“A good place to stay in on a budget”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

Based on the TripAdvisor community reviews, I stayed with family in this hotel. The reviews were spot-on: the hotel was value for money for the room that we booked (a family room that could accommodate 5 persons). Book it on their hotel website - there's a 30% discount!

I have to say, the room was kept spotless and the housekeeping and kitchen staff have impressed me with their enthusiasm and hard work. We didn't have much of a view from my window (it looks into the back of a dingy looking apartment block), but otherwise the beds are comfy. If you are a westerner, you might not like the breakfast - primarily Asian (Taiwanese congee and salted side dishes to go with the congee) but there is an attempt to provide variety - on weekends there's spag bolognaise (which I find it an odd choice for breakfast) and daily scrambled eggs, ham and toast. No matter - there's plenty of options nearby for breakfast even if you get bored of the offerings. While I like our room and the generally efficient service, I really wished there's some way that they can keep the breakfast items piping hot - the air conditioning has left the congee and soya bean milk tepid - it's a big no-no for such foods. This is a regular complaint that Tripadvisor users have mentioned with regards to this hotel, and I am surprised management has not tumbled on to the fact that this needs to be improved.

Location wise - it's a working class neighbourhood but generally safe after dark. Do explore the YanSan Night market (only food, no shopping) which is a short walk from the hotel (you can use the underground MRT tunnel or use the traffic lights to get to it). It's streetside eating and go to the ones where you get a queue of people or where you see cars and motorbikes stopping by to place their takeaway orders - it generally means the food is ok and tasty. It's a great place to see and explore the little laneways of how ordinary Taiwanese get about their daily lives, do their grocery shopping, go to school and work. Nothing touristy about this area. If you want shopping and tourist sights and action - it's best to stay in the touristy places near Taipei City Hall, ximending, or the xinyi areas. This however, is a good place for my family - we want to see the real Taipei, and you will definitely find it here in the Datong area where the hotel is situated. I timed my walk to the MRT Daqiaotou station - it's about 7 min or 10 if you want a leisurely stroll. Special kudos to the kitchen ladies - they were happy to heat up my mid afternoon snack which I bought in the market in their kitchen microwave. Overall, a pleasant fuss-free stay.

Room Tip: Pick a room with a window - even though there's not much to see outside, it's good to have n...

This is a top of the line hotel for a very reasonable price. From the minute you enter the glass doorway from the street, you can tell how modern and clean this establishment is. The staff is extremely attentive at the front desk and gave us maps and brochures of the surrounding areas and subways.

The rooms are cozy (think San Francisco, if you've ever been): large comfy bed, wide screen tv, pick up laundry service at a very nominal fee. One of the nicest things about this hotel is that the bathroom is fully stocked with personal effects: razors, toothbrushes and paste, Q-tips (!!), floss, combs, shampoos and conditioners. If you use any of them (or take them with you) they are completely replaced when you come back to your cleaned room. They also give you two bottles of water in the room each day, gratis.

There is a free breakfast buffet every morning, offering both American (scrambled eggs, hard-boiled, Canadian bacon, french toast, salad (yes, salad!) and Chinese (congee, tofu, book chop, dried pork). Coffee is served all day and is located downstairs, where there is a reading room (magazines and newspapers in English & Chinese). The staff there is very accomodating and friendly, keeping all the food trays filled.

The hotel is located within a five minute walk to the subway station, a system that is as easy to understand (not to mention clean) as any system I have ever ridden. The neighborhood is older, but completely safe. I walked the streets at night with my wife with no trepidation. There are two night markets nearby, one north of the hotel and one south, which serve "shou cher" or "small eats. " a great way to sample delicious finger foods served by street vendors. You can't visit Taiwan without visiting a night market. Side note: the best night market in the city is in the neighborhood call Shaolin, a regular stop on the subway system. Disembark at the Shaolin station and follow the signs (written in English). You won't be sorry!

Again, this hotel is first rate and will be my Taiwanese home away from home when we go back next year!

Stayed at Dong Wu few years back on my solo travel trips to Taiwan. Took some effort to locate the hotel as the building blends in with its neighboring buildings but it stands out once you manage to find it. Staff are exceptionally friendly and goes all out of their way if you require any assistance at all. Rooms are really comfy especially the bed, soft yet firm at the same time.. no problem falling asleep on the bed at all. Room is spacious with nice lighting, toilet has decent toiletries as well. Now at Min Quan Xi Road station is open, it is so much easier to locate the hotel. Just a mere 5 mins and you can reach it. Really value for money and very very nice staffs who really make all guests feel like home.

Stayed here one night after staying for several days at the Tango Nanshi ( more expensive). No windows in room. Clean and the ethernet cable worked on my Mac so I didn't have to go to the dining room to get wi fi. Staff's English was sufficient. What I didn't like at all was that it was a bit far to the subway and even then I had to make a transfer to get on the main line to the main train/bus station. I don't know Taipei well, and the neighborhood seemed a bit sketchy. I would not stay here again if I could find an equally good hotel with better subway access.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a window/view.

good and cheap place to stay during weekdays, and with online booking discount via their website. Rooms was ok but paying extra for window rooms aren't worth it. No good views unless u stay at the top. staff wasn't sure where to get a prepaid card, it was the only question I've asked. overall is a good hotel.

The reason we chose Dongwu was its unbeatable price, NTD3360 for 4 including breakfast and free wifi. It had everything we expected, clean room, comfy bed, fully supplied toiletries, strong wifi signal, hot breakfast. Some complained about the cold breakfast. We think this is because of the strong aircon and they didn't have a heating device to keep the food warm. Otherwise we found the breakfast with sufficient variety and quality. There is miso soup, rice, congee, sausage, egg, bacon, chicken nugget, veggie, bread, coffee, tea. Sufficient for the price we paid for.

We also loved the Family Mart just downstairs round the corner, and the MRT just 7-8 mins walk away.

It rained on one of the days and hotel staff immediately rolled out a whole cart of umbrellas for hotel guests. We asked to borrow and thought we needed to leave our names or room numbers. But they just let us take the umbrellas without bothering any registrations.

Things to improve:
1. Hotel staff could help us to open hotel main door when they saw us struggling with our suitcases, especially there are a few a steps just outside the door.
2. Don't know why they always turn the aircon so strong. Whenever we returned to the room, we found the thermostat always set at 16 C. We increased to 25 C and found it back to 16 C the next day. Hotel needs to be more conscious of too low temperature they set.

We stayed in this hotel for 8 nights and were overall very happy with our stay.
We had booked a Business Double room through the hotel’s website for 2240 TWD, breakfast was included.
The room was spacious and very clean with a fridge, flat screen TV, safe and everything necessary for preparing a cup of tea/coffee. Every day they provided 2 small complimentary bottles of water. Free W-LAN-access was provided also in the room which was very handy.
We used the laundry service which was only 180 TWD for a whole bag of laundry and was finished the same day.
The breakfast was a buffet with Asian breakfast (changing slightly each day) but also with coffee, toast and jam. In the breakfast room, there were also 2 MAC-PCs with internet that could be used free of charge. It was also possible to make some print outs.
The staff was very friendly and always keen to help or give advice.
Right next to the hotel is a Family Mart, a small super market that is open until very late. The closest MRT-station is Daqiaotou which is only about 10 min. walking distance away.
We would definitively stay in this hotel again on our next trip to Taipei.

Room Tip: To have a window, choose the Business double or check the hotel's website. Not all rooms have a...
