Very spacious rooms, soundproofed rooms and well kept. The lobby was minimal. Was in TPE for a 13hr overnight layover and even with an airport bus/taxi plus the hotel room charge, it's far cheaper than the hotels in the airport vicinity.

At check-in (around 2100h), all I wanted was dinner and a clean shower. Walked to TPE101 hoping there's some options for dinner; however, everything closed early. The cabbie told me there were tons of food options in the alleyways behind hotel. They were right.

OBTW, after I saw the Chinese characters on the hotel, I should have known to pronounce it "hoong du fahn dian" (king city rice store) instead of "hondo ke dian". Local cabbies do not know the western name of the hotel. Bring the physical address of the hotel if you're unsure how to pronounce Mandarin correctly.

  • Liked — Proximity to late nite take out facilities
  • Disliked — Complimentary snug-fitting condoms

The Hondo is a very good hotel unfortunately not in a very good location unless you need to be across the road from the enormous new stadium. Getting to the Hondo will cost you about $50 (US; Canadian; Australian) in a taxi from the airport or $3 pp on a comfortable coach style air conditioned bus. If you get the bus from the Evergreen bus company it stops at a crossroads downtown and then it is about a 15 minute walk to the Hondo. The local buses are air-conditioned, cheap at only 15c flat and frequent. The subway/skytrain is efficient priced according to distance/sections travelled to but still cheap 20c to 50c and fast but the subway station is down by the crossroads which means a long walk after a busy day. Everything of interest is a long, long walk.
The staff are efficient.
There is a printer with the free computer to print out your next hotel or air fare confirmations.
The folks in Taiwan are very friendly and helpful. You cannot stand longer than two minutes before an English speaking Samaritan steps forward to assist you with directions or instructions on how to use the fare machines in the subway.

  • Liked — Bathroom bath tub and amenities of high quality. Air conditioning needed in this humid city.
  • Disliked — You have to take transport to get to places of interest.

I have stayed in many of Taipei's hotels, but have never come across one that approaches Hondo for value of money. On my previous trip to Taipei I paid almost 4 times as much for a hotel that did not approach Hondo in quality.

The rooms are huge and very well appointed. Bathrooms are massive, with a separate shower and bath. Toiletries are of high quality, minibar and snacks are both free and the fruit bowl (refilled daily) is a nice touch.

Staff are well trained, friendly and speak a high level of English.

The location is good, and is easily accessible to the downtown area of Taipei.

Really, nothing bad to say. Hondo is quite simply outrageously good value for money.

I stayed several times in this hotel.. I was working between Korea and Thailand and enjoyed spending few days in Taiwan when i had to travel between the two countries.. The hotel was recommanded to me by a friend in Taiwan and it couldn't have been better.. The location is perfect, the rooms are clean, incredibly large with everything you need (they even offer you coke, fruits and coffee) and the price is incredibly reasonable..
I now live in Taipei and i keep recommanding this hotel for anybody visiting me... A gem in the city...

The Hondo Hotel was excellent for its price. Its bst room was the Twin double A business suite. It had everything a travler would ever need for his or her trip. The only exception was that there was no microwave in the room or else it would have been perfect. The choices of a free western or chinese style breakfast everyday was very good along with an outstanding service attitude. If I went back to Taipei, I would definately go back to the Hondo.

  • Liked — Room Service along with the friendly atmosphere
  • Disliked — no microwave in room
