“GONE DOWNHILL”
Reviewed June 20, 2009

Having stayed on and off for past 12 years in what was the NEWROTEL - I believe Chinese owned. The original pricing formula worked well. The new owners ? a Danish syndicate combined with a name change to NR GH and apparently targeting the Scandianavian backpacker market have lost the . plot. They seem hell -bent on extorting every last baht from potential guests on the pretext of offering " good value" . I note that the Trip advisor rating for this establishment is approx 55 out of a possible 60 odd guest houses. I think that is a fair appraisal. I recently made an internet reservation some months in advance and requested a choice of certain rooms in the main building. At check-in I was informed that those rooms were completely closed for renovation or painting and that my room would be in the adjacent building - that was once backpacker / dorm type acommodation - but for the same price of 700 baht. Under protest, I was offered a what was once , a normal ( cost 650 baht in 2008) - in the main building - but now ( with a coat of paint) the room was a " superior rooom " at a cost of 1400 baht per night - for what are essentially - very small rooms . The current managers / owners need to be reminded that maintainence ( painting) and updating is a normal part of the hotel industry and does not give them carte blanch to increase their room rates - particularly in the current economic climate. I declined and stayed in the 700 baht room only to complain to reception one hour later that the air con did not work. Having supposedly, sent a chang ( technician) to attend to it in my absence, when sleeping that night, I awoke in a sweat - the air-con not working. The bathroom was not the usual cleanliness ( by Thai standards) and it was evident that management were aware of a potentially lethal problem in the bathroom but had not taken any action to render it safe. The ceramic wash basin sitting on top of a pedestal was broken and about to fall to the floor - with the possible result of amputating your foot or leg. Normally hotels offer you a bottle of water for free but not here. I would not ever stay in this hotel again and cannot recommend it . I know there is much better value elsewhere in BKK
