep but within walking distance of Khao San road, the river boat to go see the Grand Palace and many other attractions, Sam Sen Sam is a little calm haven within Bangkok, spotlessly clean, welcoming and with staff that treat everyone of their customers warmly, if your just passing through for one night or you stay longer they provide excellent quality service at a fair affordable price.

I stayed 7 nights in this hotel. It has plenty of good aspects (great location, near Khao San Rd but in a calm area; clean rooms, good breakfast) but the guys there are only there for business and to make money! Despite the fact we stayed 7 nights we were treated like any 1 night guest. They want you to pay your rooms the soonest and not only after the night, and they make you pay everything. Don't expect a free service or the fact that the hotel helps you in a non lucrative way.
The standard rooms are pretty small (almost no place to put the bags on the ground), so i think it is pretty expensive.

This is a haven of tranquility away from Khao San Rd, which is only 10 minutes distant...unless you're completely unfit or totally lazy. Americans, with a habit of driving to collect their mail will doubtless disagree.
The Hotel name derives from being located just off mainroad 3003 and is a mere 150m from the riverside and views of the bridge that span the Chao Praya river.
The traditional teak building is exceptionally well maintained and has a number of beautifully presented rooms suitable for most travellers. Yes, there is the odd mosquito or two but that's to be expected. Buy a mosquito spray from 7 eleven on the street corner and apply at dusk & early morning and you won't be bothered again.
Everything is relative and the tariff here is higher than other hotels in the area. That said..go take a look at what they offer and you'll be happy you're at Sam Sen Sam. In Europe I'd have to pay 4X as much.
I arranged to meet my Thai lady friend here and she really appreciated I'd chosen this hotel. The quiet understatement of this place makes you immediately forget the hustle and bustle of Bangkok just at the end of the street. This is a hotel for all tastes and the staff and owners know how to provide a quailty service.
In my estimation, being 10 minutes walk from Khao San Rd is a major plus. I recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to stay a few days and be confident they won't wish they'd booked elsewhere.

My husband and I stayed at their Super Deluxe Room for 4 nights. Room is not as big as we thought. I guess it depends on which room you get. We stayed at their "Peach" room, which is close to a noisy road and is smaller than other deluxe rooms. Wood floor is nice though. There're some mosquitos in the room, but I guess that's common in Thailand. Breakfast is simple, and only served between 7:30~10AM. So, if you book tour that leaves early in the morning, you won't get chance to eat it. The manager won't refund you the breakfast money unless you request it(100bhat/day). Location is not that close to Khao Shen Rd., about 15 min. walking. So, we found that after wondering around Kao Shen Rd. for couple hours, it's quite a long way to walk back. We couldn't find the ferry stop people recommended, so ended up spending some extra $ for TuTu and Taxi, since Taxi driver couldn't find the place. Make sure you have the hotel map with you and know how to pronounce "Sam Sen Sam" in Thai if you plan to take Taxi. Most of the Taxi drivers don't speak English in Bangkok.

While not the cheapest option, this guesthouse may be the best. Exceedingly clean and staffed with the nicest, most helpful people around. Walking distance to river boats and the Khao San area. Nearby restaurants, shops, taxi and bus access. Good Internet access, though not free (not expensive either). Comfortable beds. I didn't make use, but I saw some guests using the laundry machine on premises. Bangkok bookended my travels and the proprietors allowed me to leave some baggage while in between my stays.

I'd absolutely stay here again, on the strength of staff friendliness/helpfulness, being close/far enough from the main drags to be convenient but not noisy, and the cleanliness.

If there's any downside, it may be that the walls are a bit thin. Not a big deal, however, unless you want to sleep in. But you're travelling - get up and get out there.

I stayed in three different private bathroom rooms. All were very clean. No complaints. An ideal "flashpacker" option.
