The hotel was great but only one problem was it's location. It is not in the center of Taipei nor near the tourist destinations. However it is near the Taipei main station and the bus terminal. You would need to take a cab to the train and bus stations but if you don't mind walking it took 20 mins to the train station for me. The staffs are very friendly and helpful. They knew very well about the town. I saw many Japanese staying at this hotel and as well as locals from other parts of Taiwan. There is a DVD player in each room so you might want to rent a DVD on your way back to the hotel.

New and clean simply/nicely designed small hotel. Location is ok, accessible to anywhere in Taipei if 10 minutes walk from the metro station does not bother you. The hotel is very close to the famous old town with wholesale shops/outdoor dining street. You can find lots of convenience stores as well as the wine shop nearby.

The single room (double-bed) I stayed was probably less than 30 sqr. metres, but the bathroom facilities were like 5 star hotel, with big powder space and separate bathtub/shower booth. They also provided my room with L'occitane amenity!

The hotel style is more like for business travellers with minimum service, but I will definitely stay there again in Taipei for leisure trip.

The good: High quality bathroom, L'occitane amenity, bathrobe, DVD player. Efficient room cleaning. They might have free internet access (I don't really remember).
Neautral: 10 minutes walk from the station.
The bad: The walls are very thin, you can hear your neibours' noise. No in-room dining.

Stayed four nights at City Suites and found it very pleasant.

ROOM: The standard double is quite large with a couch and desk area. There is a flat screen TV, fridge, and room safe. There was a plate of fresh fruit in the room and robes in the closet. The bathroom has a separate tub and shower, and all the usual toiletries, including q-tips and cotton balls. The only negative thing about the room were the stains on the carpeting.

The standard single room that our friend stayed in was quite a bit smaller, but still felt comfortable.

HOTEL: The restaurant is only open for breakfast and there is no room service. The decent buffet breakfast, included in the price of the room, is a combination of Asian and Western items. There's good, free coffee and tea throughout the day in the lobby/restaurant area.

The staff is helpful and very friendly. Free laptops available for use in the lobby and wireless throughout the hotel.

LOCATION: I don't agree with the previous reviewers that the area around the hotel is that seedy, just an older part of town with fewer options for tourists. There are a few small restaurants across the street and a couple of convenience stores nearby; otherwise, you have to take a taxi, or walk 10-15 minutes, for a meal. It's very easy to catch taxis on the street.

We attempted to book the hotel through Asiatravel.com, but couldn't get a confirmation, so we called the hotel directly and received approximatedly the same rate for the double and a better price for the single. The Seasons Hotel is across the street.

Good Value:
Brand new. Large rooms. You'll pay twice as much for the same size in a branded hotel. And paying the same price will get you into a poorly refurbished 'boutique' hotel on the east side of town.

Location:
City Suites is located in one of the oldest parts of town. There's not much in the immediate vicenity for tourists, but if you walk 10 minutes due east you'll come to the Chungshan MRT stop. Around this area are two large shopping malls and numerous small boutique shops. The area is worth exploring if just for the Bin Sherman boutique and the Astoboy store. MRT will get you about anywhere in town cheaply and easily. Taipei Museum of Contempory Art (MOCA) is just 5 minutes south of the MRT station.

The good: Nice, spacious rooms; upscale and trendy for less than the price of 5-stay hotels; nice big bathrooms with amenities; very spacious lobby; free Internet

The bad: Hotel lost my reservation (but still found a room for me after a couple of calls and complaints and offered me an upgrade); one must walk up a flight of stairs for the lobby--often no one is at the front door; no nice view whatsoever; carpeting in the room seemed a little scuffy in places; hotel is located in absolutely the most horrid neighborhood ever, but it is so seedy it does sort of have a kind of camp value. About a 15 minute walk to the subway, but cheap taxis can be hailed right outside.
