“One of the good budget hotels in the Pratunam area at Bangkok”
Reviewed November 20, 2012

Pratunam is a famous shopping area including malls which are all at a walking distance of about 15 to 30 minutes. The hotel was neat with clean rooms albeit smaller than the one at Pattaya though. Since we usually did not spend much time inside the hotel; I guess we were ok with it. This one though was without a swimming pool. The breakfast at the hotel was good here too with variety of choices. This hotel provided a Tuk Tuk ride (local rickshaw) to a point near the market. Call the hotel; and they will pick us back at the same point as well.

The best part of shopping here is; more you buy less you pay. Famous shopping areas and malls are
1. Indra Market (below Indra Regent Hotel) – Small shops with deals on clothes, accessories, watches, electronic gadgets like cellphones & tabs etc.
2. Platinum Fashion Mall – Budget clothing market.
3. Pantip Plaza (everything and anything related to computers like hardware n software & electronics like cell phones etc.)
4. Local road stalls and night Bazar – Even cheaper deals for clothes and accessories.

Room Tip: Doesn't matter what rooms you are in. The windows are locked shut and cannot be opened. Since ou...

The deluxe room is spacious and clean. But it is well hidden so need to so some "homework" before going to the hotel if not will be easily get lost. If don't want to take tuk tuk service provided by the hotel, it needs around 8 mins to reach the main road by walk. However we will staying in a more convenient hotel next time.

Really nice hotel. We only stayed for one night before going back to the airport for onward connection to North East Thailand, but we were impressed by the kindness and helpful staff. The room wasn't really big enough to have an extra bed put in for my 15 year old, but fine for the one night. They helped us book a quick city tour of Bangkok. It:s off the beaten track down a rather smelly back street and hard for taxi drivers to find, but the free tuk tuk to the main road was useful. On the whole a restful and pleasant hotel for a short stay.

Best Western Mayfair Suites was recommended by a friend who'd stayed there previously. After reading reviews, I was slightly worried about its seemingly inconvenient location, but decided to risk it anyway, since the prices were good, and the package had everything we needed.

We booked the BWM Invitation Package, which came with return airport transfers, breakfast, 1-hour massage, set dinner and 4pm check-out, all for 2 persons. With the many extras, it proved to be reasonably good value. The room was clean, spacious (ours was a deluxe, which is larger) and well-tended to by the housekeeper each morning. The in-room wi-fi was weak but usable, and there's a PC at the lobby that's free to use. The TV had good English channels like Discovery Channel and CNN (we spent quite a lot of time following the US presidential debate). Bathroom amenities included shower cap, cotton buds, soap, shower gel and shampoo (no toothbrushes). The beds were firm, with 2 pillows per person. The hot water shower was strong enough, and generally everything was very clean and comfortable.

The only downside was that our room faced the Phaya Thai railway line. Each morning, the trains would begin thundering in and occasionally tooting their very loud horns just past 5am. It was okay for us because we are early risers, but I can imagine that most holidaymakers wouldn't be pleased to be awoken so early in the morning. It's a good wake-up call though, if you want to hit the nearby Pratunam market which opens early and is all but over at 9am. We could also hear the trains going past at other times, but didn't mind, as we were out most of the day, and were too tired at night to care! We didn't find the trains too loud (except for their horns), but they could be a problem for very light sleepers. The walls were also quite thin, and we could hear other guests opening their rooms doors at 2am!

The tuk-tuk service proved to be extremely reliable. We took it every day, and even when it was out sending another guest, it would be back at the hotel within 5 minutes. Going back, we would call the hotel to send the tuk-tuk to where we were, and the tuk-tuk would arrive within 5 minutes each time.

Having said that, the hotel isn't really conveniently located, although to be fair, the tuk-tuk service made it very bearable. They send guests to either soi 11, soi 13 or soi 15. And they will pick you up from the front of these sois when you call them. We usually asked to be sent to soi 11 each morning, which is a 7-10 minute walk to Ratchathewi BTS station, and then picked up at night (half-dead from a whole day out shopping) at soi 15, which is just opposite Pantip Plaza and Platinum Mall.

We are young, so walking wasn't much of an issue for us. From soi 15, we took about 15 minutes to get to Central World, then made our way on foot to the Siam area (another 15-20 minutes or so). But if you need to be smack in the middle of the action near the Central World/Siam areas, Best Western probably isn't for you. We liked it though, because it was down a quiet (but not unsafe) lane, and the tuk-tuk service brought everything a lot closer to us.

The set meal in our package was surprisingly delicious with a portion that was big enough for four! We had green curry with chicken, stir-fried seabass and stir-fried chicken with cashew nuts, and they were all yummy! The 1-hour massage in the package wasn't great - maybe I just wasn't used to the Thai style massage - but the therapists were friendly and did their best.

Just a few notes of caution:
1) I emailed Best Western a few times to confirm my reservation, and especially the airport pick-up as we'd be arriving late at night, but didn't receive a reply. Thankfully, the taxi driver was waiting at the airport (at Gate 3, as stated on the website), but I did worry before that, wondering if we'd have to take a cab to the hotel.

2) I asked at check-in if our 4pm late check-out was confirmed, as we had a late flight leaving Bangkok. The front desk staff said yes, it was included in the package. A day before check-out, I checked with another staff, who confirmed without looking up my booking that our late check-out was definitely okay. On the morning of our check-out, I asked another staff who looked up our booking and said, "Sorry, we can only give you until 2pm, because we are fully booked today." She finally agreed to accommodate us till 4pm when I told her about our late flight. But do be sure to check and double-check, because all the staff might tell you different things!

3) Our hotel-airport transfer was included in the package and the hotel called us a cab. About 10 minutes into the ride, the cab driver jumped out, hailed down another cab driver whom he claimed was his "friend" and bundled us and our luggage inside because he had to "go home". I told them both that the cab fare was to be paid by the hotel and they both nodded "yes" at me, obviously having no clue what I'd just said. Our first cab driver sped away, the second one drove us to the airport, then demanded 400THB when we got out, saying that he'd been told to send us to the airport, that we'd pay the cab fare, and that no, the first cab driver wasn't his friend at all. What a mess! I called Best Western - they spoke to the rather upset cab driver over the phone and sorted it out, then kept apologising profusely for the terrible experience. It wasn't a nice end to our holiday, and we know it wasn't Best Western's fault, but we'd definitely be more careful in future (we are gullible tourists sometimes, although I hate to admit it).

Despite its slightly way out location, I'd recommend Best Western to anybody who doesn't mind a bit of exploring and walking. But if I visited Bangkok with older members of the family, I'd probably plump for Amari Watergate or Arnoma which are more conveniently located.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper, ask for a room that doesn't face Phaya Thai railway. Rooms at the...

Very central located hotel. At walking distance of the major shopping malls. Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice little restaurant, which is perfect if you do not want to leave your room. Very nice rooms. it's a pitty that the windows are locked and therefore cannot be opened. The price was very reasonable, so I could spend more money on shopping :-)

Value for money with the good customer service. Plus point: free wifi, free tuk tuk service.
The only setback is the location. It is situated along a corner of pratunam. Very quiet lane to the hotel after 9pm. There is a spa just next to the hotel. Quite affordable and service is good.
