Based on the TripAdvisor community reviews, I stayed with family in this hotel. The reviews were spot-on: the hotel was value for money for the room that we booked (a family room that could accommodate 5 persons). Book it on their hotel website - there's a 30% discount!
I have to say, the room was kept spotless and the housekeeping and kitchen staff have impressed me with their enthusiasm and hard work. We didn't have much of a view from my window (it looks into the back of a dingy looking apartment block), but otherwise the beds are comfy. If you are a westerner, you might not like the breakfast - primarily Asian (Taiwanese congee and salted side dishes to go with the congee) but there is an attempt to provide variety - on weekends there's spag bolognaise (which I find it an odd choice for breakfast) and daily scrambled eggs, ham and toast. No matter - there's plenty of options nearby for breakfast even if you get bored of the offerings. While I like our room and the generally efficient service, I really wished there's some way that they can keep the breakfast items piping hot - the air conditioning has left the congee and soya bean milk tepid - it's a big no-no for such foods. This is a regular complaint that Tripadvisor users have mentioned with regards to this hotel, and I am surprised management has not tumbled on to the fact that this needs to be improved.
Location wise - it's a working class neighbourhood but generally safe after dark. Do explore the YanSan Night market (only food, no shopping) which is a short walk from the hotel (you can use the underground MRT tunnel or use the traffic lights to get to it). It's streetside eating and go to the ones where you get a queue of people or where you see cars and motorbikes stopping by to place their takeaway orders - it generally means the food is ok and tasty. It's a great place to see and explore the little laneways of how ordinary Taiwanese get about their daily lives, do their grocery shopping, go to school and work. Nothing touristy about this area. If you want shopping and tourist sights and action - it's best to stay in the touristy places near Taipei City Hall, ximending, or the xinyi areas. This however, is a good place for my family - we want to see the real Taipei, and you will definitely find it here in the Datong area where the hotel is situated. I timed my walk to the MRT Daqiaotou station - it's about 7 min or 10 if you want a leisurely stroll. Special kudos to the kitchen ladies - they were happy to heat up my mid afternoon snack which I bought in the market in their kitchen microwave. Overall, a pleasant fuss-free stay.
