“Chil-axn for a night on New Road in Bangkok”
Reviewed May 10, 2014

On New Road also known as Charoen Krung, at the bottom of Surawong, near Silom, the river and an easy walk to Sathorn and Saphan Taksin BTS (Skytrain) station. In a dsitict known for it's gems, jewlery and silver. Tucked away in an alley between sois 34 & 36 is New Road Guesthouse, which provides more than adeqaute accomodation for travellers, mainly "would be" backpackers who'd rather spend their money on booze than anything elses. The staff were helpful, friendly and cheerful. The buffet breakfast for 160B ($5) was good. I would have had to stay longer to be able to say more, but I was only their for one night.

Room Tip: I think I found the best price on Hostelbookers. The elevator starts on the 1st (not Ground) floor a...

Plus sides: helpful and polite staff, good food, nice nightlife at the bar with pool table. Not too expensive
Downsides:single rooms look like jail cells (go for the dorms at least they have ac) and a little far from most tourist attractions.

Over all would recommend :))

The New Road Guest House is a clean hostel, with all necessary accommodations for a comfortable stay. I made a reservation for a bunk-bed, which they gave to someone else before my late arrival, but then they offered me a private room for the same price after a little haggling. This deal is fair, and shows that they do care about their customers having a positive experience.

Bed was agreeable, with no painful springs or weird stains. Room had towel and minifridge and private bath. Probably the best hostel I stayed at on whole trip in terms of what the room provided for the price, but then again, I got a good deal. Desk staff are helpful. Did my laundry at low cost, and I know they can arrange for trip outside of Bangkok if you need.

Location is perfect! Far away from Kao San and close to Chinatown. If you like to get away from the tourist masses, do yourself a favor and stay in Riverside. Equidistant from both Lumphini Park and Bangkok's more historic tourist destinations (Wat Phra Keaw).

If your room faces the alley make sure to close the window, or else the mosquitoes will eat you alive. Big ones too!

I stayed in the dorms here and it was pretty good. Actually, I had a 10 bed dorm room to myself somehow so it was pretty incredible until a bunch of loud backpackers came in at 9am to unload their bags and plan their trip. But still, the setup was pretty goood. No real complaints. I pry wouldn't stay here again but I would recommend it to anyone looking for a decent place to lay their head for a few nights in the busiest city on the planet.

Kind and helping staff
Good buffet breakfast

Bad points: Very noisy inside and no staff is keep the nights calm
Looks more as a youthhoslel than as a guesthouse.

Dear travellers,

Firstly, thanks for staying with us at New Road and for taking your time to review our property. We really appreciate the constructive feedback with both pros and cons.

We are particularly happy that you liked the location in one of the older areas of Bangkok – A conscious choice from our side and convenient for public transport and local life.
Specifically for our guesthouse, we see our staff as our most important asset, which is why we are truly happy that you found everyone kind and helpful. Good breakfast and cleanliness is yet another acknowledgement to our staff and all has been shared with them.

As for your other comments, it is important for us to clarify that our name – New Road Guest House – reflects what we want to be and are: a guesthouse. Not a youth hostel. As such we strive for that homey feel where all travellers feel welcome and travellers (of all ages) meet and exchange travel tales in the laidback common area.
This said, we also want everyone to get a good night’s sleep – and be ready to explore the city the day after. We strive to keep the noise down, and especially after midnight request travellers to go inside. We are sorry if we did not succeed in this during your stay and it has been passed as a reminder to all staff to be alert on this.

In all, thank you again for your feedback. We hope you enjoyed your stay in Bangkok and Thailand.

On behalf of all staff at NRGH

This hotel is quiet but it is not visable from main street esp in midnight . It does not impress me since we arrived in midnight and even taxi driver have no idea where it is . Rooms is ok but not good value. And if you have big luggage then it might be difficut bcs of stairs.

We stayed at New Road in December 2013 for over three weeks (we were waiting for our motorbike to arrive in Bangkok port and it was constantly delayed), and started to think of the place as home. Fan rooms are great value, and were all very clean. The communal area downstairs is a great place to socialise, and we met many other travellers whilst we were staying here. Free teas and coffees were another very appreciated bonus!

Location is brilliant - near lots of good street food and a perfectly manageable walk to the BTS. If, like us, you cannot be bothered with the noise and sleaze of the backpacker area then this really is a great place to stay and is very good value.

The staff were incredibly helpful and went out of their way to help us. We would definitely make this our go to place if we need to return to Bangkok. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Room 402 was our favourite of the fan rooms - small but great value!
