Charlie House Pinklao
Ranked #212 of 889 Hotels in Bangkok
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 27, 2011

I first stayed at Charlie House soon after it opened in 2005 and have been back numerous times by myself, with friends and with family.
Finding Charlie House can be a little difficult. Located a little bit out of the of town, off the main road down a tiny alley way that can not fit any cars. If you stop at the petrol station the staff will come in their little golf buggy to pick you up.
Once you have arrived you are greeted by friendly staff in a beautiful green oasis with water feature.
The rooms are comfortable and spacious with beautiful big clean beds. At the end of a long day of site seeing, it was a pleasure to come back at the end of the day, have a dip in the pool and laze in the garden.
I highly recommend Charlie House to any one going to Bangkok and I look forward to my next visit.

Nothing fancy but the rooms were just perfect for us. We booked a family room which was very spacious, comfortable and clean, what more do you need! Cozy little garden with a little pool, enjoyed a simple breakfast outside. Jam, toast, fried egg, enough to start the day with but for those who like a big buffet...then this is not your thing! Central PIn Klao is on 5 minutes so shops and restaurants and a cinema are within reach. You do have to go through a little soi (very Thai area but fun!) but they provide a free shuttle service with a golf cart. We really enjoyed this simple but nice accommodation!

I booked a single room at the special offer of 900 Baht / 30 USD per night, and they agreed to an airport pickup, even though I didn't book over 72 hours ago. The room was large, open and spacious, and very clean, and a real pleasure to come back to at the end of the day. The whole hotel is in a little space of its own which is so quiet and relaxing. Although the pool and pond / sitting area aren't large, it feels like an oasis in the city.

I liked the atmosphere of the place, and it seems authentically Thai. I had dinner at the restaurant once which was fine but more expensive than the street stalls just outside. Take a hotel card, because taxi drivers will find it difficult to find, being at the end of an alley. They have internet in the reception but there's a nice internet cafe a short walk away (turn left outside the alley!)

Outside of the alley are the street stalls where you can eat great authentic and cheap food - you will never be stuck for finding something to eat here, it was one of the highlights of my trip. Plus a short walk away there's a market, shopping centre and supermarket. Taxis often wait along the road so I never had a problem taking a taxi. In fact, the location is the good and negative point of the hotel - it's in a local neighbourhood so not many foreigners. You can enjoy the local atmosphere and quiet oasis of the hotel. But if you rely on taxis you may spend a while in traffic jams, so if I went again I'd take the ferry to get anywhere rather than taxi to the BTS. But a taxi is fine for the places of interest nearby.

For this reason, I'd recommend the hotel especially to couples and families who would enjoy the relaxing environment. As a single traveller it was still great, and a short (10 minutes / 65 Baht) taxi ride to Yanhee International hospital which was my main destination, but after a few nights I moved to a hotel nearer public transport (ferry and BTS). I give it 4.5 - very good!

We booked this hotel included in a package from Alex Holiday (affiliated with this hotel).

The alley leading to this hidden beautiful homey hotel is not so bad. The alleyway is basically some foodstalls, local condos and residences. We were taken in a golf cart along this alley, to and from the hotel. The ESSO along the main road has a phone where you will just need to dial 0 to have you picked up there and the golf cart will arrive.

The hotel itself is everything nice. We booked a deluxe room + 1 bed (room 105). The hotel may look small but our room and bathroom are surprisingly big and wide enough to move around. The bathroom is very clean too. A/C works ok (its remote buttons are funny though: click "Too Cool" to raise the temp, and "Too Warm" to lower the temp). Hot shower is working but not too precise, still ok. Fridge has a lot of drinks with free bottled water everyday. There's cable TV too. Our room is cleaned everyday, with new towels and replenished drinks. We arrived after a half-day tour and were pleased to find our room very neat. We always looked forward to return to our hotel room after our tiring tours.

Breakfast is good, simple but can make you really full. It feels very peaceful to eat beside a pond and to hear birds chirping. No noisy automobiles to be heard.

