I didn't agonise too much about booking an executive room for four nights over Chinese New Year. The rate difference was not that great and it included both breakfast and the mini-bar as well as things like wifi throughout the hotel.
So I checked in at midnight and got a room on 20th floor with a view of Bangkok. Facing the wrong way to be an interesting view of anything but the motorway but a view nonetheless.
Room is surprisingly small but fitted with quality furnishings and has everything you want including international plug sockets, espresso machine, iPhone dock and the all-important minibar. It was warm. I mean, actually warm and not even slightly cool.
I asked reception if this could be fixed and when I returned it was getting slightly below room temperature but it never actually felt cold.
It was also not refreshed every day. The water was replaced but not the beer and I wasn't sure if the bottles of branded spirits were included or not (can the manager confirm this?). I had to ask twice one day for some more beer when it wasn't replaced and neither was the chocolate. That's one way of ensuring guests don't get their full value from the included minibar.
No matter. Breakfast in the cafe was fine with an egg station that livened things up. Two days I chose room service breakfast which arrived on time to the minute and was a lot better than battling the crowds downstairs.
Have to mention the speedy lifts. There are two lifts but even from the 20th floor I never had to wait long. I noticed this for some reason.
Location is great. It is about 15 minutes walk to the fun end of Silom and about ten minutes to the main pier for boat buses to the main attractions or Riverside at night. So great location. Staff all were friendly.
So I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