All the staff were very approachable and cheerful, always smiling and respectful. We've also met Teacher Charlie (the owner) and Mommy Charlie (her mother, 92 yrs old), very nice people. They would welcome us when we check in, and Mommy Charlie would wave at us whenever we leave the hotel.

Location is great too. Golf cart to ESSO and then walking distance to Central Pinklao and the Cineplex, and just one overpass away to Tesco Lotus.

We have enjoyed our tour via Alex Holiday, and it really feels very relaxing and comfortable to stay at Charlie House Pinklao. Definitely, we'll be staying here again!

Had 3 nights booked, checked out after one.

Arrived to our Family Suite, found carpets heavily stained, towels stained and the aircon barely working.

For 50 quid a night you can do better.

The location at the end of the alley looks OK, until the morning I was accosted by a drunk local with angry man syndrome, there are reasons there are tourists areas, you wouldn't stay at a hotel in Peckham would you????

The hotel is not particulary safe for young kids, too many steps and an open pond.

The pool is tiny, some creative photography on the website, taken what looks like 10 years ago.

We ended up at the Holiday Inn Silom with a room for 60 quid.

We recently stayed at Charlie House for 4 nights on the recommendation of a friend. Given the prices, a Junior Suite for 4 nights cost us £176, we weren't expecting a 5 star hotel, however, we were VERY impressed by the overall quality of this hotel. The Junior Suite consisted of a large bedroom, spacious sitting and dining area (which had Thai style recliners as well as conventional table and 4 chairs), and a well equipped bathroom. The whole apartment was clean and well presented, it was serviced every day and left spotless each time.
So far so good, but the hotel was enhanced by extremely friendly and helpful staff, plus the owner (Charlie funnily enough!) and his family who can only be described as brilliant. While chatting to him one day he asked if we were interested in seeing a Thai Cultural Show (Siam Niramit, highly recommended), if so he could get us a large discount as he was currently making up a party. Not only that, he ferried us to and from the theatre in his private car at no charge. Charlie was exceptional but the rest of the staff were equally friendly, ever smiling and ready to help. Most spoke very good English and all were charming.
We only ate breakfast at the hotel, which was perfectly acceptable if a little pricey compared to eating out. As for food in the local area, well if you can't find something you like, given the incredible range on offer, what are you doing in Thailand? Food is everywhere, incredibly varied and very, very cheap. Even eating upmarket in the large Shopping Centre was only costing £15 for a 2 course meal for 2 including beers. This is probably because you will almost certainly be the only non-Thai on view, this is not a major destination area for 'falangs'.
The only recommendations I would make are, firstly, suspend judgement on the place until you get into the hotel (the back alley leading there is a little raw round the edges), and, secondly, take a map, preferably written in Thai, with the hotel location marked, as the Taxi drivers will NOT know where it is. If all else fails then 'Central Plaza Pin Klao' usually works, providing you can get the pronunciation of 'PinKlao' correct (you won't so hence take a map in Thai!)
In summary, a true hidden gem, certainly if we return to Bangkok there will be no hesitation about staying at Charlie House once again.

Stayed for 6 nights at Charlie House in a suite at 2,200 Bahts per night. The room was clean and comfortable with a good shower and large bath. The room was serviced each day to a good standard. The small eating area was pleasant and quiet. The staff were excellent, happy and smiling they did all that they could to please. Food was to a good standard - all in all I would say that Charlie House was a little oasis in this frantic city.
Location - just a short walk (about 50 metres) or courtesy (golf) cart trip away is the main road. This road is a mass of small eating places on and off the road side. Across the road is a Tesco Lotus shopping Mall next to and even larger shopping mall both surrounded by typical Bangkok eateries and market stalls. A 40 minute walk (5 minute tuk tuk or bus) will take you to the River Ferry station and from there the whole of Bangkok is at your mercy.
Charlie House - excellent
The Staff - even better
